Divineo offers up LCD-infused Xbox 360, practicality in doubt
No, we don't think this Xbox 360 case mod oddity takes the cake, but it ranks fairly high up there in the long list of mods that are impressive from a technical standpoint, but next to useless from a practicality stance. While we're sure just about anyone could find a plethora of utility in Ben Heck's LCD-equipped Xbox 360, the latest offering from Divineo (the same company which Sony loathes) slaps a 5.8-inch widescreen LCD onto the side of Microsoft's console, which actually enables gameplay right on the side of your machine. Of course, with such a wee screen, all hopes of multi-player battles are next to hopeless, and even single-player action just might put an unhealthy strain on your retinas. Nevertheless, the mod-happy firm is offering it up to anyone interested, and while we doubt these folks are actually selling US units, you can hit the read link for all the foreign details if you're so inclined. For those fairly confident that you won't be taking Divineo up on this questionably useful mod, you should still click on through for a live action video of this thing rocking out, but be very sure that you adore Metallica first, and don't say we didn't warn you.[Via Xbox 360 Fanboy]

That's pretty cool.
And it's not unlike the portable video screen for the PS One
vladimir356 @ Feb 4th 2007 10:08PM
don't you hate those latukata comments in youtube? whos with? oh... and i think first post!
mike @ Feb 4th 2007 10:08PM
Thats awesome
tyler @ Feb 4th 2007 10:08PM
dude...thats sweet, does anyone know if it also has the video out? cause i wouldnt want to be stuck playing on the small screen
fs454 @ Feb 4th 2007 10:32PM
Why was the bottom portion of the screen non-functioning once the game started?
LiQuiD_FuSioN @ Feb 4th 2007 10:59PM
Okay.. that's "pretty sweet", "really awesome", and looks "cool"..
..but seriously, what is the point of this? Practicality, INDEED!
This is borderline ridiculous. To a technical stand-point: Impressive.
Adding to that, I'd have to say that this is also pretty damn redundant and utterly useless. Hear me a moment - this is almost like the "Wii Laptop" http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/19/the-wii-laptop/
On the Wii Laptop: Who the hell is gonna play a game on a 7-inch screen for cryin' out loud?!
I won't knock on the creators because the guy who made the "Xbox 360 Laptop" did a marvelous job; in other words, you could actually play on it without the worries of eye strain.
I just find these spin off creations quite humourous to say the least. ;)

Only make sense if they use this as a Sideshow360....
Zach @ Feb 4th 2007 11:27PM
Don't try Dead Rising on it.

Well it could be useful if you for some reason take your box with you and want to plug it into some speakers simply for audio streaming.
I think it's really cool, I wouldn't ever need it, but I'm sure it would be useful to someone.

I wonder how long it will be before that LCD fails because of the heat...
... @ Feb 5th 2007 12:38AM
Someone should put in a nice 19" widescreen (or whatever is the biggest that will fit on the side), and THEN it would rock. I believe that the thinnest part is right above the dvd drive, and considering that they fit the lcd there it should be possible to put in a bigger one... The problem would be finding a screen thin enough... But then again the screen I pulled out of my laptop (14" 4:3 screen) was only ~5mm thick, so it should be possible... Although finding room for the driver electronics/power supply to the screen could be really tricky.
adobochicken @ Feb 5th 2007 1:12AM
try playing dead rising on that
mastershake916 @ Feb 5th 2007 1:49AM
This is crazy.
Engadget is starting to post lots of hacks, but almost every time, unless it's ben heck that is, you point out the weak points of it and say "Oh yeah cool, but here are the 5 reasons that it sucks".
riggs @ Feb 5th 2007 4:35AM
this makes as much sense as a paraplegic with dirty sneakers.
Syphon Filter @ Feb 5th 2007 5:00AM
Hrm, a 360 with a sideshow screen might make sense.
Pratical for games: NO
But it definitely would have its applications. As people have stated for media purposes etc...
FrankTheCrank @ Feb 5th 2007 9:01AM
BORED ALREADY??
People are so bored with their 360 experience, they spend all kinds of time modding the friggin thing.
IDIOTS!!

Nobody has mentioned that Divineo is actually a disreputable company!

My experience is very close to those of "Very Dissatisfied" reviews. The "very satisfied" ones either just got lucky or it's the company's people.

Practicality = making settings changes, purchasing stuff, downloading stuff, previewing content....all without having to change the channel on your tv to the AV input.
Deathwish238 @ Feb 5th 2007 7:29PM
I've actually wished my 360 had a tiny LCD in it before. It's as practical as having a pre-processor with an LCD built in(I have seen this before). Sometimes I want to use my 360 to play music and don't want to have to rack up unnecessary hours on my pj's bulb. So having an LCD built in would be nice. Of course I could just get an alternate display for when I don't want to use my pj...but I don't have enough room to fit something like that
