Pioneer unveils DVR-A12J 10x dual-layer DVD burner
Similar to the height / width race that's always going on in the land of HDTV, the write speed race is also one that never seems to cease. While you can toast a blank DVD at 20x, the dual-layer variety demands a bit more patience, but thanks to Pioneer's latest, the waiting game is getting ever shorter. The DVR-A12J lineup comes in piano black, silver, and white color schemes, claims Windows XP compatibility, and offers up 10x write speeds on dual-layer DVD+/-R media. Additionally, it touts Labelflash technology (similar to LightScribe), writes to single-layer DVD media at 18x, and takes care of DVD-RAM at 12x. Moreover, it boasts a 2MB cache and a rather stout Cyberlink software bundle, including PowerDVD6, PowerProducer, and Power2Go. So if you're still holding out on those pricey (and sluggish) Blu-ray burners, you can snap this sucka up for just ¥10,000 ($86) later this month.

DVD+R 8.5gb media is actually called "Double Layer."
A DVR-112 with the appropriate forced firmware upgrade should be enough (and for half the price.)

I just bought a boxed LiteOn Lightscribe DVD+-RW that does 8X DVD+R DL for $35. These things are so cheap and so fast these days does it really matter if it's a little bit faster?
And I know Lightscribe it's that popular (which is kinda too bad), but I've never even heard of Labelflash.

I would rather they increase the speed of the media. I can't find any that writes above 2.4 without spending an arm and a leg.
Oh and o rly since Pioneer invented DVD-R it's common to see in the sales descriptions Duel layer. I guess they could have printed Double-layer DVD+R/ Duel-layer DVD-R media, but since most people don't know and don't care about the difference why make the distinction.

Exactly. Right now, it's still not cheap enough to burn at 2.4X DL. And to be able to burn at 10X DL with the right media, it's just not worth it. The media hasn't caught up with the technology unlike DVD+-R.

Pretty good deal if you ask me.
