Apple's "It's Showtime" event on September 12th confirmed
Yes, it appears that at least one part of the Apple rumor mill is true: there will be an Apple special event one week from today, on September 12, at 10:00AM Pacific (1:00PM Eastern, 5:00PM GMT) at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in downtown San Francisco -- coinciding exactly with the opening day of the Apple Expo in Paris. Now for those of you keeping score at home, we may or may not see an updated nano, a new version of iTunes, a new Airport Express-type video streaming device, a new iMac, and/or possibly iTunes movie downloads. Or, his Steveness may pull another rabbit out of his hat entirely -- either way, you'll know where to find live, play-by-play coverage.[Via MacUser, thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Alex @ Sep 5th 2006 3:23PM
I'm going with iTMS movie downloads plus something else relatively unspectacular and probabyl unrelated to iTMS.
Shawn @ Sep 5th 2006 3:32PM
roflmao. I was JUST listening to the part of the podcast where they were specualting whether or not there would be an event, I hit the site, and there it is. Great timing.
WakkaWakka @ Sep 5th 2006 3:33PM
Well, the 'It's showtime' title and searchlights give it away really, don't they? It's absolutely certain now that we'll see the movie store unveiled. Just for the US though, no doubt.
Jeff @ Sep 5th 2006 3:34PM
"It's Showtime" .. gotta be movie/video related. I am putting my money on iTunes w/ movie download.
Jeremy @ Sep 5th 2006 3:38PM
Hey, at least we know Apple won't be announcing a processor switch back to PowerPC. Heh.
Well there will probably be an update to iTunes... maybe version 6.1 or 7.0. Especially if they are going to be adding in some sort of movie feature.
Or heck, if they add in a movie feature maybe they will make a completely new Application to mark the occasion?
STEVE @ Sep 5th 2006 3:40PM
HANDBRAKE + NETFLIX = MY ITMS MOVIE REQUIERMENTS :-P

Isn't that 6PM GMT, not 5PM?
lastangelman @ Sep 5th 2006 4:23PM
Expect to see unveiled either a business class or consumer class Mac that runs XP apps natively.
Taylor Alexander @ Sep 5th 2006 4:32PM
Expect to see a golden dancing ferret called iMaulU that steals shiny ipods so you have to buy new ones.

kory @ Sep 5th 2006 4:33PM
yeah, it's DEF related to the itunes movie store with the "it's showtime" tag...that, or apple is at risk of being canceled and put that on the invites as and underhanded jab at the network that is currently airing them. wait. that wasn't apple...(;
Dan @ Sep 5th 2006 4:51PM
iMedia??? No, that just need to change iTunes Music Store to iTunes Media Store.
quecojones @ Sep 5th 2006 4:57PM
@airpolgas:
Not really, just call it iTM^2S... the M == music == movie.
Arnoldson @ Sep 5th 2006 4:58PM
@ Scott - "Isn't that 6PM GMT, not 5PM?"
5pm GMT = 6pm BST
Peter @ Sep 5th 2006 4:59PM
so appears the rumours have died about them announcing MBP Core 2 Duo?
Robb @ Sep 5th 2006 5:16PM
Why no iphone talk?
PhilJ @ Sep 5th 2006 5:19PM
I'm guessing a video service as you guys are, or even a newer DVR product for the Macs, but I'm going with the name "Showtime" since they already have a relationship with the movie channel.

Ahhh so no true video iPod to go with the iTunes Media Store? Ahhh *crosses fingers*
rickm @ Sep 5th 2006 6:35PM
Instead of the leather carrying case that didn't sell they'll introduce one that will sell:
iPleather
Since retro is in, why not a vinyl carrying case? One complete with seat sweat?

Watch it be frakkin' software...
Please Mad Dog, enlighten me!
Travis @ Sep 5th 2006 7:06PM
i hope it's the apple moped!!!!!!!!
Padriac @ Sep 5th 2006 7:07PM
Apple pre-announced an event. Great. Now I can watch fanboy expectations skyrocket so that the entire internet can be disappointed when Apple doesn't release an iCar in both shiny white and black.
I really wish Apple just moved to a "complete surprise" announcement strategy. No expectation build-up that way.
SinisterDexter @ Sep 5th 2006 8:53PM
So there's this event in the morning in Frisco the opening day of the Paris Expo... Why not make the announcements in gay Paris? What time does the Expo shut down Monday Evenin'? Hmmm.
Erika @ Sep 5th 2006 9:59PM
What's next huh? it's wait and see...Erika ;)
Justin @ Sep 5th 2006 10:58PM
In my opinion, it wouldn't make sense to me that they are going to release an updated iMac / nano... because their edu. promo ends 4 days after and that means they are going to ship the nano for free + sell the new imacs for the last 4 days of promo
Dan @ Sep 6th 2006 12:02AM
@Justin
Last year they did the same thing. They released teh nano but excluded it from the back-to-school deal. No big problem.
Eric @ Sep 6th 2006 12:58AM
Im thinking movie downloads. I mean theyre using hollywood lights and saying "its showtime" right ?
keith waddington @ Sep 6th 2006 2:38AM
I hope most people writing in this thread are under thirteen and slightly behind the rest of the class. It certainly seems that way.

Ninjaneer @ Sep 6th 2006 10:02PM
Justin, the iMac isn't included in the free nano promotion. It's only Macbooks, Macbook Pros, Mac Pros, and Powermac G5s.
Torsten @ Sep 7th 2006 3:51AM
Maybe of interest for visitors of the Apple Expo in Paris: Free 60 Minute Paris mp3 audioguides available for the (old and new) iPods under iAudioguide.com (in French, Italian, English and German) and Ricksteves.com
airpolgas @ Sep 7th 2006 3:45PM
It will also coincide with the release of the original Star Wars Trilogy.

Hmm.. I wonder if they will let you download all 6 via iTunes. Seriously, they need to change the name of iTunes to iMedia.
Sean DL @ Sep 8th 2006 1:04PM
"Why not make the announcements in gay Paris?"
Because whatever it is...Paris won't be getting it....
"I really wish Apple just moved to a "complete surprise" announcement strategy. No expectation build-up that way"
Blame the press..they are the one leaking this...How else can Apple get the media to go to there event if they don't announce it to them? They could jsut release stuff and send out press releases, but that's not Apple style....
xglider @ Sep 10th 2006 10:38PM
Anyone note that the last Tiki Bar podcast is in a wide format and unable to run on present iPods? Wasn't Tiki Bar the podcast shown with the introduction of the first video iPod?.....curious!

iTunes Music Store is down and it simply says 'iTunes Store' now. Movie downloads ahoy!
Linda Sands @ Sep 12th 2006 2:08PM
The Apple On-Line Store is also down. The graphic says it will be back up in about an hour.
I'm hoping for the iTunes Movie Store, as well as a video iPod with a larger screen. The phone would be nice, as I am getting sick of my LG.
