Apple quietly releases iTunes 7.0.1
In typical Apple fashion, they've just updated their jukebox app with hardly a hint of the changes, other than that it "addresses stability and performance issues with Cover Flow, CD importing, iPod syncing, and more." We suppose there's only one way to find out if iTunes 7.0.1 actually manages to fix all those problems that cropped up in the initial release, but if it's any consolation, we managed to install our very own copy without frying our machine or experiencing any of those formerly reported problems of Cover Flow kicking puppies.[Thanks, Rob]

This is seriously ridiculous, it demands you to install the application and sadly enough I can't even open it!!!!
It says "Cannot find resource to run this resource correctly" Not exactly but around those guidelines. I searched tons of forums but it was only for XP OS or MAC OS not Vista, b/c no one answers to the people who has problems with Vista, Cya guys, I spent already 20 minutes trying to find a solution I hope I dont spend a whole hour just trying to get Itunes to function, seriously, this is becoming as dysfunctional as people say "Vista is as uncompatible" Which I admit it is, aimiable but they've pretty much solved most problems with Vista. :D Hopefully, Apple doesn't go in the same derivative.
THANK GOD!!
I never had a problem with iTunes 7, so I hope 7.0.1 is as good.
Itunes 6 and it's versions had their moments, but none were as bad as having itunes demand a minimum of 50% of my cpu power like this lemon did. It has crashed everyday at least twice since I got it. Earlier it just shut down my pc (Running a 3GHZ P4 PC with 1 GB of RAM.) So this update was much needed. Thats a PC guy. My MAC roomate loves it (as did I the first hour)and cover flow is cool, but damn... it was infested with all kinds of BUGS.
its great, works with multi-plugin and everything.
I only had occasional problems with iTunes 7... CoverFlow never worked, and I had audio problems twice in the time I had it... The update seems to have fixed the audio problems (though they weren't consistent enough to notice them get fixed), and CoverFlow will actually work now, but the text is messed up on the CoverFlow display. I also don't like what it does to non-square album art...
My iTunes is still crashing after the update. We'll see if it can see my iPod when I get home...
SWEET! hopefully it works...
Quietly? What did you expect e-mail notification or perhaps a press release?
There is also an update for the iPod Nano (And possibly other versions of the iPod range)
firmware 1.0.2 change log? - Bug Fixes.
Seems to have fixed the problems I was having (major audio static). Hurray, now I can stop using windows media player.
For some reason there seems to be a black diagonal line acroos some of my artwork in the cover flow view. However this black line is not on the aartwork if u view it on any of the other views. Hope the sound on this version works properly.
it fixed my problem with converting my mac ipod to pc format.
I'm just curious, were the bugs with the Mac or Windows Version, or both?
AAAGGGHHHH-I've downloaded the new itunes and it was working fine for about half an hour but now when i open another window or scroll up and down in itunes the music stutters. Don't get me wrong here the update is working far better than 7 ever worked for me but when are we going to be getting the finished product apple?
This is the problem I had with iTunes 7.0.0, even though I had never had any problems with previous releases. I also had this problem when I first ran 7.0.1, but after exiting out of frustration, I later started iTunes again, and haven't had any problems since... After a few days we should be able to tell whether this version was ready for release or not.
I should have never fallen for all the initial iTunes 7 release hype... There wasn't anything wrong with iTunes 6, but the prospect of self-downloading album art lured me in.
Some of the stuttering may actually be due to the computer itself trying to process too much, not iTunes. What else is running at the time? How much RAM? CPU power?
My biggest complaint is that my iTunes movies come out choppy during fast action scenes. Well not really choppy, but there is a definite horizontal break line in the middle of the screen in the shape of a "z". I know it's probably because my 20" widescreen monitor is too big for my video card, but I would think my brand new Core 2 Duo 6600 system w 3GB RAM, and a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE 256 would be able to keep up??? All other media formats like divx and xvid work great, just not iTunes movies at full screen. Any1 got any suggestions on how to improve their playback? besides getting a newer video card (not really cost effective just to play iTunes movies)...
thanks,
Chris

Now let them fix the massive podcast problem that came from iPod 1.2 Do they even test these updates in-house?
Ugh, I was hoping this would fix my choppy audio problems but all it did was trade them for something more annoying... When I hit the Next or Previous play control buttons, it waits about half a second before playing the next or previous track.
Alrighty, 25.7MB download for 7.01... downloading it now. I'll know right away whether 7.0.1 fixes the "music next door" sound I get on some songs.
...less than a minutes left on the dl.
...time for a joke. A pirate walks into a bar with a ships wheel sticking out of his pants. He says, "Arrr barkeep, I'd like a glass of rum." Bartender says "Sure, I'll get your rum, but tell me why you have a wheel in your pants?" Pirate says, "Arrr, it's driving me nuts!"
Damnit, I have to reboot...
Playing some songs.... sounds nice and loud... playing Prince... hey, sounds good. Problem fixed. :)
it still sux
Argh... 7.0 was working fine for me, no problems, but I figured "what the hell", now I have major stuttering problems with 7.01... WinXP, AMD 3200+, 1.5GB RAM - this computer is not high end by today's standards but it's still plenty fast, this computer should not be having problems. Only happens when iTunes is in the background, and I'm doing something else like opening firefox or even just loading a web page, but that's pretty much all the time :(
Apple eschewed a beta release by shipping iTunes 7.0 *as* the beta. LOL Too bad it made them look incompetent in the process.
well, apple didn't fix the problem i've been complaining about. you still can't drag-and-drop music from windows to the iPod. you have to drag music to the library first, then drag it to the iPod. also, i drag-and-dropped album art directly into the iPod, and that didn't work either. how much you wanna bet that when I hook my iPod up to my work computer it will still say that the iPod is in "recovery mode" and needs to be restored?
i've been looking forward to this update since i upgraded to iTunes 7, but it looks like i'll have to keep waiting...
Uh, that's not a bug/problem -- that's the iTunes/iPod paradigm. The iPod is the full or partial portable collection of your music LIBRARY. It is not a simple hard disk you can drag your pirated music onto.
What the other guy said. iTunes has never worked that way and was never intended to.
things I'm hoping are fixed:
1. crazy static if the volume is anywhere below 100% - just on my desktop (pc), not my thinkpad.
2. not raising to the foreground when un-minimized from being in toolbar mode (on any pc I've tried)
3. crazy high memory/cpu usage
4. inability to stream any apple lossless music to my airport express, or play it from another computer that can see the shared music through bonjour.
5. not syncing with my ipod mini.. I had to kill ipodservice and reinstall the service, then restart the computer, and it would connect to my ipod, say that it was already updated, and disconnect.. undock, redock, and it doesn't detect again. rinse and repeat. I am totally unable to update the music on my ipod!! argh argh.
1. Crazy static seems to be fixed on my desktop.. I haven't actually gone up to test it, but I did test it through windows Remote Desktop Connection and it was fine. It's also fine on my laptop.
2. Still doesn't come to the foreground.. argh argh
3. crazy high memory/cpu usage
@ Thataboy
no, you're wrong. the way i have always used my iPod is to select the iPod in iTunes (so the music on the iPod is showing), then just drag and drop albums (which i keep in individual folders in Windows) onto that list of music. then the music just goes directly onto the iPod without ever going into the iTunes library. try doing this; you'll see it act like it's working, but the music never shows up.
this worked in iTunes 6, but it doesn't work in iTunes 7. if anyone is able to confirm that they do or do not have this bug, please let me know.
It's like this.
http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.htm
Apple I want a slim simple player for music and podcasts. Nothing more. I can guaruntee I am not the only one.
I wonder why people were so surprised that iTunes 7.0 was filled with bugs; I mean this is Apple, the same company that makes the craptastic iPod, so it only makes sense to have crappy software to go along with it.
well im sure a 70% marketshare really explains the crap you're talking about..
Microsoft Windows has what, 94+% of the home PC market? So what's your point about a measly 70%? Market share means little to you fanboys when it doesn't benefit your meek argument but is extremely important when it may help your point (it doesn't in this case, it actually does the opposite); and your current iPod & iTunes will continue to be crap regardless of this great market share you speak of.
"shon"
This is the fisrt itunes with such a buggy release.
70% who gives a shit
I thought Apple products "just worked" ? (snorts derisively)
Yeah, i still have the minor bug where, if album flow is on, and itunes is open but beneath another window, the cover art (by itself) wants to show up over my current application when the song changes. Clicking somewhere fixes it, but it's still lame...
-Taylor
Still doesn't fix my quicktime registry issue. I can't install. I know others have this issue so It isn't isolated. Get your shit together Apple.
I need a new player
My intelmac-running friend and my pc-running self have had no problems with iTunes 7.
I fell so left out, I never had problems with iTunes 7...not with coverflow, nor with my iPods. We sure some of the problems aren't caused by third party software and windows itself?
What's up with the automatic update feature on windows? I would have thought that might allow for this upgrade to take place without having to download the whole app all over again - guess not.
still takes hours to sync my 5G ipod...v6 would sync in a minute or two.
Nevermind, it didn't fix my audio problem, now it hickups when I scroll in firefox (wtf?)
6.0 ran pretty solid, though it was a but of a RAM-hog. The "flair factor" of the album art got me to upgrade...but now the album art no longer shows up on my ipod (even w. that option checked) and transferring songs onto my (old school) shuffle w. the 128kbs mode enabled takes EONS! maybe winamp wasn't so bad after all ;-)
i hate the fact that i have to download a complete new verison of itunes to update it. soo much time wasted. couldn't they just have make a way to update without all the hassle. :(
Wow... my Nano still doesn't work right with iTunes 7.0.1... I don't believe it.
is iTunes 7.0.77 different than 7.0.1? so far i dont have any problems with my iTunes...i may wait until another relase comes out...
Well i decided to repost to my old comment...i took the dive and installed 7.0.1 and the darn thing wont close...it just kepps on playing songs and crud...the infamous CTRL ALT DEL Keys had to be used...*sigh*
I don't know what's the deal with this update, but trying to install it on both my pc and mac failed. My mac tells me to quit itunes during the install and nothing happens when I click ok, my PC keeps looking for a network resource that is unavailable.
I have iTunes, but I don't use it at all. I'll stick with winamp and windows media player until I can finally afford a Mac. Besides, I never really could associate too well with iTunes, it's not the greatest media player in the world.
With the new update it wanted to update one of my podcasts (diggnation) with an episode from 2005... even after I unsubscribed and resubscribed. It started up completely black until I clicked around. And the downloading bar is messed up too. 4 shows downloading on sidebar, only 2 shows in the actual download window.
iTunes 7 is still a sick bug ridden puppy.
iTunes 7.0.1 keeps crashing on my older Mac (900 MHZ G3 Running Tiger). I didn't really want an online media superstore, just a place where I could buy some songs and play my music with software that "just works." Am I the only one that wants that?
99.9% of these problems are coming from Windows users.
Now put 1 and 1 together and you get your answer.

A purely unscientific observation, but it seems a lot of the larger problems with iTunes 7 have been on Windows machines.
I see some minor annoyances and areas for improvement with iT7 on my iBook but no show stoppers. I think it's still a fine upgrade.
Perhaps Apple has yet to fully grasp how to dumb themselves down enough to create software for Windows? :)
mac users can't even admit apple has a problem when it releases a shoddy version of a program that was working perfectly fine in previous versions. god, i hate pious apple geeks.
btw, you can give it up because no amount of stability or security can make up for the fact that i can't do half of what i do in windows on a mac
hey craig,
why don't you tell us all the great stuff you can do on your windows machine.
hey, better still, put a link to your web site so we can all enjoy the great stuff you can do.

"hey, better still, put a link to your web site so we can all enjoy the great stuff you can do."
Yes, he should, so we can compare it to your great site, that looks like it was created on an overclocked Lisa (with the 5mb external of course.)
"99.9% of these problems are coming from Windows users. Now put 1 and 1 together and you get your answer."
I did and your scientific facts are unproven (and will remain so) and your "made on a Mac" site is garbage.
Yup -- stutters with v7.0.1 all right. However -- just as problematic for me -- when the new version imported all my audiobooks (and there is a slew), it put them in the music category. Only audiobooks purchased from iTunes store appear in the audiobooks category. Nice. According to posts on iTunes discussions, you must rename the imported files from .m4a to .m4b...and then go through some rigamarole so that iTunes can fine the files again. Why bother applying a genre setting to the files in the first place?
oh.. they fixed the bug where you couldn't add custom art to more than one item at a time. that was a grossly incompetent bug. Now to go back through all my albums and see which ones it messed up.
I'm a WINDOWS USER.
I have a few friends that prefer Macs to PCs, and that's fine. For the purposes they use their comps for, I agree that they should.
However, I'm not the most computer literate person out there, but I've always admired what Apple's itunes worked. I went out and bought myself an AMD 64 3400, 2 G RAM, 300 G HD. My first program downloaded itunes 6, for one of my sole purposes of my comp purchase was to better organize my 1800 CD collection. It took a while, but I've imported my entire library into it. It's been running like a dream, and I think it may have crashed twice since I've run it. I've even organized every song with the proper track #, album title, genre and album art (I'm a Virgo - I can't help it).
IT'S BEEN INCREDIBLE - I HAVE REFERRED COUNTLESS OTHER "PC USERS" TO FOLLOW SUIT.
Now the funny part: Anyone that's had their itunes updated to the new Ver.7 has been VERY UNHAPPY. The worst thing about it all is that there doesn't seem to be a way of getting back to Ver.6, and they're P.O.'d with the way it's running.
I'm VERY FORTUNATE that I never agreed to update from my now cherished itunes6, and am very pleased with everything it's provided me with.
NOTE: I have itunes running almost ALL the time. If my PC is on, then itunes is most likely running. I have Windows XP Media Centre as my O.S., and I've been checking out various blogs to convince myself to upgrade to Ver.7.
I HAVE NOT FOUND ANY INFO TO CONVINCE ME THAT I SHOULD UPGRADE YET.
So, to all you MAC users: I agree that your O.S. is better than what we use, but my itunes has been running FANTASTICALLY, so offer up some other excuse to why Apple's itunes 7 is acting wonky with whomever has used it. Maybe Apple has realized how many users have chosen itunes as their music library organizer (ipod sales have helped this to happen), that now they've tried to monopolize the music library market by adding all these "new gadgets" so that you'll be prompted to download from them exclusively.
I'm just a 'dumb PC user', so if you have any answers, PLEASE ENLIGHTEN ME.
1.
I did't want to install iTunes 7.0 because I feared bedbugs that would bite me....so I trolled a few forums and waited for reaction. (I was right......killer bedbugs, so I still use v.6)
2.
I wanted the new Nano, but with the problems with iTunes, I waited and found out people had problems (Here Apple LOST a customer, which is very baaad for them)...
3.
I saw the new iTunes update, but AGAIN I waited.....(AND I was right again, phu....)
Here Apple has made three mistakes, resulting in loosing a customer. I guess I'm NOT the only one. It's a shame for Apple, but they SHOULD now better.
BTW: I'm using www.mediamonkey.com now and after some initial gripes, I am starting to find it much better then iTunes......(But it does not look half as good on your screen, but what does that matter if it "just works"..... ;)
I don't understand why is there so many fanboys... It would be different if you ownded the company but since most of you don't (owning stock is not owning a company.) Admit it, Apple launched some bugged out software just like any other company would do so... Last I knew we still don't live in a perfect world and Apple, Microsoft or your moms isn't either(Most of you were probably a mistake.)
As for for me I think I'm going to stick to version 6 since its not a power hungry app.
From my testing, all of the artwork problems have been fixed. Downloaded artwork is also embedded in the file, and dropping artwork on the panel in the lower left adds it to all the tracks on the album.
No problems at all for me with iTunes 7, other than CoverFlow running too slow to really be useful (I blame my graphics card; this is a 3D application).
Just dl'd 7.01; no difference at all for me in anything.
yes, it does work that way. please read my other post. i was able to do it in itunes 6 (and prior), but it doesn't work in itunes 7. it acts like it's working, but it doesn't. definitely a bug.
I have an AMD 3500 and 2GB RAM in my pc. I don't think it should be experiencing any problems really. I loaded up firefox and the trouble started.
the problems i heard about on macs are with older slower models like g3 ibooks etc. I have a g5 tower and never had a single problem. it uses between 5 and 9 % processor power.
Let's face it, this is exactly why Macs run better than PCs: Apple know what hardware their software will be dealing with, and so do third party companies.
Feel free to argue ad nauseam . . .

Let's face it, keith waddington is an idiotic fanboy who trys to post his opinions as facts yet never backs them up (use this thread as an example)...and his website looks like crap.
maybe one day it wont crash every hour in vista RC1
Hard to believe, but this update has made things much worse.
Artwork, the little blue "playing" symbol in the number column and the track playing information window in the top bezel all now remain fixed on the first track played.
Also, the response-to-command time lag is more pronounced, and hence more irritating.
What a complete b@*%s up!
20" iMac Early 2006 (2 GHz Intel Core Duo) Mac OS X (10.4.7)
Oh yeah, I'm running Vista RC1 so I don't really have too much room to complain about visual bugs. But the podcasting getting all fuxored?? That's an Apple/Stevie J problem I'd think. Hope this "patch" gets patched ASAP.
"Apple eschewed a beta release by shipping iTunes 7.0 *as* the beta. LOL Too bad it made them look incompetent in the process."
And that comment makes YOU look incompetent. Nothing is perfect, and the Internet has a way of taking remote issues and amplifying them so as to seem widespread. See complaints about the PS2.
I installed 7.0.1 last night. Today I came home from work to a BSOD. I hope this just some kinda coincidence.
I can't seem to install iTunes 7.0.1 on my computer. It says that there's a problem with Quicktime and it requires Quicktime to run iTunes. I've uninstalled Quicktime so that the iTunes 7.0.1 setup file will install both Quicktime and the newer version of iTunes. But it doesn't work! Why the hell do I always have this problem!? I had it with iTunes 6.5! If anyone could shine some light on the subject it would be very much appreciated.
And it sucketh mightily.
It looks like Apple has picked up a bunch of laid-off Microsoft Millenium Edition programmers for this kludge of an 'upgrade.'
Strips album art from older ipods, and skips all the time in the Windows environment, regardless of the quality of the tracks.
Can't listen to music in iTunes on my Windows system anymore.
Thanks, Apple. And I was just getting ready to replace my PC's with MACs.
H.
harold:
everything you wrote suggests you SHOULD replace them!
Apple fanboy comments not required:)

I have the bug in iTunes whereby I have to leave the sound volume at 100% or I get static in the left speaker. This "update" didn't change a thing. Still getting audio static when the volume slider is not at 100%.
Hmmm, in their release notes the "and more" part makes me suspicious. I wish I hadn't upgraded from version 6, now all my podcasts start with advertising at the start. Bet they added more advertising with this version. Pretty soon it will be as bad as television and apple will have managed to f#$k themselves over.....
I am still having problems with 7.0.1 (the latest version as of today, 10/14/06. Music still stutters and it is such a resource hog that if I run any other application, things lock up. What a piece of crap! If I knew how to roll back to iTunes 6 while keeping my playlists and settings, I would do it in a second. And the so-called "enhancements" for iTunes 7 are just frivilous nonsense and fluff. Anyone who feels that their life is much better with that stuff has to seriously think about getting a life.
haha, how long before were getting itunesX??? im barley getting by with a 1 GHz running 512 of memory, so coverflow hasnt worked, lets see what happens. (and i hate updating, they take away all the "cool" *cough*hacks*cough* features.
The upgrade on iTunes was not optional on my computer. It would not let me enter any part of iTunes until I downloaded 7.0. I cannot get into the music store, buy songs or anything. It just keeps telling me to download ver. 7. I'VE DOWNLOADED IT ALREADY...SO WHAT'S THE PROBLEM? Why is it still telling me to download 7.0? HELP. God forbid there should be someone to call. Let's waste effort on this snail mail method of communication.
my itunes never crashed with 7.0.0 and now its crashing (or at least freezing when it opens) 50% of the time.
very, very, frustrating...
I think the new iTunes disables blue coconut. Anyone else having problems using this program with the new version of itunes?? Slick move on apple's part.
I've been running with itunes 6 for the last year, and have had no issues. I'm running it on a AMD 64 3400 with 2G RAM and 300 G hard drive. I currently have loaded 100G (!) of just music, and have personalized it by creating my own "genres" for MY music. I've even taken the time to copy album artwork from various websites to accompany ALL my music files. It's taken quite a while, but it's been sweet using itunes like this - it's now MY FULLY FUNCTIONAL JUKEBOX.
I've been hearing quite a few negative comments about the new itunes 7, and have been hesitant to have mine updated when the program prompts me to.
My question is this: Is it really running better than itunes 6, and if so, can you explain what and how you find it to be better?
I've been having a hard time finding a ver.6 available for download, and don't wish to get stuck with ver.7 if it's not "really better"
im really hating this new version. it has crashed on me twice, deleted some files (yeah, i should have backed them up, but i didnt think they would get lost in an update!!), when i have the player on shuffle, the songs stop at the end of their runtime and dont continue with a playlist, songs skip when i run more than two programs at once, and i had to re-import my whole library. i wish i never updated.
i am surprised by the lack of comments from anyone trying to install the update on Vista. IT DOESN'T WORK! iTunes requires VBSCRIPT to be registered, which Vista does not do by default. In order for the update to work, you need a cmd prompt,go into the c:\windows\system32 directory, and do a regsvr32 vbscript.dll at the prompt. Now retry the update and viola'.
i like the new itunes, its great other than the fact that it wont let me drag and drop home movies or movies i download off limewire ne more it acts like its going to but then it doesnt, i need to get this fixed because i have a lot of movies i want on my ipod and no way to get them on, if you have any way to solve this let me no
