Toshiba's Satellite A105-S4344 goes Merom
In case you haven't had your fill of Merom-powered notebooks, Toshiba is hoping to spice things up a bit with its oddly-spec'd A105-S4344. We hope you really dig the 6-pounder's "onyx blue metallic" finish, as it's the only available color option at present. If you're still hanging with us, you'll find a 15.4-inch LCD, 1.66GHz T5500 Core 2 Duo CPU, a whole 2GB of RAM, a massive 200GB 4200RPM hard drive, dual-layer DVD burner, 802.11a/b/g, and even a fingerprint reader to boot. Toshiba apparently felt these impressive inclusions could cover up the lackluster Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics, missing Bluetooth, substandard XGA resolution, and the lack of gigabit Ethernet. Anyways, the machine does muster a nice selection of ports, including PCMCIA, ExpressCard, 5-in-1 flash reader, S-Video out, 4-pin FireWire, and a foursome of USB 2.0 ports. Presumably catering to media-centric buyers, Toshiba includes Windows XP Media Center Edition and a reported "4.22 hours of battery life" to watch at least a couple decent flicks while on the move. The snazzy blue A105-S4344 is currently available for $1,399.99 (after rebate).

looks good. but in my experience, toshiba doesn't make the greatest of computers

Wow, this is very impressive Laptop especially, when you look at its fair price. As you know, Intel processors are a bit expensive but with these facilities this laptop (especially, with its beautiful color) looks very well. I wish I could know the weight of this laptop.
yum...
except i cant get a lappy till im off to college...
A 200GB HD? Are those for sale anywhere as a part for other notebooks?
4200RPM drive? Brutal. I would've preferred a 160GB drive or so, with at least a 5400RPM rotational speed. Methinks this model will give Toshiba time to tweak another model with a possible GeForce 7700 and a faster drive (among other things).
This machine sounds great for some on with high storage needs. The part i find interesting is the only connectivity item avaliable is WiFi with relatively slow speeds, good for the net but not for large files. So with the lack of a decent gigabit connection how are you going to fill the 200gb monster HDD?
According to the specs this laptop has an Intel PRO/1000 VE Network Connection - 10/100/1000 Base-TX Ethernet, so it does support Gigabit Ethernet.
Looking to purchase the Toshiba A105-S4344 tommorrow. The fella at the store has got down to $1200.00 - is it worth it?? and what issues am I likely to encounter with themachine. NEED ADVICE PLEASE.
I have the Toshiba Satellite A105 and it is absolutly wonderful...I haven't had any problem with it. I love the wide screen. I highly recommend this one. Just don't fall for the rebates if they have any because Toshiba is still trying to get out of it. I am disappointed in that.
I got the A105 for xmas I loved it. I dropped it and the screen crashed. I was so upset i went back to circiut city where i got it. They said it couldn't be fixed. I bought another newer one, and then found out that the screen can be replaced for a little over $200.00. I got the screen replaced ,all it was was taking 4 screws out to fix it. I took the new one back and had to pay a restock fee of 15%. Hope this helps if someone drops theirs the way I did.
I purchased an A105-4344 in september 2006 and I am VERY pleased with it. The purchase was made for programming at an extremely competitive Computer Science program and it has performed wonderfully. The only real drawback is that the graphics card can't handle the high end games, but this is inconsequential to me.
This laptop handles media and 3-D programming with NO problem. I have even been able to double boot Windows XP pro and Linux at the same time (Very labor intensive). Any ordinary user looking to this laptop for anything except high-end gaming will be VERY impressed! Battery life is a touch low, but more speed dissipates more power so the trade-off is utterly unavoidable. The purchase of a larger battery at some point would remedy that problem as well. Also, DUAL-LAYER DVD BURNER! Need I say more!
