We've been pretty lenient with
Wiimote disaster pictures so far -- we're looking at you,
Tyler -- since they're just so dang funny. But now Mr. Mmcheacher had to go and ruin it for everyone by faking a disaster of his own, and expecting people to fork over PayPal dollars to buy him a brand new laptop. Mmcheacher put up a cute little blog with that picture up above, along with a sad story of Wiimote strap-breaking woe, hoping to win some pity dollars with that "cracked LCD" of his, him being a student and all. Next, (for those potential pranksters out there taking notes), Mmcheacher tipped us about the blog, and had a friend tip us 16 minutes later, completing this marvelous deception. Unfortunately for him, that screensaver he's using has been
around the internet a time or two, and he's not fooling anyone. Sorry to ruin the party, Mmcheacher -- if that's even your
real name -- but perhaps you can try a little harder next time around?
UPDATE: Sorry to ruin the fun, but after this post went up, the aforementioned Mmcheacher (whose real name is Michael Parker McEachern, we've discovered) swapped his tale of woe for a NSFW page of hate, so we pulled the link. Now you'll just have to use your imagination. Or you can email him at mmceachern@gmail.com or michaelparker@gmail.com -- maybe he'll send you a screencap.
pwned by engadget!
DEAR RICK I AM THE SON OF A POWER FUL DESPOSED LEADER IN NIGERIA I HAVE A BILLION DOLLARS THAT I NEED TO DEPOSIT SOMEWHERE FOR SAFEKEEPING PLEASE SEND ME YOUR BANK ACCOUNT INFORMATION, PASSPORT, CREDIT CARDS, WALLET, AND DOG. PLEASE YOU WILL BE REWARED FOR YOUR HELP
Aw man, I want to see the NSFW page.
Rick, I visited your donation page. Bad news buddy; it seems you're a confirmed, certified and fully documented low-life. Sorry man, someone had to tell you and your friends and family asked me to do it.
The good news is that after two weeks, Beggin' Rick has only accumulated $6.34 (and I think his mom gave him $5 to promise to keep his room tidy). You could make more money selling pencils all-the-while keeping your dignity and self-respect. But maybe that's not worth a cool new Wii (or even $6.34).
I'm still trying to figure out why the Kim family would need money.
He was a high-profile editor and owned several businesses. It seems they are soon to be healthy, and they presumably have insurance and relatives. There are a lot of other people out there in need of help who have none of these things. I do feel for them and regret their loss, but they hardly seem destitute.
Am I missing some important detail here?

I think you are completely missing the point. When a family loses its primary provider they have to start thinking long term about how they'll provide for the families expenses. In the immediate there will be expenses related to their search and rescue and in the future there will be college.
Many people touched by this tragedy want to help the family in some way, and for many donating money is a good way to show support. It's not about how wealthy the Kim family is (they're not asking for or directly accepting any donations right now), it's about how much people -want- to show their support.
Thanks~
"Many people touched by this tragedy want to help the family in some way, and for many donating money is a good way to show support."
Ummm no. Not unless it is a situation that can be solved with money. Otherwise the money is better directed to the Red Cross, a battered woman's shelter, meals-on-wheels, services for the low-income elderly etc in the name of the person(s) that inspired the donation.
Looks like I will have to ask: Just what is "NSFW"?
It's people like Rick that make me continue my quest for an invention that allows me to punch anyone on the internet, right through my computer monitor. I am taking donations to fund my research, email me if you're interested.
Spaceboy you must live in space if you think what you wear will get you a job or not maybe in some type of fashion industry but most jobs require people to have skills which is probably why he is in a more expensive college than you went to (probably community college)and hence pretty broke. he could have two jobs and go to college but if school and dorm is 25k a year well then hes gonna be pretty broke.
Hey Michael Parker, Shove yourself... and your laptop... UP YOUR ASS!!!!! hahahahaha
Loser!

Engadget, you need to surf the web more. I've seen that broken screen wallpaper posted over ten times in /hr on 4chan... clearly not a broken screen.
I know because about 1/2 year ago I spent about 6hrs trying to clean up the tons of JPEG artifacts in the wallpaper.
Um, David, perhaps you need to read a bit more before posting. You did an excellent job of making yourself look experienced and learned by being able to recognize it as being a wallpaper, but sadly, this was negated by the fact that engadget's whole point in this article was pointing out the fact that he was faking the damage to his laptop, which you apparently missed completely.
@ imsoclever
If you have so much money, why don't you use some of it to combat AIDS instead of sniping back and forth at each other about getting money for a Wii? But hey, that may just be me.
@pwcsquared
dude, this is your first time on a computer isn't it? It's ok... keep going, you'll get the hang of it eventually... we won't laugh....I promise...
Actually, I have been on the computer for years enough to consider myself adequate. I just fail to see the humor in maintaining a pathetic a joke that is three pages old and still labelling it as funny. I am trying not to laugh myself.
@David Li
You do realise Engadget know the screensaver is over the net right??
Read the article properly. See?? It's above where it says Update: in bold.

After being flooded by you morons for the past few days someone finally gave me the link and I read about this computer fraud thing. My name is michael parker and that is my facebook page you have linked too, however, as suprising as it my be in a world of over 6 billion people, there just might, just might be more then one god damn michael parker in this world. I am not the mmeacher person, I didn't think I'd have to take the time to clarify this, but getting ridiculus amounts of flood through facebook retards who clearly are oblivious to the fact that there are more then one "michael parker's" So do me a favor and stop sending my garbage through the facebook.
haha
