NEC busts out "world's highest resolution" LCD
The leapfrog game played by manufacturers wanting to hold that oh-so-coveted "world's largest" claim has spread from megapixels to HDTVs, and now onto resolution. This time around, however, NEC is simply outdoing itself, as its latest 21.3-inch a-Si (amorphous silicon) LCD rocks an astounding 2,800 x 2,100 resolution. The previous "record" holder was NEC's NL256204AM15-01/01A, whose sesquipedalian model number was only trumped by its prodigious 2,560 x 2,048 pixel count. The panel also sports the company's own "super-fine TFT (SA-SFT)" technology, which enables a brightness of 1000 cd/m2 and a 1000:1 contrast ratio. If you're mulling over picking one of these up to really show off that kilowatt-burning quad SLI setup, you should probably know that this uber-fine monitor comes in monochrome only, as its sole purpose (for now) is to examine detailed medical imagery such as digitized X-rays. It's probably for the best, though, as we don't envision these black and white bad boys coming in cheap at any rate.[Via TGDaily]

2,800 x 2,100 resolution on a 21.3 screen?
Get me a 2,800 x 2100 with a 30-inch screen and I'll consider.
Brian @ Oct 17th 2006 10:40PM
As Neiko said, not even close. I saw that IBM display at my university a year ago, and I haven't seen a higher resolution display yet. (Thanks, Neiko! I've been wondering what make/model that display was)

Not just IBM that was already 3840 x 2400 QUXGA - 22.2-inch - 9.2 mega pixel - 204 pixels per inch.
There's also IDTECH and ViewSonic

Actually, if you read the Wikipedia article, the IDTech and ViewSonics are just rebranded IBM monitors, which is why the picture off the IDTech link you provided is the same as the one on the Wikipedia article.

Not to mention this Westinghouse on display at CES that Engadget already reported on! http://ces.engadget.com/2006/01/07/westinghouses-56-inch-4x-1080p-lcd/

Rebranded for the Japanese market eh?
sorry I still didn't read wikipedia article
anyway, a '56" 3840x2160 QuadHDTV display' sounds nice
Charlie @ Oct 17th 2006 11:15PM
The resolution isn't really very impressive - a 1600x1200 color LCD is really a 4800x1200 panel. So there are only a few more pixels on this display.
matt @ Oct 17th 2006 11:26PM
DAG YO! thats freakin crazy!
DrBuzz0 @ Oct 17th 2006 11:48PM
This (see above image) just once again proves my point: the driving force behind any display technology, be it medical, computer, television, portable is always the same: To deliver better, sharper, more acurate pictures of boobies

marty mcfly FTW on "best comment"
BeetMan @ Oct 18th 2006 2:07AM
So is this is considered 2100p then?
Ozi @ Oct 18th 2006 9:47AM
Actually professional grade medical imaging lcds like these are the only lcd screens garantied to
be dead pixel free and image defect free. Problem here is you have time to get old and grey before you can get a good lcd screen like this to come out in color and for general public...
Chris @ Oct 18th 2006 12:31PM
"bust out" is right.
phantomano @ Oct 18th 2006 10:37PM
Only monochrome? Bah! Buy 3, then build 3 DIY projectors like you are in your other article, and put a Red Green or Blue filters in front of each LCD. Then you just split the signal in software to each to only send the right color component. You have the worlds highest resolution DIY rig. Totally sweet for those with both money and time. Consider it my gift.
