Sony BDP-S1 delayed again... until October 25
It's delayed, it's not delayed, it's delayed -- further. That's right, Sony's BDP-S1, the Blu-ray player subject to a delayed news reaction over its quiet shove into an August launch timeframe, was today discovered to once again be pushed back, this time until late October. We can't confirm whether this release demotion is also going to affect the Japanese launch of the player, but this old song is getting pretty sad. We know Sony wants to get the player right before they push it out the door (while also protecting their margins and ensuring supply, etc.), but at this point we're going to be less than surprised if the launch date "accidentally" slips past the PlayStation 3, which Sony may stick us with in order to better to parade their big Blu-ray push around the nascent console.

I'm sorry, I read your posts everyday, but could you take a grammar class on this post? Please?
Mike... get a life. I'm assuming that you are grammatically perfect in every sentence you write? I'm also to assume that you never make mikstakes in your job?
Has anyone else begun to wonder if Sony has a "fill in" the blank news release with the headline "(product name here...like PS3) Has been Delayed Until (fill in date here)" They just better not delay my 46" Bravia X-series LCD that's due in September in time for football season........
Yeah Mike, Its a Blog Entry not an English grammar book, by the way you are allowed to take a breath in the middle of a sentance regardless.
Sounds like Sony have realised they need to pump their player up a bit after the lacklustre reviews of the Samsung. The article also seems to think that the PS3 release is set in stone, which I'm doubting - Also I still believe that the PS3 blu-ray player is going to be stunted in some respect.
why are you guys even care for the delay its not like its the only holy BD player out there there is already one out and many to come before this one hits.
Format War? It was over before it started... Chaulk up another useless Sony format. The pile is getting long and distinguished (like my Johnson)... Betamax, Memory Stick, Mini Disk, Didn't they have a DAT or something?, And now.... LAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! BLUE RAY!
It's all over but the crying for Sony...
Well, to mike's credit, there was another confusingly worded entry the other day that was so bad, I couldn't even understand it. I know grammar doesn't have to be perfect, but if it is a major blog that gets 1,000,000 hits a day (like engadget), the posts should at least be understandable, and hopefully have decent grammar too...

Dee Dubya,
Actually Minidisk was a huge success in most european and asian countries. I beleive it was basically Australia (and i'm assuming the US) where it didn''t take off so much. So it was still a reasonable success throughout most of the world.
Oh, and DAT was THE standard for professional digital audio recording for many, many a year (Although i'm not sure if this was a Sony format or not, can anyone confirm?).
Memory stick was lame, way too big. Plus there's way too many memory card formats out there. In my opinion it would be best to just have SD cards as the standard (and with that goes mini-SD for phones of course).
Can't say i've ever used Betamax so i'll refrain from commenting on it either way.
I guess my point is don't bash Sony just for developing some new and innovative formats. We need companies to go out on a limb as Sony often does in order avoid getting stuck in a technological 'dark age'.
C'mon guys, this one is easy.
Sony is just wayting a little bit to release
Duke Nukem Forever Blue Ray Edition!
"mikstakes"
"sentance"
??
Come on, people. Mike should complain about the commenters too.
Sony has also gotten their PR folks in spin mode, stating that "mpeg2 allows us to produce a picture closer to the source than with codecs like H.264 and VC-1"
Current single layer BD yields are around 45% and 50gig dual layer BD's are nowhere in sight.
I have had the Samsung BD-P1000 for a week and am underwhelmed, especially when you consider that you can get a HD DVD player for $500 and the movies are uniformly excellent in terms of PQ. The initial crop of BD titles suffers due to the use of mpeg2 on 25gig discs.
I watched Underworld Evolution, which is the best looking title in the launch lineup. It looks great, but I have a number of HD DVD's that look better.
Thats my birthday! ...but i wont get it cause its gonna be way to expensive
I don't get it, you'd think Sony would have already had a player developed and ready for market before anyone else. Seeing as they're pushing the format so hard. What's the hold up?
"why are you guys even care for the delay its not like its the only holy BD player out there there is already one out and many to come before this one hits."
Maybe because it doesn't bode well when the main backer of the format can't get their own player out before anyone else.
There is a bigger perception of "value" in this country over all-in-one devices being "better". Sony loves to tell everyone who will listen that the decision to include DVD in the PS2 was a primary driving force in the explosion of the DVD market. I'm sure there are a few people who actually believe this tripe.
There are many indications that Sony is trying to start the same thing over again here. The difference is that Blu-Ray is a much newer format than DVD was at the PS2's launch. There were commercial DVD players that cost as mujch if not more than a PS2 these days that functioned nearly the same as PS2 DVD playback. A consumer in the store could look at something like that, especially so close to the holiday season and say "I've been holding off on trying DVD for awhile. Hey, this new game machine the kids want also plays them." When comparing the price to regular DVD players, it wasn't that much more for a PS2. This time around, Sony is gambling big by taking a much bigger loss on the hardware to actually UNDERCUT THEIR OWN PRICES for Blu-Ray standalone players, making the PS3 a more attractive buy for cost-conscious and cash-strapped consumers. A $1000 player or a $500-600 dollar one that does much more than just play movies--I know I and many others for whom that decision would be easy. Sony knows that the standalone players will be for the high-end digital entertainment enthusiast anyway, just like the first two or three years of the DVD format. More consumers will by the PS3, however, and this will, over time, drive Blu-ray drive manufacturing costs down, lowering the cost of standalone players, especially Sony's. Sony is counting big on the success of this plan, since their electronic division stands to gain just like their game division does.
If this thing is not released by November i'm killing the whole idea of purchasing the PS3 and a matching BRAVIA KDL-46XBR3. I understand a small delay is possible for any brand new products but doing it again and again and again it's just too much.
Sony was an evil corporation during their days., they when down for all the bad things they did to many customers with all thouse defective products just after their warranties expire. They almost hit to the point of bankrupcy in 2004.
Now they have secure the number 1 spot for LCD TVs with their BRAVIAs and will definetely win the upcoming holiday season with the PlayStation 3 they think they're all-mighty. Sony is just back to their old dirty tricks, Promise and more promises.
I just hope there's no one in here who have place one of these for pre-order. I cancel mine the same day i place the order. with Sony you just don't know., They are not reliable. FYI: Sony Style is NOT allowing any cancelations now that this thing is delayed again.
Going to have to agree with Mike and Taylor about the grammar. Slight errors are acceptable; but there has been an increasing number of ridiculous sentences.
Replies to grammar corrections like, "I'm assuming that you are grammatically perfect in every sentence you write?" are absurd. Most users are not prof. writers/bloggers, if you are writing for such a large audience there is a higher standard.
I find the grammar corrections of the comments annoying, but the articles really do need to be checked more often, the number of typos and frequncy of poorly worded sentances reflects poorly.
Sony might just be waiting for that Sigma Designs decoder chip to begin shipping before it releases their flagship Blu-Ray player. I think that would be a logical deduction considering the decoder chip used in both the Toshiba HD-DVD player and the Samsung Blu-Ray player is rather underperforming.
Single layer MPEG@ goodness at twice the price for teh win! Who needs more movie per disk? BluRay disks are huge, that's all that matters!
Dick Shconary,
I really don't think you are comparing apples to apples when you are comparing the grammar of a poster to a journalist.
Mike's only point is that an editor is supposed to catch that kind of stuff.
yeh the current blu-ray movies suck so bad being in mpeg2? come on guys wtf. use the vc-1 codec for high def
