Not sure about iPods being designed to fail. My 2nd generation shuffle died after about 10 months - even though I treated it with kid gloves... I didn't arrange the warranty in time to get it replaced...
But my 1st generation shuffle is still going strong - and it's at least a year older! It's handled knocks, drops, splashes, sweat and varied temperatures. I also prefer the way it charges without needing a dock.
