PSP GPS shots a go go
We're not sure how many more pictures of Sony's GPS unit for the PSP we all need to see before we believe a) it's real and b) it's coming out in the near future, but hey, here it is and live n' sprightly as can be. We still wish their right hand would talk to their left and synergize on that other GPS unit they recently launched, but hey, it's Sony, they rule their roost as they please. Still, why does something tell us we'll be hearing about a rash of snapped off GPS antennae?

I want one as long as it doesn't cost two arms and a leg.
I wouldent want one on a PSP, as it would just feel wrong, ill get one for my PDA or Samsung Q1.
So i can atleast mount it on my card dash/window and not look..........weird...... lol
stylish, will require upgrade sadly.. :*( hopefully that new explooit gets somewhere. and i liek how it flips down, i kept saying it looked stupid and unpractical sticking up like that.
Totally agree with Richard. I want one, but, I won't pay too much for one. It's one of those things that would be cool to have, but, cool has a spending limit. Knowing Sony though, it will cost $350. "It turns the PSP into a SUPER COMPUTER! You are not buying a GPS add-on, you are buying the ability to.... find yourself!"
Anyone without a PSP is bound to search fervently for a reason to diss this thing. It's sad but true. If this thing costs less than $200 and has relatively good GPS software, it's a steal for anyone smart enough to have gotten a PSP.
With MS Streets with GPS selling for less than 100 CDN would it be wrong for me to expect that kind of price point?
Smart enough to have gotten a PSP? The main draw of a PSP is that you can play illegally downloaded games from consoles that were out ten years ago.
Oh boy I can pay $40 for a sloppy PS2 port!
Ben, this is sony, not apple! It really shouldn't cost too much for the gps add on hardware. The software however I figure may be quite expensive, just look at tom tom, all the cost of that is pretty much in the software. I think you'll still be better off getting one for a touch screen device like a PDA, trying to operate it while you're driving otherwise could be a lot more tricky and therefore a lot more dangerous!
Jason, by no means am I a Sony fanboy, but the PSP is a lot more multi-dimensional than summing it up as the "main draw... is that you can play illegally downloaded games from consoles that were out ten years ago." From personal experience I can tell you that there are quite a few people out there who use the PSP as more of an all-purpose tool, and to that effect, the GPS add-on will make it even more of a Swiss Army knife than before. As someone who travels a lot I can say that a Tivo and a PSP make great bedmates. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing what this little GPS dongle can do.
Yeah Jason, it depends.
I love my PSP (although I do know at least 10 people that have one, so I get the benefit of multiplayer). I have socom, monsterhunter, GTA, and SF alpha 3. I still play NES and SNES games, and it makes an awesome PMP device (films and tv shows etc). You can even use Tversity on the latest firmware to stream content from your PS over broadband > WiFi > PSP.
For me it's my favorite gadget, even over my SPV M600, and while it's not everones cup of tea, it's clearly very powerful and versatile.
I was thinking about getting a DS, but now I'm gonna at least wait until I've completed MonsterHunter and Socom. I'm not a "fanboy", but I'm certainly a big fan.
Oops, I meant PC, not PS. Sorry!
This sounds great. I've had a PSP for many months now and it's very neat to see all the new uses for it. I can put movies on a memory sticks for watching on a plane (instead of a laptop or portable dvd player). It plays games, of course. It can be used as a locationfree TV, even though I don't have the hardware... but it's good to know that it's capable. I use it to surf the web wirelessly when I'm somewhere bored and don't have a laptop (waiting in the car for someone). It would be neat to be able to use it as a GPS. Then all you have to do is buy a UMD with maps on it, or a memory stick with maps on it.
Said is before, if this works anything like their car GPS, its going to suck.
Also, how about some DAMN screen shots of the maps, and - JESUS, that thing looks shitty. Form Sony I would have expected osmething more svelt.
very interesting to see this coming round again. i want to know about the software... lets see some shots of that. is it going to run off the memory stick, or sap juice with some UMD (one UMD with maps for europe, for japan, for the US etc.)
When I saw the photo, my first thought was "Why is engadget reviewing urinals?" Then I looked again.
Opinion has not changed much.
I took the same pictures at E3 before the PSP was launched. What makes them any more real without actual pics of a powered on PSP with working GPS software?
