OQO Model 02 comes in a VZW flavor, too
Good news to UMPC-lovin' Verizon users in the house, OQO's Model 02 is heading your way. We already knew it was sporting Sprint EV-DO when we saw the cute little slider at CES, and it's not like there's much of a swap involved, but we're sure plenty of VZW users will be pleased to learn that they don't need to jump ship to get wireless data on this thing. However, as nice as the addition of Verizon might be, along with that announcement last week of a Vista edition of 02, what we really want OQO to start working on is shipping these things out the door -- 6-8 weeks seems like such an eternity.

Ordered one and then canceled it. Too much. I am going to wait and see if anything comes out of Flipstart...in the meantime, my P1510D is still in perfect working order...

This is just stupid. There's no reason I should have to get rid of my $2000 PC just because I want to change my phone network. They should have made it unlocked HSDPA that way you can change carriers easily by swapping the SIM card.
Bryan @ Feb 5th 2007 8:51PM
HSDPA is currently only working on Cingular (The new At&T, Your World, Delivered, To the NSA). T-Mobile bought spectrum to deliver it but it is on a different frequency than everyone else so it won't really transfer between networks. EVDO has the largest coverage area in the USA. The only real gripe here is that it is not Revision A EVDO and just the regular stuff.

can you take vista off and run win 2000
CK @ Feb 6th 2007 1:29PM
ships with XP or Vista
LukeA @ Feb 5th 2007 9:45PM
Can you uninstall Vista and install Ubuntu?
mitch @ Feb 6th 2007 2:14PM
It's theoretically possible. Also, some guy put Ubuntu on his OQO Model 01+, not sure where I read that though.

what's it for

I had the OQO Model 01+ and even though the thing ran hot and was slow, for the fact that you could slip it into a pocket and carry it around with you and have basically the functionality of a PC. Think UMPC that does not stink, and with the doc cable it makes this pretty much a functional work PC as well. I carried my through airport security pretty much like a PDA. You can run just about anything on it that works with the processor family in the OQO, most flavors of Linux will work with it as well but the power management may not work. In the end, it may not be very powerful but it is about the best UMPC I have seen and used so far.

My problem with OQO right now is these three items:
1) They are expensive to the point where a 12" laptop is better value
2) The VIA processor compared to a single core intel is piss slow and the integrated VIA GPU is very much lacking and the 6 hr battery is not standard.
3) Sending questions to their various "contact" addresses just returns form emails that say -- see our site.
The uber cost and lack of any customer service is sure to doom them!
Call me silly, but built in Sirf III GPS would be a better idea than Wide Area WiFi options which are still far too expensive unless you have a business or someone else footing the bill for the 60+/month data plans.

bah to costly, get a thin laptop for pete sakes!

Err, we're not all from the USA, I'm guessing VZW has something to do with Verizon but could you actually define an acronym first before using it!
saboola @ Feb 6th 2007 10:34AM
From the FIRST SENTENCE of the post:
"Good news to UMPC-lovin' Verizon users in the house"
Is reading that difficult?
PeteC @ Feb 6th 2007 11:38AM
Err, well done, you still didn't say what VZW actually stands for, thanks very much for your useful reply. I can read the fact that Verizon is in the article but that doesn't make VZW any more understandable. Verizon Wireless? I should have googled it I know but cheers for taking the time to be lippy and non-helpful.

I cannot believe that they did not incorporate a Revision A modem in there. Everything else looks tight. For me, this is kind-of a deal-breaker. It is the same feeling I got after I realized that the Oqo model 1 only had a 1.1 USB. Anyway, I thought I would pose the question to OQO tech support to see if there were plans to get with the times. Here is the response to the revision 0 modem question.
"The WWAN EVDO options incorporate a revision 0 modem. This modem is not upgradeable after purchase. Unfortunately, we do not have information on future releases."
