Fujitsu Siemens releases Q2010 Lifebook
We knew it was coming, and we knew exactly what they were going to stuff into that $5,000 "world's most desirable laptop" version, but it looks like Fujitsu has some scraps for the poorer desirers of the Q2010 among us. In fact, we're not even seeing the limited edition version listed at all on their product page, but there are three "low-priced" versions available if you're willing to sacrifice 3.5G wireless and a bit of street cred. Ranging from from $2,000 to $3,200, the laptops all feature 1.2GHz Core Solo ULV processors, 802.11a/b/g wireless, and the 3-cell 1.75-hour battery. For $3,200 you get an extra 7-hour battery, 1GB total of RAM, an 80GB HDD and Bluetooth 1.2, while the $2,400 mid-tier version gets you a supplemental 3.75 hour battery, Bluetooth 1.2, and a 40GB HDD. With a 30GB HDD, 512MB of RAM and no Bluetooth, the $2,000 version looks positively barebones. An incredibly sexy, slim, lightweight and desirable barebones.

I wonder how this compares to the dell d420 that was announced earlier today

"3-cell 1.75-hour battery" Is that accurate? It seems like 1.75 hours as advertised would mean that you'd be lucky to get one and a quarter out of it. Unimpressive!

I actually think that the MacBook is the most desirable laptop, but mainly based on looks.

The battery life is not that long at all and would have been better if it had a core duo processor but then again that would knock the battery life down further.

I was truly counting down the days for the launch of this machine. I really was eager to place my order.
Then, when going through the specifications, the $1999 base model can only take 512MB of RAM max... Ouch, that hurt.
The higher end model that supports 1GB is $3299 (not including tax), which is simply prohibitve for me.
I'm in such big dilemma now whether I shoud follow my desire of getting this exquisite toy (the base model), or if it would be a mistake due the RAM limitation.
What do you guys think?
PS: for me.. buying a laptop above 2.3 pounds beats the purpose of paying a high premium for the form/weight factor which I'll gladly pay for, so don't suggest other models above this weight mark (Panasonic's R5 is a good contender, then again, it can only be purchase through an importer and has a lesser processor speed--- don't know what to do).

the merom based laptops are due before school starts. you will see a nice jump in laptop performance. along with some new motherboards. I really was waiting for this laptop also... turned out to be a big disappointment. Narrowed it down to this , ibm X60s, or the Sony Tx. really like the sony since it is tiny with a cdrom drive. In the meantime just waiting for the new thinkpads or sony laptops...

I'm in the same dilema myself... I ride a train daily and want something I can use with my cellphone viea pdanet. I was considering the Sony UX-50 but I decided I wanted a traditional notebook form factor... I too was drooling over some of the panasonic subnotebooks based on battery life over at dynamism.org. Alas I am leery of buying through an importer like that. I am now deciding between one of the Vaios, the new Dell subnotebook announced today, this machine. Despite all this, the macbook is still a contender based on its attractive price/performance ration even though its hardly classified as a subnotebook.
Any advice on other models to consider is appreciated. Thanks in advance
