LG's dual screen, HDTV-equipped refrigerator
LG's upping the LCD equation in its gadget-happy refrigerators once again, with its latest model, the LSC27990TT, sporting dual displays so you won't have to forgo a minute of your compulsive TV viewing to check the weather. The main display is a 15-inch 1,024 x 768 number -- able to connect to a DVD player if you choose -- while its smaller counterpart takes things down to a wee 4-inches for use with LG's "weather and info center." Other non-traditional refrigerating capabilities include an FM radio, recipe bank, calendar, and digital photo album, as well as a "CustomCube" ice maker -- though we're guessing there's probably a strict limit to its customization (meaning we'll have to keep carving out our Engadget "e" ice cubes by hand). While the folks at Electronic House are sayin' that this $3,600 appliance won't be available until next year, it looks like there's plenty of retailers listing it as in stock.

hm.. why not? I would certainly get one with a display if others similar size fridge cost about the same, doubt if i would ever actually watch anything there tho...

Could the kitchen triange (which is like sink, fridge, and oven) now be even requiered to be smaller? So we can watch our cooking shows from the oven?

Hmm lets see... sweet quadcore computer....classic car restoration project...na lets get a fridge with a HDTV and don't forget the "CustomCube" icemaker.

This is not the first fridge with "CustomCube"
As far as my limited research has yielded, the CustomCube ice maker lets you choose from 5 sizes of "crescent shaped" ice cubes, so that you can fit them in any glass or bottled water.

Doesn't "HD" start with 720i/p (1280x720) resolution? If so, I don't think this XGA TV qualifies as an HDTV.

it's a great fridge the ice machine puts out alot and the tv itself isn't half bad as speakers go pretty loud too and you can also hook up an ipod or dvd player w. rca

a model looking remarkably similar to this has been on sale and in stock at best buy for close to a year already, its a pretty cool fridge and was actually relatively popular in the area that my best buy was located in (at least more popular than you might expect for a $3,000+ fridge).

Can I squirt a jpg to the display from my Zune via wifi? What, no support for THX audio? And if it doesn't have at least two HDMI 1.3 ports I can't use it.
Seriously, does this zany stuff remind anyone of March 2000?

It doesn't seem all that crazy to me... a lot of Korean families watch TV through mealtimes (well, probably about the same amount as North America, although in most Asian nations eating on the sofa is a no-no) so why not combine appliances? Keep in mind things are a bit more compact in places like Seoul than they are in the burbs of America, so the extra space gained is probably also welcome.
Personally, I hate having the TV on through meals with the possible exception of the odd "can't miss" sporting event, but I think there's a huge market for this...

This is pretty cool, but I don't think it will fit on my TV stand.
Seriously, my fridge is facing the other side of the kitchen, not my dinner table, etc.. The smaller display for weather... maybe.. but to watch TV or movies on? I don't think so.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH LG
JAN07 - PURCHASED REFRIGERATOR WITH TV.
APR07 - ICEMAKER WILL NOT MAKE ICE.
MAY07 - ICEMAKER REPAIRED AFTER 3 WEEKS.
JUN07 - TV START TO FUZZ – UP.
JUL07 - TV WILL NOT SHOW UNLESS THE DOOR IS OPEN.
13JUL07 - CALLED LG SERVICE DESK.
27AUG07 - AFTER CALLING LG SPENDING UP TO 2 HOURS ON THE PHONE EACH TIME, THE TV STILL DO NOT WORK. IT WILL NOT EVEN COME ON AND NOW THE ICEMAKER/ WATER DISPENSER DON’T WORK.
EACH TIME I CALLED THE LG SERVICE LINE (1-800-243-0000) I’M PROMISE GREAT SERVICE. HOWEVER, WHENEVER I ASKED TO TALK WITH A TEAM LEADER THEY WERE NOT AVAILABLE BUT PROMISED TO CALL ME BACK. NOT ONE TIME HAVE I RECEIVED A CALL BACK. THERE WAS ONE AGENT (MARTHA x7435) WHO ACTUALLY DID KEEP HER WORD AND CALLED BACK. “THANKS MARTHA”.
