Planex's 750GB+ NAS server and BitTorrent client: make a label hate you
Planex loves 'em some BitTorrent so they're bringing us another network attached storage device with that copyright stompin' preload. The NAS-01G can be configured with up to 750GB of hot Seagate 'cuda 7200.10 disk (model NAS-01G750) or shipped as a shell for you to slot in any 3.5-inch SATA spinner of your choosing. Need more? Then go ahead and sling a few more disks off the 2x USB 2.0 jacks -- Planex won't mind, their NAS unit packs gigabit Ethernet to push that data around the home network on the quick. But make no mistake boy, it'll churn through torrents just fine without the need for your power-hungry PC or Mac soaking up the amperage all night. Save the environment and piss off a major label... good times. The NAS-01G750 is on sale now in Japan (with optional English firmware) for ¥82,000 or about $675.

All these NAS really makes me want to finish mine and make it nice like that.
1 disk is just not enough though. I have 4 250 GB in a RAID 5, but am all out of space in my current computer case. I just wish there was a cost effective solution that I could buy and slap drives in it, like a HDD array case.
I have even been tosing around the idea of buying SATA to USB 2 devices, since I wouldn't need the speed for a HDD array and it could be easier and cheaper to connect (compared to eSATA).
Wait, I don't get it. You say it'll churn through torrents without the need for your PC. Are you saying this box somehow has bit torrent client installed in it already? No right? Don't you still need your computer for the bit torrent client? :s
Woot! Way to go.

Mark: Yes it has a BT client in it. Web based. I think it runs Linux or something. You can get these at Fry's as we speak - the shells are around $60.00.
In this scenario, I think BitTorrent is just being used for marketing spin. By design, all NAS do not need a Mac/PC running to function, and I'd bet this thing does not have a BitTorrent client running.
Kinda like the 'HDTV' antennas. As if they were any different in form/function from any other TV antenna.
not new - some Synology units also have Torrent client built-in, obviating need for a pc/Mac running.
Dont think Synology units have Gigabit ethernet though....
Can it run Slimserver?
Uh, yes it does have a bittorrent client. Do a little research guys before you comment.
I have a Synology d106e which has a built-in BitTorrent client. Which means you sent the NAS a .torrent file and then it downloads the BitTorrent for you, hence the feature called Built-in BitTorrent Client.
Then there's the QNAP which does the same thing.
Now this one.
They're real. They DO exist. They're coming outta the woodwork.
I'm with infinityPlusOne. External BitTorrent clients have been available for some time.
What a CLASSY review... NOT....
Dya speek Engrish mayt? Mebbe not...
This is just a Synology DS106 board inside a different external case. Specification is identical. That's why Planex don't send out review samples to anyone!
There are a couple other home NAS devices that do the same thing. ADSTech for sure, think Infrant as well. Some support other protocols such as DAAP (iTunes), UPNP, DMA, and more. They're all likely running modified Linux kernels, and more features are being added using firmware updates.
"make a label hate you"
*laugh* Funniest thing I've seen all day. I want one solely to get a label to hate me now. Engadget editors rule.
These are cool, but this is better, way cheaper and has a huge community built around it: NSLU2: http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1119460471050&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper
What are you smoking? How is "10/100 Ethernet network" better then "gigabit Ethernet"? 0GB versus 750GB?
I would sure hope that linksys is far, far cheaper, since it's not even half what Planex's unit is.
