The last we saw or heard about a
UMPC from Medion was way back in September when
a grainy image of such a device was leaked at IFA. Turns out that the grainy image was real, as Bill Gates recently demonstrated a UMPC device from Medion at his CES keynote in order to tout a new version of Microsoft's Origami Experience user interface. In a move sure to please readers interested in the impressive specs list of the MD RIM 1000 -- 6.5-inch touchscreen, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, onboard GPS, DVB-T tuner and webcam -- Medion's first UMPC is to be made available on Jan 30, which happens to be the same date that Microsoft plans to release this
other piece of software you may or may not have heard about.

Well with that tuner I guess this is meant for the European market + possibly Japan. Too bad, I like the features, what OS is it running though? I hadn't heard of a mobile version of Vista.

So... is it available today?

OK, here's the inside scoop. There will be 100 units available for pre sales. Medion began creating a contact list over the last few days for the pre sale. The units have not arrived in the US as of today, but once the units are received, they will begin contacting people on this list to process their payment(Credit card only). $999USD is the confirmed cost. According to the update i received earlier today, less than 20 people have been added to their callback list. No word on when more will be made available or which vender they will be made available through.

This particular device doesn't have an inbuilt gps. I checked with their customer rep. They said 'later versions may have it'.

Just got off the phone with a Medion Rep. to confirm that the UMPC was actually shipping tomorrow as planned and apparently they won't be shipping till April 7nd. They told me I'm 2nd on the order list for the new UMPC and that the delay is due to microsoft's origami software shipping late to Medion.
