Dell recalls 4.1 million batteries

Details are still thin about the specific models affected by this latest battery recall, but it would appear Dell is working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission in recalling what's been said to be "the largest safety recall in the history of the consumer electronics industry." We're talking 4.1 million units installed in Dell machines sold between April 2004 and July 18th, an absolutely mind boggling number compared to their last recall, which was in the thousands. The kicker here is the batteries were actually contracted out to Sony for manufacture, meaning of course that anyone else using Sony-built batteries, like, say Sony (and Apple, should we be looking your way?) may also have their units taken back. While we are a little wary of one Dell exec's statement that they're "getting ahead of the issue," which in our opinion would have actually been issuing this recall four months ago, we're glad they're finally taking care of business before someone actually gets hurt.

Update: Dell's press release states the recall covers the following machines, so be aware! Dell Latitude D410, D500, D505, D510, D520, D600, D610, D620, D800, D810; Inspiron 6000, 8500, 8600, 9100, 9200, 9300, 500m, 510m, 600m, 6400, E1505, 700m, 710m, 9400, E1705; and Dell Precision M20, M60, M70 and M90 mobile workstations; and XPS, XPS Gen2, XPS M170 and XPS M1710. Also, you're to go here, and to pop that batt post haste.

Do not expose thethinkpad r30 series battery to high heat or freezing temperatures. Do not leave your battery in your car in the summer. Hot batteries discharge very quickly, and cold ones can't create as much power. Fully charge new battery packs before use. New pack needs to be fully charged and discharged (cycled) a few times before it can condition to full capacity.

When you use the battery for HP Pavilion ZV5000, fever is a normal phenomenon, because in the process Pavilion ZV5000 battery charged and discharged, energy conversion will result in the heat and at the same time the heat will be transmitted drums.

Short battery life of laptop is mainly cause by heat rather than charge / discharge patterns. Thus, it is wise to remove the Vgp SONY-bps9 battery of a laptop when running on fixed power. It is necessary to have a spare lithium-ion battery Sony VGP-bps9, use one up and keep the other cool by placing it in the refrigerator. Do not freeze the battery. For best results, store the battery at 40% state of charge.

I am in dispute with Dell over their lap-top charger.

When the charger has not been used for some time (so that it's internal capacitors are discharged), plugging in the charger trips the RCD in my house, switching off all the power.

The RCD (residual current device) trips if there is an earth leakage current of more than 30 ma. These are commonly used in the UK to protect the user from electrocution. Once the charger has charged a little, the trip switch is not tripped off.

This is nothing to do with the laptop and occurs with the charger alone. I have had 3 replacement chargers, all exactly the same.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Hi Peter,

Mine has just started to do this which suggests some component has changed within the charger. The laptop is six months old. Just like yours, it doesn't do it every time.

It seems that not all Dell batteries are made the same. I had some bad experieces with some aftermarket batteries. Stick with Original batteries as the cells are made in Japan instead of China. http://www.brandbatteries.com

It doesnt matter where you buy your batteries from, as lon as it isn't from DELL. They don't know how to treat their customers nor their employees. They have a tremendously high turnover rate and they LIE. LIE. LIE LIE to everyone. Don't let me get started with their ink. That;s a whole different ballgame. They try to get you with Free return shipping. Better yet, go to the local mall and get your cartrage filled for a fraction of Dells cost.

I have a dell inspiron 6000 which has been nothing but a headache and Dell won't replace the battery which is on the recall list I really regret buying from this company. Now they tell me they will sell me a new battery which has been recalled but the kicker is they gave me the run around since the day it first was released about the recall with stories like it was on back order and they have no record I ever called they pulled that on at least 6 times yet I kept my cool and let them play. Now my warranty is out and they say that is why. But I know it has nothing to do with the warranty. Why would I extend my warranty with a company like this.

I too have problems with my dell inspiron 6000 battery. After about 1 year 1 month, the battery just doesnt charge well and keeps flashing orange and green. Unfortunately, the warranty of 1 year for the battery has expired so there's no way I can get a replacement. Talk about quality and long lasting. :(
