iTunes 7 with iTunes Movie Store announced!
As if those spotlit "It's Showtime" Apple announcements weren't going to yield the iTunes Movie Store; just in time too, as CinemaNow and Movielink have been around for ages, Vongo's been kicking for months, Amazon's Unbox just hit the streets the other day, Microsoft's Zune video player is just around the corner, and Netflix's movie service is expected any time. With the iTunes Movie Store now available in Apple's new iTunes 7 you'll be able to download full res (640 x 480) movies at $9.99 apiece for most titles, $14.99 for new releases and $12.99 for pre-orders. The files are protected, of course, with FairPlay DRM; they'll play back on your iPod, but not much else, unfortunately, so if you want movies the iTunes way, be prepared to watch them in iTunes or to get yourself an iPod. Sadly, it seems the rumors were true of it being a Disney-only store: Apple so far has only managed to procure 70 movies for their launch, from the Disney-owned Walt Disney, Pixar, Touchstone, and Miramax studios. They're promising frequent updates, though, and they will be launching new movies at the same time that they're released on DVD. As for iTunes 7, there's plenty of good news to be had beyond the addition of movie downloads. Gapless playback (which is happenin' in all the new iPods) is the big winner, and iTunes 7 can go through your whole library and fix previously downloaded tracks to play gapless. The player has also gotten a substantial face lift, borrowing from WMP11 stylings for track listings, tossing in Cover Flow (a third-party OS X eyecandy favorite which Apple apparently bought), a good helping of whitespace and Apple's own design know-how.

Hmmm, it's a little thing, but I really did prefer the green notes rather than the blue.
Random songs in my 80 GB iTunes library have (!) icons and iTunes says it cannot find the file but I can easily browse to it. After a couple exits/restarts most of the (!) are gone but some are still there. What the hell!?
Well, I dunno if anybody else is having this problem, but I just grabbed iTunes 7.0 for winXP and it's got a slight problem. It doesn't play anything. Something tells me this isn't a cool new feature.
The browse by album cover feature sounds identical to the option available on the Sony Vaio Pocket. I smell another lawsuit.
Did they finally make it 100% windows xp 64 compatible? The 6's were broken by stupid windows updates. I hope this one works with out having to unistal reinstall stuff, and that it actually burns disk in xp64. No other itunes versions let you burn disks in xp 64. So I hope it works well with 64xp cause they're new core 2 duo chips have got the ability to run that os and my current system runs it but no cd burning support :( so I hope they fixed that problem. It was just a driver issue they needed to fix. :(
I'm having some major troubles with the album artwork fetching.
1) When I try to right click on a song and "Clear Downloaded Artwork" nothing happens.
2) When I then try to download artwork (after clearing it manually) nothing happens most of the time.
3) When something does happen, there's no process indicator to show me it's happening, so I don't know what's going on.
4) The album art isn't iTMS quality, which is what I was hoping for. It seems to get the art from the same sources as the 3rd party apps.
Can anyone confirm my troubles?
I had HIGH hopes for iTunes 7 after seeing the new album views. But I hate the new album view. It just sucks so hardcore. I have TONS and TONS of Various Artist albums and it's just no good when it's grouped by both the album name and artist when every single track on a 30 track CD has a different artist. I hope Apple's coming up with an update in the next few days 'cos I hate iTunes more than I did before.

I am about to reinstall iTunes6 back on my XP work machine because all the music is static... I hope my Mac at home doesn't have this problem.
Does iTunes v.7 break QTFairUse6 or the new version of myTunes? Can't say I would be terribly surprised if it did, but I don't have any protected tracks to test on this computer...
I'm in Norway, have english XP MCE 2005, alle english/us software and US iTunes.....but each time i download iTunes 7 from Apple.com, I automatically get the Norwegian version.....I WANT THE ENGLISH GODDAMMMIDDD......
Any one have a solution?
Canada gets the shaft again. Thanks Apple. This happens everytime a new feature for itunes comes along.

SAME ISSUE HERE...
apple software update now has itunes7, a new quicktime update, and frontrow update that just appeared, they werent there a a few minutes ago... downloading now.
Dan,
I tested Qtfairuse 6 using a minor update the creator had put into to try to make it work with itunes 7. While the dump files come out, it seems you can't really do anything with them.
Hoepfully it will be fixed soon.
song playback skips haf a second whenever another app tries to play a sound (instant message alert from msn messenger..)
grr
Yes, it adds gapless to the 5.0G Video iPod.
And about the "Various Artists" issue: Select the album, and mark it as a "Compilation". That will solve your issue.
Apple didn't say anything about gapless for the new shuffle.
Nano2, yes. 5.5G. yes.
Anyone know if it's possible to re-download existing shows in the new 640x480 res, without paying twice?
And once again. No movie or TV love for Canada. Whee. Tell me again why I should care about Apple?
ipod Software (firmware) 1.2 is available!
Even though iTunes says that 5g ipods are up to date software version 1.2 is in there...
You must restore the ipod and it will restore using the new ipod software 1.2
note that this does NOT give search function, but it does provide compatability for games and the newly released 640x480 movies/videos
RobP
You don't need to restore to get ipod software 1.2 -
it does work ( I wasted my time doing it)
but it turns out (with ipod pluged in and running itunes 7) go to help -> check for updates
then you can just do the update.

One thing I wish Apple would do now that they have bumped the rez on the TV shows is that they let us redownload the higher rez versions for free. I mean, I just bought some shows the other night and now I could have gotten them 2 days later at a higher rez. Other than that I am liking iTunes 7.
These movies are not expensive. They are $10 and $13, DVD's MSRP are $30
What - no active download link at
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/?
Wha....?
to JC about the garbeled noise with the latest version. I toyed a bit with the software and might have found the problem you had.
iTunes is basing its audio configuration with quicktime, sometimes garbled sound is because you are playing the file in a type that your soundcard/speakers doesnt support. In my case when I tested a the different settings, switching to 24 bits gave me garbled sound so if you had setup audio in quicktime to run at 24 bits, drop it down back to 16, then close quicktime, close itunes and restart itunes for a (should be) fully fonctionnal software.
Note also to others that had "no sound" issues or things like that, you might wanna take alook at the settings too, just in case this would fix it too.
Hope it helps.

you cant use command+1 to bring up the itunes window anymore... grr
This is dumb. People are still blaming the likes of Apple, MS, etc for DRM. You're barking up the wrong tree. Don't like the DRM limitations on the media bought on the iTunes store (or other store) then put hte blame where it belongs. At the RIAA and MPAA's feet.
Apple does try to make their DRM as painless as possible. Music and movie files bought at the iTunes store can be played on up to 5 authorized devices (computers). There's nothing to stop you from authorizing it to a couple of friends' or relative's computers so they can watch what you watch. The no burning to dvd of the movie files sucks royally so you basically are stuck playing the files from your iPod or authorized PC's.
The selling of movies seem a tad underwhelming but it's positive they're upping the quality to 640x480 which is nearly DVD quality as far as pixels go. Close enough to not matter. I hear complaints about the lack of movie studios on iTunes but I don't think this will be a major issue. Let's all remember that Disney was the only one on board the iTunes TV show download train and look how popular that is now with pretty much every show available on iTunes.
So it looks like the Amazon store is going to have more movie selections, once the dust has settled.
640x480 = lame.
You know I installed itunes 7 earlier today and for some reason I cant get it to show the album cover view at all it just says "itunes is unable to browse album covers on this computer." I am even logged in to the music store. Does anyone know what will make it work?
I looks like this has turned into a help forum. But I'm throwing this out anyway.
In version 6.05 there was a ministore window that floated under your library to try to help you spend more money. I turned it off so I don't know the details. I seem to remember that some people said leave it off because it was Apple's way of getting you to consent to have the contents of your library scanned.
I turned on the get album art feature in iTunes 8 with poor results, and I'm not seeing that shopping window. Is the album art Apple's way of getting you consent to let them scan your library?
I absolutely love the new iTunes. Browsing my cds is now like flipping through old LPs and I can enjoy the art work again. Previous versions were good for organising etc but now this thing is FUN as well.
And i love all the complaints from the losers here! If you don't like iTunes ask for a refund! Oh, yeah, it's free! And if you don't like iTunes why are you even reading this? Oh, yeah. you're losers!
Happy listening.

Having same problem - Just downloaded a game but can't transfer to my 5G Video iPod - it says my iPod is up-to-date. When I try to synch the ipod it says the game isn't authorized to play on this computer (??). Also, I thought with the update we would get the cool search feature?
I can't play this in a real DVD player? Screw you guys, I'm going home. Seriously. I don't care whose fault it is, Apple or the MPAA or Bugs Bunny. I'm not buying it if I can't burn it for a real DVD player.
Apple apparently thinks that it will be able to sell "iTV" later on, which will entail people paying $300 to be able to stream videos from their computer to their TV, getting around the issue of not actually being able to play on a real DVD player. This is lame for the following reasons: 1, I'm not paying $300 extra to play DVD's the right way when I can just keep buying/renting them as usual. 2, there is no way you could get wireless fast enough for that at this point. 3, I don't want yet another device. Keep it simple, stupid.
Also, 640x480 is better than what they currently have, but not DVD resolution. When I buy movies, I'm making an investment, and I am going to do it right or not do it at all.
Basically, the new movie store = lame. It was funny to see Apple's share go up by 50 cents. If this announcement didn't suck so much, it would have gone up by a lot more. Apple had the opportunity to blow away its competition again, and failed.
Similarly, who the hell is going to buy the new 80gb iPod because it has 20gb more of storage? I have way more music than almost all of my friends and I'm not close to filling up the remaining 60gb. Videos might do that, but even then, you're only talking about another 16gb (after formatting) for a reinvestment of another $350. It's just not worth it.
Mainly, though, Apple screwed up on the "new" iPod video by not making the screen bigger. That's the only real improvement it needed. Now they will lose out to Microsoft in that respect.
The new Nano and Shuffle are cool, though, I must admit. Good job going to 8GB for the Nano, making the Shuffle like a lapel pin, and going back to multicolor. I like that. That is probably the only really good part of this announcement.

For the people complaining about not being able to burn movies to a DVD...that's the RIAA's fault, not Apple. Steve Jobs pushed hard, and this is the best he could get. However, for you techie types who are really complaining...WTF! I haven't used a DVD player in 2 yrs. I got a cheap laptop that handles that...DVD's, CD's are old school.
Has anyone had any intermittent problems with library tracks skipping and crashing badly when using the internet? - perhaps a firmware update very soon?
So, does the new version offer folder monitoring on your computer (so that your smart playlists monitor the directories on your computer for new songs you've added, changes, etc.?) similar to Windows Media Player? If not, we are forced, once again, to contend with duplicates of all our songs should we update a directory and then import it into our playlists...GAAAW
iTunes 7 will run under Windows Vista (on a MBP via Boot Camp 1.1) however, I found with the album art, your information needs to be exactly what the iTS has, and even then, it dosen't fully work. Now I just need HFS+ to work in Vista to access my library on my MBP.
Is iTunes 7 download limited to US residents or something? I'm in Mexico and for two days my browser shows everything at the iTunes Download page but NOTHING appears below DOWNLOAD NOW. There's simply no way to download the update. Can't wait for that!! Anyone else with this problem?? Where else can I get a copy??
more bugs that tunes!
gah i hate itunes 7.0.0.70!! sound quality is truely terrible. it's currently using av. 15% cpu time on an am2 4200x2 and still skipping on audio files, i've not even tried video yet, i think it might explode!
does apple not do load testing? do they expect itunes to be your main open application?! it's for playing music while you do something useful!!!!
itunes 7 is a horrible release, wait for it to be patched past 7.0.0.70
I tried to download itunes 7 , and halfway through , it gives me an error response that I do not have access to registry key
