Not only are specialized products with anti-microbial stuff on 'em coming out
left and
right, but some gadgets will protect you even when you didn't know about it. For example, you know that
Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 3200 Laser keyboard and mouse combo that you just dropped $100 on? Well, we just found out today that it packs
AgION's silver-based anti-microbial protection as a hidden feature -- so if you already have one you just scored yourself some awesome protection against germs, microorganisms and also discoloration to boot. Now of course, you could just wash your hands every time you start or stop using your keyboard and mouse, but we all know that geeks are pretty lazy -- so the obvious solution is to just buy one of these keyboards and mice. So, we're totally ditching our bacteria-infested keyboards for this one right this very second, because that whole hand-washing thing is so 20th century.
Motorolla's i870 also has this protection. Can't say it's caused me not to get sick.
This is good. A public mouse has the highest concentration of bacteria of a public item. More so than a public toilet, or a public water fountain. I get ery every time I use my school library's computer.
the world needs germs. The immune system needs germs. This is crazy but a good marketing gimmick to germphobes who are scared the world is out to make them sick. And sure enough, a new product coated in crap will save them.
New model out next year in a different shape. Buy up for the latest germ protection. Zzz
I was waiting for the release of this combo, and I bought it from Fry's Electronics on the day it was released. The AgIon feature isn't exactly hidden. It was (and still is) listed on its product page at Logitech's website. There is also a label, though small, on the front of the package stating that it uses the AgIon technology. True, however, that they don't seem to be marketing this feature as one of the main pros to this product.
So... having this keyboard and mouse combo for the past few weeks, I must say that it still feels pretty clean. I don't know if it's because it's still just a few weeks old, or if the AgIon technology really is working the way they said it does. Gimme a few more months.
I am curerntly writing a business story on anti-microbial technology being used in consumer products. The story is for a journalism class at BU. I would very much like to speak to consumers who know of this trend and people who have used products with anti-mircrobial technology. Please email me as soon as possible. ssadtler@bu.edu
Nothing new...
I became a fan of Engadget because it brought quality articles, but recently its focus has shifted to quantity (and giveaways?)
