We're a little hazy on the message Sony's trying to get across with their "Vaio C Series, the non-PC PC" campaign, but make no mistake about it, despite this Apple "I'm a PC, and I'm a Mac" ad spoof, Vaios really truly are PCs. Especially stylish and expensive PCs, yes, but that doesn't make them any less unreliable (and we should know, we've owned more than our fair share of "non-PC PCs"). Anyhow, in their probably-not-meant-to-be-viral flash ad (shown after the break), Vaios are the cute, fun-loving girl to the stodgy and farting PC, and the annoying too cool for school Fonzie wannabe HEY!-ing Mac. Of course, the greatest irony of all here is that the original ad campaign often depicts the PC as a sad, silly Mac imitator. The tables certainly have turned.
Underwriters Labs has been doing this for years. Apple's Magsafe charger is patent-pending because in order to get a patent, you have to be the first one with the idea. The patent originates from 2001, held by Underwriters.
A. Apple did not come up with this idea. This feature was patented in 2001 by Underwriters Labs: http://news.com.com/2061-10793_3-6026430.html B. Apple filed a false patent application, because you can't patent a product that was already invented simply by attaching it to something else. C. An Apple charger is still just a charger. It might have a trendy little logo on it, but it does exactly what every other charger on the market does - charge. The innovative people in this case are the good folks at Underwriters - while it was certainly a good idea to include that feature, they were neither innovative nor the "most advanced".
So next time Apple comes out with something new, do some research to find out who the inventors are.
People who own a mac know how badass macs are. They just work. I've had zero problems so far and I've had my PC freeze up just for me looking at it wrong. PCs are unstable, unpredictable, slow, and boring. And before you talk shit, why don't you get a mac and try it out. Trust me, you won't want to teach anything not made by Apple again.
Slacks, can you back your arguments by objective statistics?
Guessed not. Had you spoken to some IT dept people of companies that run Macs? Word is that objective, rather than wishful, comparisons are not that black or "white"...
All Mac users are discount Jimmy Fallon wannabees.

In what way are macs better than PCs for either music or graphic design/film? Nobody has ever pointed this out. Given the same programs (nobody really uses the i software professionally) and the hardware you can get for a PC with the money you saved.
I call bullshit on Macs being better for anything.
a vaio and many sony products are nice to look at, indeed. but like a dark "upscale" whorehouse and too many $10 congacs later, the hot factor wears off and you still have the same sores, diseases, and viruses in your lap.
Semantics aside, the PC vs. Mac argument _is_ about the OS. Aside from perhaps some *all too regular* engadget readers and the like, nobody really knows or cars the processor type of their computer. It boils down to day-to-day ease of use.
I work on a PC, I have a mac at home. I probably use both equally in similar tasks (graphics, spreadsheets, surfing, email, etc.). The "fact" is that a Mac on OSX is x-times more stable and easier to use. IMHO, better.
I do appreciate how Sony is trying to differentiate themselves through design (I am a designer an like shiny things). But to me (ignorance pleading as I do not have any experience with a Sony hardware product, aside from brief use of a Clio PDA, and some craptastic phones and stereos), I think the Vaio line is like dressing up the town whore in Prada. Its what's inside that counts.
I cant knock Sony directly for proprietary HW/SW (although having to buy MS for the Clio was a bitch). OSX is proprietary. But to me, Sony on the PC front, seems stuck between the compu-crap PC clones and Mac.
If they really wanted to "be different", they could. they have the resources to start a brand new OS. Why not? Its just a different mentallity of Apple vs. Sony and the others that prevent innovation and focus on features, speed, sexy design and other peripheral elements.

I've owned one of these so-called "cute" Sony laptops... and everything I know and liked about the Sony brand went right out the window. It looked great, but I've never had such a poor piece of computer equipment. Practically everything broke, one after the other between 12 and 18 months. First it was the screen, then the CDR drive, then the ram went bad and finally the power adapter. I eventually had to scrap it because the power adapter could no longer power the machine! To replace the plug, I had to replace the entire motherboard.
I've had other PC notebooks since that perform much better than this VAIO. As nice as they look I'll never buy or recommend another VAIO. At work I have an Intel MacBook Pro and it is by far the best built notebook I've ever had.
While we are at it, can anyone explain why, if OSX is so superior to Windows, Apple does not sell OSX to run on PC, after all it shud be possible technically easily now with same processors etc?
Every time I hear someone say Macs are overpriced I want to scream!
Mr Hammerstein, how long does it take you to figure out that they are priced according to speed and processor quality? Just try visiting the Dell website and customizing a laptop to have the same specks as the MacBook and you'll see what I mean. And yes, I have tried it so don't give me any of that "you are ignorant and have no idea what you are talking about" feedback.
I'm sure Apple wasn't the first to think about a device like the magsafe because complaining about problems with the cord pulling out and damaging the computer is no novelty, and you don't have to study in harvard to come up with a device made of a magnet and connectors. However, the first adapter with a "safe pullout cord" I saw hitting the market was from Apple. In addition, it has two plastic parts that will unclip and allow to roll the cable on them. Of course the Apple charger is a charger and not a coffee-maker, but those little devices Apple adds and that one may consider insignificant are very important to other people, mostly non-geek users. My Inspiron charger doesn't have a "magsafe" nor a device to easily store my cable.
You are seriously a moron. If you install a new Maxtor HD in your Dell and the HD fails, would you call Maxtor, or would you call Dell? Apparently you would call Dell ... dumbass.
Directly from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission... FOUR other companies with battery recalls due to Sony batteries: Fujitsu, Gateway, Sony, and Toshiba.
don't think you read the text there "jim". Read the part where it says this: "There have been no incidents involving batteries sold by the notebook manufacturers participating in this announcement."
Via is still a PC, and still runs Windows which means it's no better than any other PC out there. It is still as vulnerable to viruses and spyware like all the rest. So while they can play on the edge of copyright infringment, they are just as crappy as all the other PC's out there. Because it's the OS stupid that really makes the Mac different and better.
Strange, I wrote much more but my comments we simply cut off after not even my sentence.. Anyway, to keep it simple, it was about the Processors and OSs, not just one or the other.
LOL, I would call Dell if the laptop were to send too much electricity too the HD and cause it to fail. Of course, you are a genius and blame Maxtor for having specifications for the operation of the HD that Dell or Apple doesn't follow. Also, no Sony laptop explosions due to battery. There was one case, and the cause of it is unknown. Anyone else with some smart ideas?
Hahahaha. It's funny. btw it's not really that prominent on their site and beside that site is on au subdomain so it's obviously not intended for american audience.
While the internals of a Vaio are the same as any other Windows machine, it is indeed the design elements that seperate some of the Viao series from the other manufacturers.
I wouldn't go to a whorehouse looking for the 70 year old hooker with a heart of gold. Neither would I go to a whorehouse for the nicer looking 30yr old hooker who doesn't do all the things I want. I'm not paying a premium for the missionary position and a Cirque style juggling show.
After close to two years of looking the SZ series Vaio was the whore for me. Cosmetically the most appealing, light at 4lbs, and enough man made talent to play all the games I enjoy.
For better or worse I've grown accustomed to dealing with any of the long term shortcomings of a relationship of this nature.

this is a serious, not confrontational question.
so vaio's are "Especially stylish and expensive PCs"?
funny, i thought that's what Macs have become...

everyone here seems to be preoccupied with the whole mac vs pc debate. but isn't that missing the point here?
