Meizu M6 SP gets better for less yuan
When we eyed the Meizu M6 Mini Player earlier this year, it was almost love at first playlist -- it was slick, small, and inexpensive. So you can imagine our joy in informing you that the new Meizu M6 SP will be just like its predecessor, only better and cheaper. The SP model will bring a new Samsung chipset that purportedly offers "advanced DSP functionality" for 150-300 yuan ($19-$38) less than the old version. The M6 SP comes in 1GB, 2GB and 4GB sizes, and will cost between 700 yuan ($88) and 1,300 yuan ($164); hopefully, that'll translate into price cuts for the US markets as well.

What's with the black one having the standard Mac wallpaper?
Berkana @ Oct 21st 2006 5:13AM
As usual, Chinese companies find it easier to steal designs and other creative work rather than developing their own. Even the design screams iPod clone (black/white under clear plastic with a chrome back).

Chinese company?
William @ Oct 21st 2006 2:56AM
Great PRice and Chinese companies aren't always unreliable, people just dont go for their brand name. I know this, cos im in shanghai.
I have to admit, it's lot like an ipod.
pgl @ Oct 21st 2006 4:47AM
I'd get it just to spite the people that call all mp3 players ipod clones just because it has a black or white color scheme.
Jamar @ Oct 21st 2006 9:46AM
So Apple has patented "white under clear plastic"? The DS Lite does it, does that mean that Nintendo stole Apple's design? I think not! This looks NOTHING like an iPod.
niiconn @ Oct 21st 2006 5:26AM
someone know where to get one of these over the internet? thanx.

f apple this player is a billion times better, and just because it has a few similar things to it so fing whati would buy it over a nano, nano is a no no
Berkana @ Oct 21st 2006 7:11PM
Jamar, you're absolutely right. You think not.
Apple didn't patent white/black under clear plastic with chrome backing and gray touch pads; they have *established that look as characteristic of iPods for years*. A company emulating the thin brick with the same elements of style shows a total lack of originality; all they did was the bare minimum to keep from getting sued: they didn't make the touch pad round. They even used the same shade of grey for the touchpads on the black and white! They could have at least done what other companies have done; change the form factor significantly and make the item ergonomic or other colored. Instead, they took all their styling cues from something Apple has been doing for years. Not to mention that, they even ripped the desktop background from the MacOS. How unoriginal can they get?
As for the Nintendo DS, isn't even a digital music player, and has a dramatically different form factor. It has no grey touchpad, and it doesn't even have chrome backing. What kind of desperate comparison is that?
tekdroid @ Oct 21st 2006 10:05AM
the regular M6 had flac support with updated firmware
http://flac.sourceforge.net
I wonder if this one does, too?

Meizu's site is very very slow here, btw.

i am not defending my contry but if you dont trust things from china then you are not trusting anything you have. an ipod may cost the same as this to build, they just to be retailing more expensive.
Jeffrey Klassen @ Oct 21st 2006 11:57AM
I cant believe so few people know about this player. I have had mine for months and I love it. My friends with ipods are slowly switching over to them as there ipod nano's break. Currently the only place selling them still is: http://www.miniplayer.info/
There is a issue with mp3 licensing so you have to flash with new firmware as soon as you get the units. The firmware updates are awesome and come almost monthly with new features and fixes. Some other great informative sites are:
http://meizume.com/
http://en.meizu.com/
I recommend getting your firmware from the forums, because people release mods with better English and skins there.
Jeffrey Klassen @ Oct 21st 2006 11:59AM
Oh and this is far superior build quality then the nano,it is really well built just read some reviews.
jimlewis @ Oct 21st 2006 1:08PM
Can someone tell me whether you can plug this thing into your TV, the way you can with the 5G iPod, or are you restructed to watching it on its own screen?
John Gettler @ Oct 21st 2006 2:40PM
Anyone have any clue as to how someone could take all day to setup this nice marketing photoshoot, and then 'accidentally' set the white player UPSIDE DOWN!! Crazy Chinese!!
Berkana @ Oct 21st 2006 7:11PM
Yes, setting up the photoshoot with the white player upside down is stupid. However, your "Crazy Chinese" remark was inappropriate. It's more likely the case that the photographer wasn't Chinese and couldn't read Chinese, and thus missed the mistake.
Ben Metcalfe @ Oct 21st 2006 11:37PM
A couple of commenters here are bashing Chinese companies and Chinese build qualities compared to Apple iPods...
Try turning your iPod over and see where it's made :)
momojie @ Oct 22nd 2006 12:17AM
where does it look like ipod??
You nuts
shredsled87 @ Oct 22nd 2006 1:08AM
Definitely one of the better looking mp3 players.
