MacBook Pro takes bullet like a champ
We're not exactly sure what Apple's impact test procedures are for MacBook Pros, but a bullet in the side makes quite the statement. A mugging victim in Brazil avoided a trip to the ER thanks to his trusty bodyguard, a seemingly bulletproof MBP. According to the image holder (who isn't the victim or MBP owner), the lappy continues to function, although it isn't clear to what extent. Obviously, popping caps to to the top, bottom, or not-so-centered spot on the side might result in a less a heroic outcome, not to mention a busted machine. As far as brawn goes, MBP ain't no Toughbook, but at least it took one for the team.

Hey don't you think that the battery took the bullet... And this time it didn't burst into flames .... maybe we are seeing the apple battery test here...
david crowe @ Feb 26th 2007 4:43PM
Steve in the next keynote:
"Our Macbook Pros can even withstand being shot with a bullet... Boom, boom."
Iain @ Feb 26th 2007 4:45PM
Well all the bullet would have hit would be the battery compartment which actually looks to be fairly well shielded from bullets, not that I think Apple included that in their initial engineering of the MacBook Pro.

the linked article points to a flickr picture that has been removed. Odd?
The touchpad, as shown in the RandomFindings picture, is all kinds of jacked up.
and why was this person taking a Mac to a shootout? Or was he being shot at BECAUSE he had a Mac?
michael @ Feb 26th 2007 4:49PM
Ok, so? I bet my Sony Vaio laptop can take a bullet just as well. It's not that surprising. For all we know, that bullet was probaly a real softy, or that MBP was a little to clunky for size.
Meltz; @ Feb 27th 2007 8:20PM
Nope.
I'd believe a MBP to be bulletproof. I dropped mine while it was on and everything from about four to five feet off the ground, it put a little dent in the corner and a screw popped out, but it still works perfectly. These babys are tough.
StevO @ Feb 26th 2007 5:02PM
Lol this reminds me of those f@nb0ys comics with "I AM PS3! I CAN DEFLECT BULLETS"
Mike [gamebittk] @ Feb 26th 2007 5:15PM
What the hell kind of blog does this link to? You guys actually read crap like that? This was on the front page of Digg yesterday, maybe that's where this article is from.
Scabies @ Feb 26th 2007 5:19PM
huh, and in the Random Findings blog, the image detailing what happened to the touchpad has the optical drive to the left... whereas the one showing the pirate kid has it to the right?
I'm so confused.
ALLurGroceries @ Feb 26th 2007 5:42PM
In the Random Findings post the other pic is of the underside... that's why it may have looked reversed at first glimpse.
suntiger @ Feb 26th 2007 5:45PM
Dude, the picture of the warped surface is the battery, not the touchpad. Look at the pic with the screen showing, and look at how the bottom of the MacBook warps down. They flipped it over for the second pic.
alexcusack @ Feb 26th 2007 5:20PM
I have a friend that back over his powerbook in a 1.5 ton truck, and the power book was absolutely fine. but at the same time he backed over his dell and the dell was completely destroyed.
John Doe @ Feb 26th 2007 8:22PM
Bullshit. You don't run over a PowerBook, at least in its current form, and have it turn out "fine". At minimum the screen would be cracked. At minimum.
wWw @ Feb 26th 2007 5:53PM
BULLSHIT!!! POWERBOOKS AND MBP CAN GET DENTS AND DINGS WHEN YOU BUMP THEM LIGHTLY AGAINST A FREAKIN' TABLE.
rob @ Feb 28th 2007 1:45AM
um ya, most laptops will get dinged if you tap them LIGHTLY in big capital letters...on the other hand, if you tap them lightly, they won't ding. If it's a really hard table, that might make a difference and if it has happened to you, you must have been quite violent with it. btw, it still worked after you "dinged" it didn't it?
Mike @ Feb 26th 2007 6:13PM
My 12" AlBook fell out of the back seat of a car and tumbled to the pavement. When I say "fell out"... I mean, FELL OUT... and hit the pavement HARD.
Other than a dented corner of the shell and slightly bent frame, the thing is still working flawlessly today. I was able to bend the frame back with gently pressure, though it does wobble ever so slightly. Most importantly, the screen didn't take any damage.
They are tougher than they look.
Pedro Correa @ Feb 26th 2007 6:17PM
Yeah, this kind of stuff happen very often here...
That why i keep my ipod inside my heart-side pocket, but just at home 'coz someone can stole it outside, youknow...
bronzino @ Feb 26th 2007 6:28PM
sure, i'll take a bullet. but not in the chest.
grjohnston @ Feb 27th 2007 1:31AM
John Doe: I've a friend whose MacBook got run over by a car. No damage, just some track marks on the outside.
Grant @ Feb 26th 2007 11:45PM
Well, i hate to point this out, but some of the batteries Apple uses are sony, i mean they are one of the largest rechargable LI-ION battery producers.
But if anything it looks like apple took some precautions in macbook design after the exploding batteries and re-inforced the battery case.
My ibook is built like a tank, i have knocked it off my bed numerous times, the only damage it's sustanded is a busted USB port from the wireless mouse dongle getting bent the wrong way on the impact. and one time it fell on something that scratched the touchpad, but it still works.
on a funny note, my hard drive went corrupt once... but that was before i ever dropped it.
Justin @ Feb 26th 2007 11:58PM
It still functions because it's a mac. There's nothing inside for the bullet to destroy...
happyduck23 @ Feb 27th 2007 12:24AM
Actually, the Macbook could probably take a bullet and then some because it has a polycarbonite shell, which can take a pretty good beating. To put it in perspective, the nalgene bottles that are used to hold water are made of the same material and they are pretty impact resistant. However, this doesn't mean you can treat your Macbook/iBook the same as you treat your water bottle!
Kevin @ Feb 27th 2007 11:12AM
where can i get that picture on the macbook tahts on the screensaver... help me out!?
