Hands-on with the Portege R400 and UWB port replicator
The Toshiba Portege R400 is hot enough on its own, right? Well, what if we told you that Tosh is showing off a prototype version of their Vista SideShow friendly, convertible tablet with an Ultra Wide Band (UWB) wireless dock? Damn straight son, wireless transmission to all your peripherals so you never have to plug your DVI monitor, Ethernet, keyboard, mouse, and other USB peripherals into the laptop when you return to the home or office. Just take a seat and you're in -- simple like pie. The Toshiba Wireless Port Replicator (as it's officially dubbed) will be available in the second quarter of 2007. Check the gallery for a few more pics.

I won the Portege R400 in the promotional prize draw but what I want to know is has anyone figured out how to run it with linux? I think I might have to get me one of those port replicators though.
uhhhhhh.............wher's the firewire and e-sata ports. give me those and I'll go out today and buy it. Ohh and I need a pcmcia uwb card to put into my laptop.
Unless you are my dad, which you are not, dont call your readers "son" it sounds unprofessional and makes this site seem cheesy. Other than that keep up the good work. And dont say "son" unless your son is reading this.
Actually, this site is cheesy and unprofessional. No offense.
Portege ? never heard of that....Protege , yes.
Actually, it is called the Portege - that is how Toshiba looks at it. Not everything has to be a real word - look at "Qosmio".
And as for the "son" remark - I say keep it up. Engadget's writers have a style that is unique - they know their stuff but they keep it easy to follow along to with well-placed slang here and there for the layman to follow alongh to. Good stuff!
Some people need to chillax. I actually enjoyed reading that story.
This badboy starts at 2600 bones. Who the crap is going to be buying it? I think it looks sweet, the specs are killer and the size is a thing a beauty. But 2600 bucks? Thats a lot of cash to drop on a laptop. If they could get this thing in the 1800 range, then I'll be listening. Until then, this is a rich-folk thing.
And by 'this thing' I mean the R400, not the UWB port replicator. Lord knows how much that's going to cost as an add-on.
I think I read someone else's comment a while back on using non-real words to name products...something about being able to copyright or trademark it better. I don't remember the details exactly but I think portege is a fitting name seeing that it is a port replicator.
I take that back about the appropriate name, I just realized that portege is the name of the laptop.
Very cool technology.
@Wen
If you're looking for "professional" writing, maybe you should get off the internet.
RE: Wen and "damn straight son", well it wouldn't be the engadget we all know and love without such smile inducing usage of sentence structuring and "informal" word spellings. No merely another boring tech site, lol.
Portege is the name of Toshiba's ultraportable line of laptops. The name is a play on words on "portable" and "protege".

Although the dock is not there, maybe it is coming later to Europe.
