under your budget, the company has released a new model with all the upgrades that $70 can buy. Specs on the StepNote VA7500J are almost identical to its recent sibling, including a 15.4-inch, WXGA display, 512MB of RAM, a 60GB hard drive, integrated graphics, and 802.11b/g. In fact, the only difference between the two units seems to be the CPU, with the 4101M rocking a 1.46GHz Centrino M while the 7500J sports a 1.5GHz VIA C7-M. Not much else to say about this bargain basement notebook, other than the fact that's it's only available in Japan for a cool 69,800 yen ($570).

wow. thats just over how much vista actually costs.
Vista is a great deal when you buy it with a PC. I would imagine Dell or HP pay only 30-40 per copy and pass the savings along to the customer. This is why it is much better to buy a new PC rather than upgrade.

It would still seem that people should wait for a good deal with/without rebates from Best Buy or Circuit City. I bought this one for 599 with no rebates and it's a much better laptop.

You should have at least 2GB of Ram for Vista Premium. Never go with the minimum required.
I have been running Vista for 6 months on 1GB and have no trouble whatsoever. Just add ReadyBoost!
