Dell-AMD partnership is supposedly official
Ever since Dell began relaxing its anti-AMD policy by incorporating Opteron processors in its server line and selling Athlon chips through its online store -- not to mention that little Alienware purchase -- there have been rumors that consumer desktops and laptops would also be outfitted with non-Intel CPUs for the first time, and now The Inquirer is reporting that a final agreement has been reached that will bring these very products to life. At a meeting which apparently took place at Michael Dell's Texas residence, the two camps reportedly concluded their courtship and began planning a series of AMD-powered machines --to be advertised as "Windows Vista Premium Ready" -- that will be available in time for the Back-to-School sales events. nVidia is said to be the manufacturer of choice for the upcoming Athlon boxes, while ATI will continue supplying graphics solutions for Intel-powered configurations and some AMD notebooks. One theory behind the deal says that even though Intel is in the midst of introducing a new architecture, most of the first-run Merom (mobile Core 2 Duo) chips have already been committed to Apple and Lenovo, so Dell needed a way to ensure that consumers wouldn't be kept waiting endlessly for back-ordered products. We're not sure about any of that, but we do know that we like having as many choices as possible when it comes to PCs, so we're sure hoping that The Inq's source is on the money here.

Goood. I'm happy Apple will be getting the bulk of the Core 2 Duo chips. Mean I'll be able to get a Mac Pro pretty soon it seems. Woot.

I'm real happy for AMD. I've been a happy user of AMD cpus since the k6-2 and to break Dell's INTEL ONLY policy is a real landmark for the company.
WTF is intel garunteeing it's core duo chips to go to a low suppler like Crapple when they should go to their biggest customers, ie HP and Dell?

Apple taking Dell's supply of chips?? Maybe Apple is paying Intel double for each Core2 and cutting into Apple's margin for each laptop. Why not? They have what looks to be about a $1000 profit margin on each of those macbook pros.

Now that Dell is not intel only intel wants to suck up to a pc vendor that uses their chips only, ie crapple. They're trying to ride apples reputation for design quality, which I don't understand why it's there to begin with since every crapple product I've ever worked with has been a POS.

Talk about a day late and a dollar short.
AMD has owned Intel on the desktop for the last three years, now that Conroe is about to drop Dell makes this move...

Crapple? Are you serious? I guess no PC has ever given you any bit of trouble.

Hopefully this means Dell updates their laptop design, I'd like to see a new case for the Inspiron 9500. If they are going to go with a new CPU some redesign of their laptops styling would be welcomed by me. The only problem is they bought Alienware so they are not looking to steal that style/performance market now. They have the XPS range but that is not much different than the Inspiron range in styling.

Anyone else notice that Dell has started to offer "Apple Mac OS" drivers on their support website?

I have been hearing more and more rumors about a deal between Dell and AMD. This seems a little more concrete then anything else that I have heard as of yet. I'm looking it forward to and hope it happens. I'm a big fan of Dell but have been tossing around the idea to just build my own computer when I buy another one because I really would like an AMD processor. Everything I have read states that most of AMDs processors are faster and cheaper then Intels. If Dell goes with AMD and Intel, I'll continue to stick with Dell when buying a computer.
