We'll be the first to admit that the whole "
smash this object" craze is getting a tad out of hand, but the
latest rendition of demolishing a perfectly functional
PlayStation 3 is just revolting. While we've witnessed Nintendo's
Wii being
cautiously dissected and publicly mangled, a couple of mountain men (and their canine companions) decided to take their newly purchased 60GB PS3 to the woodshed. After rambling about and capturing their mountaineer lifestyle in perfect fashion, they decide to crush the box with a large chunk of timber, only to make matters worse by busting out the ole hacksaw. Further abuse was bestowed care of a gas-powered chainsaw, and for the finale, it was set ablaze to cheers of evil laughter. While the motive here is certainly clear, and the tools used to inflict punishment are indeed respectable, you'd think someone willing to trash $600 (not to mention to
probable near-death experience trying to acquire one) would
actually show the PS3 within the box. But alas, no "real" proof is ever shown, so be sure to peep the YouTube vid after the break and chuckle at this glaring oversight.

Are your sure your not the inbred hick? Btw you spelled douche bag wrong you stupid douche bag.
mitch @ Nov 29th 2006 9:26PM
Dude, that is totally uncalled for. Maybe you felt he wasted your time on this story, but click on his name and view all of the other stories he has brought Engadget. I know that many of them I took the time to read and really enjoyed them, putting out one story you felt was a waste of your time does not constitute firing a guy.
Matt @ Nov 27th 2006 3:34PM
That was awesome!
QUOW @ Nov 27th 2006 3:37PM
Too bad it's an empty box.
Matt @ Nov 27th 2006 3:43PM
how was it empty did u watch the video?
some person @ Nov 27th 2006 5:47PM
that's true, the way the log landed on the box should have did more damage then it did to the box
pyro @ Nov 27th 2006 3:45PM
obviously just the box with something else in it, new even news worthy.
st3v3n @ Nov 27th 2006 3:47PM
empty.
okae @ Nov 27th 2006 3:50PM
some people have too much time on their hands... interesting at the end he said "anyone dumb enough to buy a ps3...." yet he said he bought one to destroy? ..but ya probably a vcr in a ps3 box or something ...eh
Jonathan Keim @ Nov 27th 2006 3:54PM
yep, it just had something else in it. Man, that guys laugh is really annoying
Ron @ Nov 27th 2006 9:10PM
I agree, the camera mans laugh was extremely annoying
Matt #2 @ Nov 27th 2006 3:54PM
Somehow I think that box doesn't have a PS3 in it. Otherwise, why not any shots of it smashed up inside the box, or just smash it up and burn it out the box?
t @ Nov 27th 2006 3:55PM
first off it's fake. the box is empty or has an old dreamcast in it.
secondly, what a couple of tools. if this were for real its so sad that this guy is so into a game system that he has to buy a competitors and trash it just to show his allegiance.
i can play paperboy on my cell phone. thats all i need.
xVariable @ Nov 27th 2006 3:56PM
Stupid, ignorant, barbaric, sub-human hillbillies. Let's take a chainsaw to *them*.
I'm no fan of Sony. This, to me, simply epitomizes the way we've let the barbarian into our CIVILization.
Barbarism and civilization don't mix. The Greeks and Romans knew it. We're finally beginning to realize it, perhaps too late...
Bobby @ Nov 27th 2006 5:09PM
Could you maybe just... uh, tell me how that affected your life? At all? How did it affect our "Civilization"? He bought something, he did whatever he wanted with it.
And erm... how were the Greeks and Romans more "civilized" than us?
I'll tell you one thing-- they probably beheaded ignorant twits like you.
Jeremy @ Dec 4th 2006 10:13PM
I agree with Bobby. Plus, don't get so emotional, it's just a game.
Richard Lai @ Nov 27th 2006 3:57PM
The new version of Brokeback Mountain.
valima @ Nov 27th 2006 4:00PM
Why are these people smashing up these consoles (PS3 and Wii)? There are alot of kids around who would love to have one of these consoles for christmas. So please stop acting like fools!
JRA219psu @ Nov 27th 2006 4:13PM
A pre-order on jan 16 2006 eh??
yea thats a steaming pile of bs
and that laugh
o that laugh
that man should be castrated
that is all
Scabies @ Nov 27th 2006 4:15PM
The chainsaw magically moved through the box like butter... after seeing the difficulty that the sledgehammer had at smashmyps3, I would have to say the density of the system would make it a lot harder to cut. Also, we didnt see any plastic, metal, or silicon bits flying around, and the way he swung it like a frisbee? A tad heavy for that fat queerbate to loft around like he did.. I call BOLLOCKS on this one. That, and the cameraman sounds like a Wild Boyz / Jackass reject.
He probably bought the box on ebay for $1,000 and got pissed at how empty it was.
Porsche 911 @ Nov 27th 2006 4:19PM
YeeeeeeeeeeHawwwwwww!!!!!!!!! Let us go shoot some inbred-redneck mutants. We do not want any dumbass mutants in our country, because this is a civilized country.
Phoenix @ Nov 27th 2006 4:23PM
See anyone that actually believes there was a PS3 in there is missing more screws in their heads then the guys that forged this little show for us. See, we all know from the smashmyps3 deal that if you want to get a real reaction, you must bring it out of the box.
And besides if it actually was in there, which is highly doubtable since they don't let you see what's left after the fire, it is there PS3 and their choice to enjoy it however they want, whether we agree with it or not.
Hammer @ Nov 27th 2006 4:23PM
People like that give fanboys a bad name. Arseholes.
Cool vid, but.
Nick Eddy @ Nov 27th 2006 5:09PM
Sorry, but fanboys give fanboys a bad name.
Matt B @ Nov 27th 2006 4:24PM
ya, like a hillbilly is going to take something with the cost equivalent of 60 cases of shitty beer and destroy it. We are not as dumb as you look.
KineticOnline @ Nov 27th 2006 4:24PM
I seen this video a while ago, its just the box.
xVariable @ Nov 27th 2006 4:25PM
I just had a look at the video... What a degenerate gonzo freak.
The face of the fanboy is finally revealed and, though not pretty, is pretty much what was expected. Remember this video the next time to see comments of this sort in an online forum. Remember the person behind the words...
Alex @ Nov 27th 2006 4:26PM
These are are complete morons. I love their "unbiased" arguments.
"Plus, they're forcing you to buy a high-definition player instead of giving you the option of doing it." Damn you Sony for forcing me to buy a Blu-Ray player for a fraction of the price of other players without my permission. I want the option of having to purchase a separate drive for it.
NitroNeo @ Nov 27th 2006 4:27PM
Being a volunteer firefighter, anything burning with plastic puts out a ton of heavy black smoke...
I believe there would have been more debris from the chainsaw action as well. Tiny bit's of silicone, plastic, etc. flying around there.
It's funniest part would have been those two fools getting injured by using a chainsaw without any eye protection, or having a flash back into that lighter fluid can with a nice flaming ball explosion.
Chris @ Nov 27th 2006 9:03PM
To NitroNeo:
This is completely off-topic, but I wanted to say thanks for being a volunteer firefighter. You're not in my town or anything, but it's a courageous thing to be a firefighter, and I wanted to give my thanks for doing something so selfless.
Tom @ Nov 27th 2006 4:30PM
Nice empty box...next time show the guts after you cut!
TP @ Nov 27th 2006 4:35PM
he need to used that saw on his own head, what an idiot and a waste of money.
Peter @ Nov 27th 2006 4:37PM
I watched the video, and it is an empty box. When it bounces on the ground after they throw it you can tell. Losers
g_stewart @ Nov 27th 2006 5:00PM
Perhaps this is the guy that bought Sony Playstations 3 of them on eBay?
A tool himself.
Thomas @ Nov 27th 2006 5:06PM
Something is in the box most likely a block of wood from their wood pile. I think you can see a wood chip when it is cut with the chain saw. The only reason I would buy a PS3 is for the Blu-ray abilities.
xVariable @ Nov 27th 2006 5:37PM
*Bobby said: Could you maybe just... uh, tell me how that affected your life? At all? How did it affect our "Civilization"? He bought something, he did whatever he wanted with it.*
He certainly has the right, and that's the problem. He took the creative and hard work of countless numbers of people - furthermore, a beutiful thing that simply couldn't exist w/o modern civilization no less (I'd feel the same way if it were anythign else), and destroyed it in malice for no other reason than to provoke anger. I find that personally offensive and an affront to civilized life, something only a savage would do.
*Bobby said: And erm... how were the Greeks and Romans more "civilized" than us?*
In ways that you clearly will never understand, seeing as you appear to be one of those affore-mentioned gonzo savages.
*Bobby said: I'll tell you one thing-- they probably beheaded ignorant twits like you.*
You've got it backwards you clueless little idiot...
Evan @ Nov 27th 2006 5:12PM
If it was real they would have shown the PS3 cut in half but they didnt
Def. fake
thanks for wasting like 3 minutes of my life engadget
Justin @ Nov 27th 2006 5:13PM
Um.. nice try but there was nothing in the box, which explains why you never opened the box to show the smashed PS3. For all I know you probably just took the playsataion out and have it sitting peacfully inside your house, and stuffed the box with some plastic and tried to fool use all! As I like to say close but no cigar I ain't that dumb. Hey but don't get me wrong I hate the PS3 also so maybe prove to me next time that you actually smashed the piece of crap.
Regards--- jgurbisz
plchabot @ Nov 27th 2006 5:15PM
Sony, what have you done to people? I mean, when you invent the camcorder.
Pip @ Nov 27th 2006 5:17PM
The only thing worse than this is people posting unboxing of non-apple hardware.
Taylor Kesler @ Nov 27th 2006 5:35PM
I not only wish to have seen the remnants to believe it was in fact a PS3, but also the face of the cameraman to believe he was in fact of this human race and not some devilish alien from another planet that could with his laugh alone tear down nations equipped with advanced war-fare... How amazingly cruel to have to listen to that...
boolean22 @ Nov 27th 2006 5:38PM
I call BS on this one
GJP303 @ Nov 27th 2006 5:40PM
Why not just donate it to a orphanage or daycare where kids can enjoy it and have a lot of more fun, or longer duration of fun and no one would be offended (ps3 fans).
... @ Nov 28th 2006 10:19AM
becuase there wasn't a ps3 in the box.
Some people just don't get it.
Mike @ Nov 27th 2006 5:54PM
if it were really in there wouldnt black smoke be coming from the box due to the plastic melting?
fake!
Michal G @ Nov 27th 2006 6:02PM
I don't get it. They call anyone who bought a ps3 stupid yet they made a pre-order 11 months ahead, probably camped out for a few days and then bought it full price? LOL
Besides He cut like 3/4 into the box, pretends to struggle all of a sudden then just stops barely at the end so the box doesn't show there is nothing inside. They he burns it.. It would probably explode anyways, gas + the components and fire = badass.
Jason @ Nov 27th 2006 6:11PM
That was pretty pathetic. Couldn't see inside the box. There was no playstation in there. Maybe these dumb asses should go to jail. All you got to do is report them to the EPA. There are a total of 5 Heat pipes inside the PS3 which probably contain some kind of refrigerant or ammonia based product that is harmfull to the environment. Now I'm no tree hugger and I certainly wouldn't buy any gme system for $600 but I would love to see them have to admit it was fake. A little EPA goes a long way LOL!!!
kdmaster @ Nov 27th 2006 6:18PM
if the ps3 weighs anything like a 360 he definatly didnt have it.
it would be way too heavy to throw so high
Brian @ Nov 27th 2006 6:34PM
ya, that box was definitely empty. oh ya, and by the way, console fanboys suck.
dave @ Nov 27th 2006 6:55PM
look im just as big of a 360 fan as these guys claim to be but i would never fuckin chainsaw a system in half that i could sell for almost 3x the price of it retail. especially if i was one of the very few to obtain one, which i would never even try unless i knew of the overwhelming demand for them from an everyday consumer. but yeah if you all are questioning the reality of the video...fake. theres no fuckin way anyone would do that even if they had "extra money" laying around. it's wood in the box.
