Kingmax busts out world's first 4GB microSDHC card
4GB in an miniSDHC card? We scoff at the audacious bulk of such a memory device! See, only microSD can cut it anymore around the Engadget HQ, now that Kingmax has squeezed 4GB of flash memory into a microSDHC card -- champions of lesser memory formats will be shot on sight. Plus it's not just the capacity getting boost, performance has hit new highs as well, with 22.5MBps dual channel read speeds (150x) and normal read speeds of 19.1MBps (127x). That means the card can pull off SD 2.0 speeds in your digicam, while still making for a real kicker of a memory expansion for your phone or media player. Don't bother with looking for a price or availability date, we just pre-ordered the entire first run.

Kingmax memory may be OK, but their warranty is junk. They make you jump through a bunch of hoops to just get a RMA, then you have to prepay shipping back to you by UPS or FedEx, in addition to the shipping of the memory to Kingmax. Really tacky service.
I jumped on board the "Holy shniznozz, flash memory will be the wave of the future" train a long time ago. I had no idea how compact/affordable the technology really had become until I received my new RAZR V3T last night. Say what you will of the phone, I've owned 4 RAZR phones with great luck. I opened the packaging only to find this minuscule chip that was smaller than pills I swallow in the morning. Albeit it only touted 128mb, but I remember when 128mb of RAM was the new hotness. Either way, 4 gig on this little chip, when will we stop having to use hard drives?
4GB MicroSDHC is good news, albeit inevitable. I suppose that since it's now SDHC, 32GB cards will appear in the near future.
What is much needed news is what devices are going to support MicroSDHC?
Specifically, will the Nokia N95 be able to take these?
Would current devices using regular microSD be able to use this? i.e. the BlackBerry Pearl?
Yes.
Uhh, no. That guy just totally lied to you. It's MicroSDHC. The -HC stands for high compacity, as in a different architecture size.
Wow, i forsee a 30GB half size ipod nano.
So what's the official cap on "standard" SD types, 2GB,4GB?
I know the standard 2GB Micro SD cards are getting more available but is 2GB or 4GB the absolute limit for them?
Will this work in a SanDisk Sansa?
It will if you use Rockbox
April 1st.
This is going in my Sandisk Express USB drive thing.
Only devices that support microSDHC can use cards like this. I suspect most existing devices will not support it without at least a firmware upgrade. If a device doesn't specifically say it can use HC cards, then don't assume it can.
With this, WM devices can now match one of the iPhones' capacities.
But of course, since this is an HC version, this thing probably won't work in anything right now with a microSD slot.
So that's the question: What current devices will accept this card?
