Asus' R2H UMPC: unboxed, fawned over
You know the drill: product prototype hits the tradeshow circuit, gets official with specs, hits for retail, and then the holiest of holies... the unboxing. Yeah, the R2H is just a generation one UMPC we've seen kicking around for like, ever. But when you just unloaded some $1000 for your new gadget, well, as the unboxer at OnlyUMPC puts it... that first impression is still, like, "awesome." We totally, like, understand bro.

Yummy! But i shudder to ask this....whats the battery life? My Vaio TX gives me about 6-8 hours, does this do better? I think not!

Wow, that must me the quickest unboxing ever... hitting retail in Sep, unboxing late Oct. My father's had one for about two months now, it's pretty nice actually...

They are pretty cool, got 9 today for a project at work. I brought one home for testing and it's pretty good. There is one problem; The windows installation loaded with crap and everything starts at boot so it's freaky slow to boot. It is a bit bigger than the samsung and a bit heavier. The GPS is a cool feature (AutoRoute isn't). I would not buy one for personal use, but it's pretty good for what we're using it for.

Who in their right mind would put a celeron M in a UMPC? I guess if there are still people out there willing to pay $1000 for a celeron, more power to ya but me, i got a Core Duo lapto for $600. Shenanigans I say.

This looks like the new Philips Pronto TSU9600 remote control ( http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/15/philips-pronto-tsu9600-gets-official/ ). Only it costs less and has much wider functionality. If there were a program that could truly replicated the functionality of a dedicated remote control, this might be a more justifiable option vs. the new Pronto. But based on the difficulty of getting the tight-integration of a dedicated device into something that runs Windows makes this a longshot.

The last couple of laptops I have seen with Celeron processors were slow and noisy with a tiny fan that tuned on and kept whining continuously just a few minutes after boot.
Let's hope that the "Intel ULV Celeron M Processor 900MHz" got better. On the plus side I could not find mechanical signs of air cooling on the 6 tiny faces pictures that Asus has put on their site.

I would look at this as a really cool GPS unit for the car. at 500 GBP its not much more expensive than the top of the range Garmin units. Can you use the GPS unit with other GPS s/w, such as the Garmin's one? Anyone to comment on the GPS h/w performance?
