Evesham releases SLI-enabled Quest Nemesis notebook
If Evesham's 19-inch Quest A630 gaming rig was just a little too much laptop for you, now the company has introduced another dual-core model that maintains the A630's SLI goodness but drops two inches off the screen -- and a full $1,300 off the pricetag. The new 17-inch Quest Nemesis features a Turion 64 processor from AMD, dual nVidia GeForce Go 7900 video cards, 1,680 x 1,050 WSXGA resolution, 160GB worth of 5400RPM SATA drives, and 1GB of rather pokey 333MHz DDR RAM, along with a DVD burner, 3-in-1 card reader, and Bluetooth and 802.11g radios. There's also a full suite of connectivity options, including FireWire, DVI, VGA, S-Video, S/PDIF, and 4 USB 2.0 ports, as well as an ExpressCard slot for eventually adding a wireless 3G modem. You can order the 8.8-pound Nemesis right away starting at $2,775, or wait around for the inevitable flood of identical rebadges that will probably drive the price down a bit.

i have 1 of these laptops, they are ok.. kinda unstable at times, awesome for games play tho, shame it not a duel core tho, how much would it be worth if i was to try to flog it?
Battery Life? 20 minutes.
does that also include the price of some sort of heat resistant fabric for those of us who will actually use a laptop while it is in our lap?
Me being the Apple fanboy that I am, I wonder why Apple can't make a lappy with this kind of components, yet shrink the weight down to something less than a desktop replacement. Another sad thing about Apple is that its 17" MacBook Pro is actually MORE expensive than this at $2799, yet its components are worse. Sure, the Core Duo and RAM and 100 GB 7200 RPM HDD is good, but the x1600 graphics card is nothing compared to the dual SLi 7900's in this system. On a side note, this also has way more ports and card readers.
So sad... I am torn between great design/OS and great components/price.
That's the thing about Apple computers, they're alot like meals at a fancy french resturants. They look great and they taste great, but they're expensive and the portions are small. Certainly not hearty compared to a big breakfast that comes with everything you can get at a local dirty spoon for $3 bucks before 11.
just purchased a gateway mx7120 with a mobile athlon 64 100gb hard drive, 1 gig of ram, an ok ati 200m card, windows media center, and dl dvd rw and a 15.4 inch widescreen all for $950, so what makes this worth another $1700
bullfrog- the 17" screen, the much better battery life (expected 3 hours in regular use), the hugely, hugely, hugely more powerful graphics, bigger and faster hardrives, the fact it isn't a gateway, the processor both performance and battery life wise, the full size keyboard.
I could probably go on, couldn't I.
Sorry for the DP, just wanted to point out it's the same machine as the Alienware M9700 and Scan Anaconda, both of which are rebadged Arimas. The Evesham comes in at around £700 cheaper than the alien, too.
Joe Smith, I think you might have answered your own question. I am not sure the exact devices of this Evesham notebook, but it inherently has to be a lot bigger and thicker to deal with the SLI setup, not to mention the cooling needs of the 7900's. Even non-SLI laptops in this class require more room for that. You asked why Apple can't make something like the 17" MacBook Pro with those components, and the answer is that it wouldn't be technically feasible to fit them into a case with the dimensions of the 17" MBP. Frankly, there aren't any PC notebooks that would fit the criteria you are talking about either, so this isn't specifically unique to Apple.
And Michael, I really don't quite get the comparison you are making. The components in Apple's current laptops are not really significantly different anymore. A lot of other laptops have X1600's or Intel 950 integrated graphics, and most of them are using the same Core Duo chips, RAM, hard drives, etc. There is still a bit of a price premium, but I don't think it is quite like the comparison you are making.
bullfrog, the laptop you bought is not even vaguely comparable to this Evesham. Can you really not tell the difference between the ATI 200m integrated graphics and an SLI notebook with GeForce 7900 GPU's? Not to mention the RAID hard drives and larger screen?
