Somewhere, we imagine that there has to be a warehouse (or at least a small storeroom) full
of gilded inventory, guarded by a very sad man wondering where his business model went wrong. Still, that hasn't stopped low-end Chinese equipment outfitter
Minox, which is hoping that its new DC1011 24 carat plated camera, iced out with ten 2mm 0.03 carat diamonds along the lens, will be a hit with the absurdly rich (and grossly uninformed) crowd. This 10 megapixel camera has a 2.4-inch screen and a 10.4x digital zoom and also come in mere mortal colors, flavors, and prices, although we don't know what the price is on either model. But we can already feel the folks clamoring for a gold-plated SD card, because
ordinary SD cards would just clash with this Midasian exterior.

UMM, FYI Minox isn't Chinese, it's a German Company with a 75+ year history now owned by Leica. Know worldwide for their miniture SPY equipment, Minox has been making silver, gold, and even platinum special editions for at least 30 years.

Commentor #3 knows of what he speaks. Minox goes back to the 30's as a manufacturer of fine spy cameras originally made in Latvia, then later in Germany. However, one can't tell whether this gold camera adheres to its legacy or is another sad case of a fine marque being licensed out. In any case, Minox should not be referred to as a "low-end Chinese equipment outfitter."

Indeed--Minox is a German company, but as of 2004 they are no longer part of Leica. They are, however, straight from the Leica tradition and not "low end" nor Chinese when it comes to film cameras. Their spy cameras are legendary for the optical quality, and many of them still go for $500 even though they are half a century old.
That said, this digi camera doesn't appear to be high end, and it could be outsourced to a Chinese manufacturer like Apple does with iPods. And although the electronics on this may arguably be low end (don't know, really), how can you call a gold plated, diamond studded camera "low end"?

Aw man, I was gonna make the "Chewie, check the rest of the ship, make sure there aren't any more attached, chewing on the power cables" line!

I realize you guys can't afford full-time fact-checkers, but there's nothing wrong with a quick edit; Minox was incorporated in Central Europe in 1919 and even before Leica / Leitz / Elmar was the highest-end optic producer in Europe. Amalgamated into Leica in 1978, they've been making excellent (film) cameras for many, many years, and had contracts to develop miniaturized cameras for industrial and espionage purposes as far back as 1932. They also invented the 110 film format, the 6mm film format and the double 8 format, all of which were licensed to Kodak at one point. The Leica/Minox plant in Austria still makes excellent and very high-end optics for photographic and scientific use.
While this is a ridiculous looking product I doubt very much that anything about it is cheap or low-quality.
