Dell and AMD get together for new Inspiron 1501 laptop
As expected, Dell and AMD are busting out a cheap-as-free 15-incher this month -- and today looks to be the day. The new Inspiron 1501 sports a 15.4-inch WXGA display (presumably 1,280 x 800), and the base model sports a 1.6GHz AMD Sempron 3500+ processor, 512MB of RAM, a 60GB HDD, CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive, ATI Radeon Xpress1150 256MB integrated graphics, a 6-cell lithium ion battery and 802.11g Dell WiFi. Of course, it's the pricetag we're all here for, and Dell doesn't disappoint: the 1501 rocks a $549 starting pricetag. If you want a bit more power, you can spring for the $859 model which sports a Turion 64 processor, 1GB of RAM and other spec bumps, or one of the plentiful configurations in between. Yeah, we're a bit bummed that Dell couldn't quite manage to get one of these under $500, but the Inspiron 1501 still shouldn't disappoint buyers on a budget this holiday season who can't quite afford or have no need for Intel power in their laptop.[Thanks, NateMan99]

This isn't funny.

IF STELLA McCARTNEY WERE TO REWRITE 'YESTERDAY'...

:)
I'm actively in the market for a laptop. Some of us actually read these reviews to get helpful information. My request, which some of the posters in this chain of postings can either honor or not, is to contribute to providing valid feedback about the product, or not post. Those who only make sophomoric "insider" asides would be better served by hopping on My Space or some misbegotten chatroom and having at it.
I for one welcome our new competitively priced, reasonably well-equipped overlords.
That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
You know, sometimes, an 'overlords' joke just doesn't fit.
And that's the entire point of the joke here.
Re: Rohit
How does it not make sense? The laptop is priced at a very competitive price-point with very reasonable specs.
I think Rohit is just upset/aggravated that I made an overlords joke on a posting about a laptop. The point of the joke, obviously, was that it was a fairly silly/ridiculous thing to say. It's called a parody.
Of course, now that I've had to explain it, it's now longer funny (and yes, it WAS funny before it got derailed like this). :P
Gah. Forget it. I'm just sick and tired of reading the same joke over and over again. It's alright if it makes even remote sense, but sometimes (like this one), it's just sad. Maybe it's just me then.
Jordan, the laptop won't ever be an overlord. There's a criteria for the joke that one must fit. At least to make sense.
I'm too tired right now to catch satire, GorgeousGeorge. It's 11:42 pm here in New Delhi and I've still got to stay up for 4 hours (huge soccer game on).
Anyway, I just found it bugging to see an overlord joke in this post. My apologies.
Ugh. You beat me to the punch! At any rate, sorry to have caused distress with my overlords joke, satirical/absurdist though its intent may have been. :)
I for one welcome criticism of the overused overlord joke.
The joke itself was actually a criticism/parody of the fact that the "overlords" joke is so heavily used on this blog.
You know what? Forget it. :\ Lesson learned: nuanced humor + techie audiences don't mix.
lol... It's alright. And yes, my apologies for typing 'satire' where I meant 'parody'. Like I said, sleep deprivation doesn't work for me (had a huge soccer match last night too. Hehehehe...).
glacia00, thank you. Now THAT made me laugh. :-)
And I just bought my e1505! God Dammit!
Note to Sony: When non-garbage laptops like these are cheaper then your PS3, time to get a bit worried?
First off, lighten up. Secondly, Engadget is NOT just a place where you can get gadget info. It has a following of its own and regular commenters. Therefore, don't ever expect every post to have comments focused on only the details of the post. If you're looking for that, Engadget is surely not for you. Although I'll promise this much: you'll get the best info about the products from the posts themselves.
P.S.: The 'overlords' jokes aren't "insider" jokes. If you think they are, then clearly you haven't been to many (or any) tech blogs before.
Off-topic posters of the world, digress!
George > there is a fine line between nuance and being glad one has a day job.
On-topic, these laptops look awesome for a portable Linux box, can't wait to get my hands on one...on second thoughts, maybe I'll just wait 18 months for someone to write drivers ;p
(hmm...wonder if that new robot runs Linux.)
If you want reviews and on-topic comments, BillyE22, then move over to Cnet. Otherwise, shut up.
Let's not forget that the AMD chip is still a very powerful, low power-comsumption chip. The core 2 duo does not blow it out of the water, it edges it out and the amd chip still edges it out, in my opinion, value wise. And when AMD's next gen chip is finally revealed... intel will be running for the hills.
Off Topic: The overlord joke was funny.
On Topic: I'm curious as to how well these compare to a similarly cheap intel laptop.
Does anyone know if AMD Turion MK-36 is better than the Intel Core Duo T2050 (1.60GHz)??
I heard that AMD has some heat problem?? Is it true??
And which you do you guys recommend and why?
I have one of these laptops and I love it. It has an amazing screen. Watching movies on it is awesome. It also has about 3 hours of battery life and a nice WIFI card. You get lots of bang for your buck.
It does get sort of warm after being in use for a few hours, but it isn't unbearable. Hope I was semi-helpful. :)
PS: the overlord joke is amusing
