Worked perrfectly for me this weekend. Excellent instructions. Be sure you run the latest upgrade from utstar.com (APAC_VZW_20720_200_11000_Ship.exe) then place the CDMA USB Modem Dialer.exe and CDMA USB Modem.inf files on your PC and following the instructions in the related .DOC
I think VZW, either willfully or by simple disorganization, does not have its act together in this matter. I've been told in no uncertain terms that the XV6700, like the Treo 700w, is not supported for use as a modem. I've also heard from 2 Level 3 techs, one gave me his name, saying that this activity is not SUPPORTED but it is PERMITTED. It's all a matter of whether you add a 3rd party application (which is considered skirting the Terms of Service) or whether you use what comes with the product.
In other words, you can't expect to ask VZW for help with this procedure on the 6700 but you won't get "in trouble" (whatever they might do to you is not clear to me) for doing this as you WOULD if you used PDAnet on your Treo 700w.
The 2nd tech told me I don't even need to pay the $15 addition to the $45/mo data fee ("PDA/Smartphone Unlimited $44.99"). FWIW, when arguing with them about why they won't allow a 700w to "tether", I offered to pay them the extra $15 a month but they pointed out that they had no way to bill me for it.
IMPORTANT: I haven't read the ToS myself. This is all as per two techs and no customer support people. I might be "in trouble". I might be told by the Data Police that the Level 3 techs were wrong and I must shut down my "tethering". So, do your own due diligence but use what info I offer here as a starting point.
It sure is silly for VZW to not take the $15 most of us are willing to hand them so that, when added to the PDA Data plan, they get the same $60/mo they'd get if we bought a cardbus EVDO card plan instead. It's almost-free money for them but the 700w, for some reason isn't supported and the info on the 6700 is totally confused even among their own people.
Different topic: I agree in essence with those who say "Why use BT to "tether" when it's slower than most EVDO connections you'll get (I was getting 500 x 125 in ABQ this weekend in the car), But sometimes an easy, quick, connection at a couple-hundred-k is all you need for a simple email check or to look up an address. Beats dragging out the USB cable.
HP's Jon Rubenstein told us that his company wanted to veer in a new direction, and veer it surely did -- the HP Veer 4G will arguably be the smallest fully-functional smartphone on the market when it goes on sale May 15th.
