Onkyo MP-1000J portable multimedia player
If you're a proud portable media player owner, or you've got some fancy schmancy streaming media setup in your living room, the Onkyo MP-1000J might not do a whole lot for you, but if you're searching for a simple way to get content from PC to TV, you may want to listen up. The MP-1000J is a sweet new middleman, designed to store your fav shows, clips, etc. on its 2.5-inch hard drive (which you're responsible for providing), and then play them back (presumably hassle-free) on your living room set, in-car LCD, or dusty hotel television. The trick here is the self-contained GUI that shows up on your monitor, allowing you to select the file you want to see; it's akin to having a (very) "light" version of Windows Media Center Edition running the show within the relatively small device. With native support for DivX, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, AVI, VOB, XviD, MP3, WMA, OGG, and a few more, this thing will play back just about any file you toss at it. The unit gets a plethora of extras, including a USB cable, AC adapter, 12v car adapter, a trio of display connectors (including support for 1080i over component and Dolby / DTS passthrough), and a svelte remote control to manage the action from afar. While we can't adumbrate just how much this little hard drive / screenless PMP hybrid will cost, the MP-1000J will add yet another alternative to getting PC content to the TV (sans any confusion) when it drops on September 1st.

product sounds kind of useless specially when you have wireless video streaming from PC to TV and then for on-the-go you just can use your IPOd or other PMP device's TV-out
this feels like an ipod without the screen
This thing looks great. Wonder what the price is. I already have a portable dvd player that will take the inputs and would like to save movies to hard disk to play back.
This is actually already available under another name.
Vantec has a device called the AVOX (I've had it for almost a year).
The menus are the same, the outputs are the same, heck even the remote is the exact same.
It looks like this is a licensed version of the Vantec AVOX. You can currently buy the AVOX at newegg for about $100 last time I checked.
It's got a USB port... wonder if it'll hook up to other extrenal HDDs and allow tv access to files on them as well... that would be great, since for now I've got my huge tower in the living room to allow content access for my extrnal drives...
Reminds me of the Vantec AVOX http://www.cluboverclocker.com/reviews/multimedia/Vantec_AVOX/Index.htm
That has the same remote as my Mediagate MG-35 USB Divx enclosure.
I wonder if it plays .ISO dvd disc images
I've got the Avox with a 100GB drive in it. For those of you who don't see the product's use... when I'm stuck in a hotel in the middle of nowhere and I have the choice of watching DiVX files on my laptop's 15" screen or the hotel's 25" TV, guess which one I'm going to choose?
Zach Marshall: You don't see the benefit of this thing carrying around DVD-resolution video as opposed to the disgusting low resolutions and even lower color fidelity of things like the iPod (whose video support is an absolute joke) or the PSP (on which any of YOUR videos have to be nasty 320x240 resolution)?
For portability, this thing is pretty sweet. I don't travel much so I don't have much use for it, and my Xbox streams everything I could ever want to watchfrom my fileserver (might have to migrate to an HTPC soon for that to support 720p+ content). But for anyone that travels, this would be infinitely better than an iPod or PSP.
I just have to say, that when ever I see or hear "Onkyo", my brain immediately responds:
"My stereo comes from Japan"
(Anyone else remember that one?)
This this was cool when it was called the Ximeta MediaShare Mini...
I have the LaCie version of this. I find it very useful for holidays. Coupled with my Pocket Loox, it also operates as a great method for downloading photos off the memory cards of our cameras.
It has helped us get through many a rainy day stuck in the middle of nowhere.
H, this is more closely related to the Mediagate MG-25 than the MG-35. Both use the same remote.

By the way, the MG-25 can be purchased from Mwave for $71 (without hard drive).
i like the dodgy 'WAVIO' logo!!!
Sure, it's a nice size, but it's a heck of a lot harder to find a big cheap 2.5" drive than a 3.5" (I don't see anything bigger than 120GB available for any price), so I'll stick with my Modix 3520 (with a cheap 400GB in it) for now.
does any one know where i can find one
