The Vega Ultra Portable

Hard to believe that anyone would willingly stare at Windows XP on a tiny screen (the five-inch display on the OQO and the 4.5-inch display on the Sony UX are already pushing the bounds of XP's usability), but some info and images have turned up over at AVING about one with an even smaller display, the new Vega Ultra Portable. No slide-out QWERTY keyboard like either the OQO or the UX, but the Vega does sport what looks like a full numeric keypad on the front, as well as a 4.3-inch touch screen, an AMD Geode LX800 processor, 30GB hard drive, 256MB of RAM, and integrated WiFi. Should be out sometime next month, at least in South Korea.

Running XP at 500mhz doesnt hurt. It is deadly. Scroll down to the bottom of the Aving site and look at the OS. This is definetly not for the faint of heart.

I've run xp on slower machines (Installed xp Tablet on an OLD touchscreen toughbook that was like 300mhz & 128mb ram). It ran just fine, until you tried to do anything other than use notepad ;)

XP. On a small screen. With no keyboard in site. What are these guys doing, trying to torture us? What's their sales pitch going to be? Just try and use it -- we dare you? These people are going to lose their shirt and their pants on this one. Sheesh.

Guess what? I currently run Win XP on an IBM Thinkpad 600 laptop. That's right! A Pentium II 233mhz (MMX rember those?) computer with only 128MB Ram and 2MB of video memory. It's only bad if you try to open several applications. This is clearly a problem b/c 128MB of ram is not enough. This little device should fair much better than my old junk, which I use for surfing the internet just fine.

You will probably need to keep one of those on-screen keyboard apps open at all times to make this device remotedly useful...

Did any of you idiots even bother going to the page? From the pictures there's clearly a stylus being used on a virtual keyboard.

Hey, it s possible, i had an old compaq with an intel 500MHz cpu, some 4200rpm hd, of course i had to upgrade the ram though to 760MB, and the pc ran smoothly with xp pro - after some tweaking. I multitasked like crazy (dl, watching vids, burning, and unzipping all at the same time most of the time). That is until someone formatted it and i couldnt tweak it back... a miracle i tell ya to get it to run that smoothly.

Well, it's not a bad looking device and I might be willing to squint when I'm on the road and desperate to read some info of a web page, but it does beg the question: how do I enter text?!?
