Build your own multi-touch table
NYU may have been the first to put the mouthful that is frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR) to use in a multi-touch display, but it's not the only one experimenting with the curiously-named technology, with the folks at tinker.it building a setup of their own and explaining how they did it. As the video after the break shows, the end result is slightly less polished than NYU's device, but it puts on an impressive light show nonetheless, tracking your fingers' movement in a suitably hypnotic fashion. While tinker.it's guide doesn't exactly hold your hand though the process, those with the necessary skills should be able to build their own rig relatively easily, with some coffee table excess seemingly only a few more steps away for those with the carpentry skills to match.[Via MAKE:Blog]

I want to build this, mostly for solitare games...
I'm sure it would make a great controller for MMORPG's, if you could add a custom interface.

I tried multi-touching myself, but all I get is a POPUP indicating I should be using the JOYSTICK.
Man, I love innuendo. :P

If only we didn't have patents. Can you imagine the mad dash for corporations to implement technologies and ideas like multi touch? And electric cars?
But then, you can't forget copyrights either. I'd change them to "You have the right to remain silent." Once you distribute though, it frees itself. That's an undeniable fact. Revenue? Get government grants and donations. Can't get them? Maybe your product wouldn't make the world a better place. Windows would die quick. Anyway...
We need an in depth DIY guide to making stuff like this all over the place, with links to places where you could get supplies. You know, if some one patented the idea of a smart house, telling people exactly how to configure their own and telling them where to get components. For free, of course. To bring DIY to the person of average intelligence. Talk about competition.
