Oh Hitachi, you too? Joining the ranks now of, well, pretty much anyone wheelin' and dealin' a laptop these days, Hitachi just issued a recall on 16,000 Sony-made lithium-ion batteries shipped mostly to businesses in Japan. So, let's tally it up: if you or your buds are proud owners of a laptop from
Dell,
Apple,
Fujitsu,
Lenovo,
IBM,
Toshiba,
Panasonic (are we missing any?) and now Hitachi, you'd best be checking those lists to if you've got a potential burner on your hands. Oh, and be sure to tell your friends and neighbors of this massive general recall, who knows, you could be a hero.
Acer, HP, you next?

This makes me happy that I own a Sony...
Wow.
What's up with that Sony?
I have 3 laptops: Apple PowerBook, IBM Thinkpad T43 and a Dell Inspiron 4150. Verdict: All 3 batteries recalled! I am actually happy about this as it gives me a new cell to wear out...what would happen if they all exploded at once?
Somebody show Mitch the Twinkie.
(It would be bad.)
It's kinda funny though that the photo for the story is a Sony VAIO.... the only ones that are unaffected by the recalls.
of not, why would Sony use Sony batteries? They know they explode, so they only used them for non-Sony products ^.^
Is Gateway the only name brand notebook manufacturer not affected? I found out from Gateway the other day that they don't use Sony batteries at all. It seems like all the main notebook manufacturers but Gateway are using Sony batteries.
Someone should freakin' sue Sony like they sued those modchip people.
Well HP is also in the mix. I just had a sony pack replaced last month. HP reported around 16k units being recalled. http://bpr.hpordercenter.com/ebpr/landingpage.aspx
funny you should mention it: my roommate's new hp laptop started melting/potentially burning if we hadnt unplugged it and ripped out the battery. i was actually kind of dissappointed that it didnt explode - fireworks are one of my favorite hobbies.
Even though atleast 6 laptops have exploded, I wonder why nobody has been hurt! Is it a mere coincidence or have the conspiracy theorists just found a job?
It's been way more than six, man.
The other manufacturers must have seen this as an opportunity to cripple Sony's reputation, which explains why more brands are making this recall.
Pretty freaky, I'm glad mine hasn't blown up yet...
