Intel's Penryn Core 2 Quad processor "on schedule"
With the rampant delays swarming nearly every aspect of consumer electronics, it's understandable to approach "release dates" with a certain level of skepticism, but Intel's Mark Bohr has stated that the company is already "processing the first samples of the Penryn design," which is good news for Intel fans everywhere. The 45nm, quad-core successor to its Core 2 Extreme QX6700 was previously scheduled to be released "sometime during Q3 2007," and just as Intel nailed their November target on its latest Kentsfield chip, it just might be safe to put a little stock in this date as well. Dubbed the Core 2 Quad, this next generation processor will seek to increase power, consume less energy, and primarily outgun AMD by releasing its 45nm CPUs only months after AMD launches its 65nm Barcelona. Additionally, Penryn could play a role in the part of Montevina, which according to Intel's roadmap, would be the successor to Centrino Pro. Nevertheless, Intel's done a fair job of keeping its promises as of late, so we're banking on them keeping this one as well, which means the first batch of Yorkfield-derived wafers should hit motherboards "in the second half of next year."[Via RegHardware]

Am I the only getting confused by all of the processor names?
stratocast0r @ Nov 29th 2006 7:49PM
"Core 2 Quad" .. did Intel replace all their marketing folks with rocks ?
Pentium, Pentium wherefore art thou ..
Keaton @ Nov 29th 2006 8:26PM
Intel is trying to run AMD out of the market...
They are going to out pace everyone of their competitors...
It is going to be an Intel monopoly...
I'm pissed...
Isn't this illegal?
andy @ Nov 29th 2006 8:59PM
if they've got the better technology, people are probably going to want to purchase the better goods. if companies aren't able to put up good competition, that's lack of ability aka incompetence, which sadly is not yet illegal.
xxdesmus @ Dec 1st 2006 3:40PM
Are you on crack? What are you smoking my friend?
How is Intel working there ass off to get a new product out the door even vaguely illegal? Is it illegal because it will suck to be AMD when they are left in the dust with there "new" 65nm chips?
greg @ Nov 29th 2006 9:42PM
oh boy im just waiting for Intel's Penryn to support ddr3 and mabye a new socket
cant wait to get my hands on one of those!!!!
Brennan @ Nov 29th 2006 9:51PM
lol, AMD is still going to do better, all AMD processors have 2x-almost 3x the amount of BUS speed Intel processors have, makes AMD better for everything.
AMD is better.

I'd like to thank you for being so unbiased.

Where are they getting these names? As far as I am aware Penryn in a small town of around 5000 people in southern Cornwall, UK! Not exactly a place that makes me think of Quad core processors!
Xander @ Nov 30th 2006 4:15AM
I know what you mean, Penryn is a weird name. I live there!
Dallas @ Nov 30th 2006 8:00AM
Seems like quad is the way to go. You get the benefit if 2 cores immediately and then your system only gets faster as software for 4 core gets enabled downstream. I guess I might wait for Intel's next chipset in March 07 or so.
MIKE @ Nov 30th 2006 8:59AM
Keaton, take a reality check.
Why is it suddenly ILLEGAL for someone to be better than someone else?? Is this what our newest generation is made up of?
OR, maybe you should read the second line in YOUR OWN little whiny rant, where you basically, without even knowing it, answered your question:
"They are going to out pace everyone of their competitors..."
And so what the hell is wrong with that? If I outpaced you in a bike race, are you going to say it was illegal of me to do so? Probably. Thats what this generation does today - find every possible excuse to make themselves feel better as to why they didnt/couldnt win. And, reward the losers too because we dont want to injury their psyche!
I notice that you didnt specify exactly who had placed a gun to your head, or anyone else's head, to purchase Intel CPUs....
Feel free, as you are, to purchase whatever it is you want to.

Yummy! I really want to see its benchmark performance soon.
