Samsung's (not quite) "Full HD" 22-inch LCD TV: FTW?
Ok, here's a strange one: Samsung floated an LCD television in Korea this morning which they claim is "Full HD" -- in other words, 1080p with a resolution of at least 1920x1080, right? No, in fact, their new CX225MD rig is being reported as having the same 1680x1050 resolution and specs as their 22-inch LCD monitor only dressed-up in a slathering of gloss, under panel speaker, and television tuner. Judging by how all the glamour shots have the rig snuggled up with an Xbox 360, we're guessing this set is targeting gamers so we'll likely find component inputs, HDMI, and HDCP-enabled DVI as found in their CX223B monitor this is based on. But if you're looking for the ultimate convergence panel for your gaming/PC needs first, occasional up-close hi-def TV/movie watching second, then check the new Sharp AQUOS LC-32GS (if you can afford it) which packs a full 1080p, 32-inch display. Otherwise, feel free to rid yourself of the 690,000KRW (about $745) required to take this baby home. Sammy won't mind.

What an odd resolution.

I believe 1680x1050 is SXGA. My 15" ASUS notebook has the same resolution.

Is it really that much different than 42" plasmas that are 1024x768 being called 720p?

Actually 720p is 1280x720. So the 1024x768 aren't 720p in regards to the horiz but pass it in the vert. But they are "close enough" to be called 720p.

hah that's interesting. i'm already running that setup with the Westinghouse 22" LCD from Best Buy on Black Friday. it also has component, s-video, composite, and dvi connections. it's 1680x1050 native, hooked up a 360 through vga at 1920x1080 and it looks absolutely gorgeous. only downside is that i had to adjust it and now i'm missing 5% of viewing area from each side due to aspect ratio differences.

There's a monitor in that photo?
Tomppa @ Dec 14th 2006 12:41PM
Seriously, is that a 22" monitor there? Looks bigger
JK @ Dec 14th 2006 12:58PM
Don't compare its size to the girl, she is tiny :P Compare with the big fat 360
Blindelf @ Dec 14th 2006 12:58PM

Compare the monitor to the 360 in the pic, not the girl. She's tiny. And hot. 22" widescreen monitors seem huge compared to 19" ones...

Off topic, but what's with all the "l33t speak" around here lately? First it was using "dropped" for new products and now you're using "FTW" too? If bloggers want to be taken seriously as journalists they need to start writing like them.
Okay, rant over.

I'm gonna have to call "shenanigans" on that photo. Everyone knows there are no Xbox 360s in Asia. ;-)
pcbuilderchris @ Dec 14th 2006 6:14PM
galley i was thinking the same thing but hey they know deep down inside ps3 and its ability to run linux sux thats why they have a 360 to later run homebrew with xna and really run linux with graphics chip access
David G @ Dec 14th 2006 9:13PM
I'm enjoying this at 1280 x 800 on my macbook, I didn't realise I was browsing in HD!

Looks like she needs a playing partner if you know what I mean.

If you think females in asia are all hot, you definitely got to get out more.
