Dell getting ready to take over 19-inch widescreen LCD market?
Since Dell is already the number one vendor in the LCD market, and they've wowed more than a few eyes with the gorgeous 3007WFP, why not jump right in the lucrative 19-inch widescreen market and scare away the competition? Apparently the Texas powerhouse appears to be doing just that, as DigiTimes reports that the world's leanest company has sent out requests for quotations from well-grounded panel manufacturers AU Optronics and Chi Mei Optoelectronics. While the 1907FP currently stands as Dell's top-end 19-incher, it's supposedly hoping to grab an even bigger chunk of the profitable sector, as "54.6 percent of the total second-quarter widescreen LCD market" came from folks not quite ready to make the 20-inch leap. While it's likely the company will not stick to a sole supplier should it look to trample all those same-sized alternatives, we'd guess Michael and Co. wouldn't send out RFQs to the world's largest and most prominent 19-inch panel manufacturers on a whim -- but hey, we've seen zanier things fly from Dell's doors.[Via TGDaily]

Is this why Sony is leaving the Flat Panel monitor market? They want to give it to Dell?

Considering the premium Dell adds to their displays, I doubt they will be much of a threat to the 19 inch market. $350 seems to be the cutoff point for most casual buyers, and the only ones who are interested in 20+ are gamers or professionals who need the added real estate, both of which are used to putting down top dollar for products. Same goes for widescreen monitors... the average user has no use for the format unless their pc is used heavily for movie viewing. That being the case, that person is more likely to go 20" + anyway. Now if Dell can release a good 19" for under 300 that can compete with similar offerings from Samsung and NEC I'd be impressed, but throwing in a pair of USB ports isn't enough to open my wallet.

Well there will be more of a use for wide screen monitors and laptops when Vista is released because many people will be tempted to use Windows Sidebar, but they don't want to lose that valuable screen real estate so then what can they do? Get a wider monitor ofcourse.

Now if only we could convince the lazy bastards at Dice to give us a widescreen Battlefield. Battledfield 2142 being 4:3 only is just bonkers.
I got my 2005fpw from dell for $400 with coupons. There have been many instances where the price for the 20" widescreen went down to $350.

Dude, 16:9 display on BF2/2142 means extra view space over those stuck in 4:3 land. Most of us (not me, I'm an angel) though are still stuck using 4:3 and thus more viewable areas for you and I would be considered cheating in the eyes of EA/DICE. Yeah yeah, argue it all you want, that's the reason they gave me when I inquired about it a year ago.

At least on battlefield 2, you can play it widescreen and I do, at 1920x1200. I think my screen is a Sony SDM-P232B. More information here: http://www.tweakguides.com/BF2_7.html

Dell's 2007WFP has been going for somewhere in the neighborhood of $350 after rebate for the longest time. It outshines Apple's 20" cinema display in every detail except response time and is $300 cheaper. I'd say thats a hell of a deal to begin with and now it looks like they could be getting even cheaper. If you've bought an apple cinema display recently - you may be experiencing a bit of buyer's remorse right about now.
