Sony's "booth" was quite unlike Nintendo's carefully planned
Wii area, and more like an expo unto itself. With PSP, PS2 and of course PS3 displays all competing for the square miles of floor space, the place was a zoo, but also held an impressive managerie of kiosks harboring playable titles. The PS3 games themselves were powered by late-release dev kits that were clearly displayed behind glass, and the titles sure looked pretty at those high resolutions, even if they were a bit PS2-ish in their controls and gameplay. Warhawk was of course the exception, and there were plenty of people waiting to get a shot at the action. We captured most of the chaos to share with you, so click on for the shots.
We found Waldo, can you?
There is no man behind the curtain.
That controller looks familiar.
Sony's "these are just a bunch of people playing a PSP on the Subway" was quite entertaining, though we missed the smell of our one back home.
We're not going to lie, PS3 graphics are teh sexy.
This is to disorient you before you enter the booth so that you're confused and end up waiting in line to play lame PS2 games. It worked on us for a good 15 minutes at least.
No, they weren't on.
Ryan gets some play time with Heavenly Sword.
I know a system's aesthetic features shouldn't matter and this topic was all talked about back when the PS3 was first unveiled with nothing else showing, but I must agree with #46 that the PS3 (I'm guessing this is the final and already shown design) looks definately the most hideous of the next-gen consoles. #47 spoke my words about the George Foreman grill. Indeed the design team had too many barbecues laughing their asses off about how the PS3 will take over the world. At least that shitty boomerang is gone...oh wait, instead we get the dualshock....again! The dualshock controller is far from perfect. Sony once again knowing that their systems will still sell like hotcakes don't give a shit about innovation and design. Oh and btw, that fuckin' Spiderman font for the logo is pissing me off. Come up with a decent new design that doesn't reak of Spiderman everytime I enter the living room. Oh and silver? Um..just no. w/e...I'll stick it behind the TV away from sight and enjoy FFXIII (damn you sony and square enix for your schemin' effin' marriage).
btw, Nintendo's booth kicks Sony's ass. At least they know how to organize and plan themselves properly for an event as significant as E3.
#19: The DS is touching wider masses than any console before, and it is exactly Nintendo's target recently. The "gamer" marked is just a fraction of the population.
Yes the GCs sales where lukewarm, but the DS is flying off the shelves.
Lets get one thing straight for first gen titles Heavenly sword looks better then any of Microsofts second gen titles. And Resistance looks as good as gears of war and Halo 3. And I would rather play FFXIII then any of Microsofts games that they have mentioned. I know 600 dollars is a lot of money, but it is a Blue Ray drive which means you get 2 extrodinary devices in 1. I have high def and I want to keep using it. Microsofts equipment is not High Def it is just upscaling to increase resolution like crapy DVD players out there now it is not true high def like HD DVD and Blue Ray. The Wii will be fun but the PS3 will be a revolution.

yes DS sales are very good in japan but touching a wider mass than any console before LOL. a non-gamer is way more likely to know what a ps2 is than a DS. dont get to ahead of your selves.
OK to all the X-Box 360 fan boys out there get a life. Trash talking shows how little your minds are.
This is a gaming industry with many players. Everyone likes what they like but the way you Mircosoft X-Fanboys flame anything not X-Box is sickening. You've invested your money in your new X-Box 360 good for you now let the rest of us buy what the hell we want with out having to listen to you X-Box d*ck sucking freaks. Sony has been around and will be around The same for the new Wii. I'm very excited to see what's in the future. As any true gamer out there you will have all the systems because you love the games. I've been a gamer since my Dad brought Pong long ago and since then I've enjoyed all the system there after but you Fan Boys for the X-Box & 360 are making me want to boycott anything X at this point. Stop pushing your Shi**y views on us true gamers.
PS3 rock, it wayyyyyyyy better than the 360. no wonder it didn't sold well in Japan.
well sony have tripped up bigtime...the titles on show there dont look any better than the 360, they had to back peddle on the controller which looks cheap and nasty (look forward not back guys) and the system looks big.
the 450ish price tag is gonna do them no favours at all....the 360 is already a superior game system at half the price now....with out a price cut...the 2x blu ray drive is not that much faster than a standard dvd rom...thats fine they are going to help the hd dvd camp without trying, plus the ds is still giving it to them in japan and the death of umd movies...keep going sony, you lied about the ps2 and now the ps3 is carrying on that legacy....roll on the wii and 360!
The whole fanboy name calling thing cracks me up. The way all you talk you'd think you worked for your perspective purchased system. The hypocrisy is so deep in here we're all gonna need a shovel to cut a path through the bullshit, i'm-better-and smarter-than-you talk. Oh and trying in any way to comment in-depth on the graphics of PS3 from PHOTOS is a friggin joke, and yes it was also a joke when people were doing it to the 360. Just want everyone here to make sure i'm not fanboying in anyway.
So, pull out your extra IQ points and pithy comments and flame away at my post. Wouldn't want to end all the intelligence in here and suprise anyone.
It amazes me how many people bash Sony for it's broken promises (every manufacturer makes and breaks promises before a systems release, don't be blind to that. If you were banking on everything that Sony said being true you haven't been gaming for very long).
I've personally YET to be impressed with the XBOX 360, and yes I do have one. I'm confused as to what, aside from technical specs (remember, it was the first of the next gen, it had better have some new tech specs) Microsoft has done that can be considered innovative? Live? Sure, for a console, though EA had that idea years ago (remember the charging rumors?)? Halo? That wasn't original in any way (right down to the costumes), it might have been a good console shooter, but not innovative in the FPS genre in general.
I'm actually more worried about Microsoft than I am Sony. They're coming up with a ton of upgrades and additives, and to me that feels like a PC, which isn't why I'm buying a console at all. I don't want to have to pay to keep adding stuff personally.
Engadget would be so much kewler if they disabled comments on posts about game systems...
# 25 i didnt say sony started anything if you read everything you might see the word wii . #23if you say better graphics for sequels to older games just doesn't cut it then why is metal gear and grand theft auto series is popular i bet you that 99% of the gamers out there never played the first grand theft auto on the orignal playstation or the orignal metal gear on the msx/nes only reason they play it now is because of the graphics when they launched on the playstation . the reason behind the blue ray is that it can hold up more space then HD DVD so that when game programers make game they can add lots more infomation and graphics on a single disk and it be a watse to not have the laser play movies unlike xbox not able to play HD dvd format disk which prevents them not to make better games. so you can take your swirly piece of shit and shove it down your throat
The original post said that all of the PS3 games were running off of late release dev kits. Were the snaps of the server racks those "late release dev kits"?
If so, good luck packing everything inside of those rack mounts into a slim and cool case. I'm sure the big fans on the dev kit (assuming those are the dev kits) help keep the cell chip cool. If Sony packs it all into a case similar to the infamous proto case, they will certainly face heat issues equal to or greater than the 360.
okay this is a bit late but it made me mad enough to post again

"not 1 of the primary components is pc style the graphics processor is leaps ahead of nvidias latest and ati's and this has been said by critics and reviewers alike. and the processor while not as esentric as a 8 SPE (really wish they would stop saying 8 CPU's on g4) confusion it still is a custom 3 core processor unlike any designed to date. So get u're head out of u're butt..."
Wtf?!?! who the hell told you that the xbox graphics proc is superior to a pc's??? Ask any gamer, PC wins graphics HANDS DOWN. and um yes...the xbox is esstially a pc, why else would it be able to run linux? I will agree that the gpu inside the xbox is very unique and powerful indeed, but it's nothing compared to a high end video card in a gaming rig, i mean come on, a freaking video card costs more than the xbox 360. Not to mention if you enable SLi or Crossfire you're going to be in pixel heaven. If you can find a source that says an xbox 360 has a better gpu than the video cards of today, show it. Because for all i've read, it's not even worth arguing to a pc-gamer
i got a 360 on launch and love it and was thinking about getting a ps3 or wii but the ps3 is looking less tempting to me by the day. I have a HD setup so i would have to get the HDMI equipped version and also i hear that this is only version to have wifi built in.
I can't see many casual buyers getting a PS3 like they did PS2 as most people i know who are casual gamers do not have broadband or a pc and are not bothered about blu ray or hddvd or online gaming. I think the price will be too high for these people for a couple of years.
Also i know Sony are aiming for an older market but the fact is alot of kids have a ps2 and will want a ps3 regardless of the other consoles.
I wonder how many parents will spend 410 for xmas gift for there kids, not that many people i know would.
SORRY, I HAVE A STUCK CAPS LOCK AT WORK. THE GAMES DECIDE EVERYTHING. HARDWARE FOR THE MOST IS A MOOT POINT ESPECIALLY WHEN THE SPECS ARE SO CLOSE. NINTENDO IS IN A CLASS OF THEIR OWN DUE TO THEIR FOCUS OF GAMEPLAY AND NOT GRAPHICS. 360 AND PS3 ARE FIGHTING THE SAME BATTLE. YOU WON'T KNOW A CLEAR WINNER OF THE TWO UNTIL PS3 IS RELEASED AND YOU BEGIN TO PLAY THE GAMES THAT SHARE THE SAME PLATFORM. THEN ONLY THEN WILL YOU BE ABLE TO MAKE VALID CONCLUSIONS ON WHO IS BETTER. WAIT A YEAR THEN ARGUE.
People keep talking about the laclk of vibration in the PS3 controller... Am I the only one that always turns off the rumble?
Nice Pictures guys....
Can you please tell me what kind of camara was used to take those pictures? I might buy it lol

What about a seemless wireless controller.
Turning the console off/on with same controller.
Streaming audio/video from a PC.
Xbox Live, Achievements, Gamer Points.
Downloading High Definition Video's.
How can you possibly say its not innovative, I will probably buy a PS3 as well, but the XBox 360 is one of the best purchases I have ever made.
All the UK gamers are kidding themselves if they believe that the PS3 will be 330 pounds or whatever. It will be considerably more expensive in the UK than in the states, just as the PS2 and any console ever released is.
#63, it is commonly acknowledged that the Xbox360 graphics component is as powerful as a 7800GT for a PC. You do you self a disservice by stating that the Xbox must be a PC because it can run Linux, as Linux is generally platform independent and your washing machine etc.. could probably use it. Simple economics state that 4,000,000 units of production for the Xbox360 graphics card against possibly 60,000 High-End Graphics cards (made in probably 10 different factories), its called economies of scale.
As a designer, long time gamer, and Sony lover since childhood I must confess that Sony has left me wanting more out of the PS3 design.
The console looks very, well, like a clone of some not to well developed "Made in China" quickie, it lacks the finess, style, elegance, and solid design base that Sony has been known for within the electronics market, which is what they do, so they should have gotten it right.
I will buy the PS3 when it comes out, and will probably make a cover for the console, but I am PRAYING that they hire on a world class product designer like Karim Rashid, Dyson, or some other kick ass product/industrial designer who knows about lines, colors, and ergonimics. Along with some graphic designers who knowidentity, branding, typography and graphics.
Our DOGMA within the design world is "form follows function", unfortunately the form here seems disfunctional.
BRING BACK THE RUMBLE CONTROLER!!!
Did they get rid of this for PS3?...
why not just chop off our nerve endings
geeeeeesh.
nice pictures, thanks guys
