Sony denies impending 80GB PS3, let the games begin
We're not sure why Sony is playing so coy with the PlayStation 3 storage upgrades -- after all, the 360 Elite is cheaper than the 20GB PS3 yet offers six times the capacity -- but the company is already denying reports of an impending 80GB model, despite those telling FCC documents we saw earlier today. In an official statement, Sony spokesbots said that "the 80GB we're not making a comment on, but we don't have any plans at the moment," which sounds like a rather weak denial to us -- but a denial nonetheless. Since, as Eurogamer points out, you can already swap out your own higher capacity PC drive anyway, we're not sure that even if there is an eighty gigger in the wings, it's that big of a deal. Anyway, keep your eyes peeled, because you can probably expect a lot more of this back and forth until Sony finally reveals the new model with a lot of fanfare but to little surprise.[Via Joystiq]

Could you be more anti-Sony? Sure, the 360 is cheaper, but when you add an HD-DVD drive and wifi, it's far more expensive.
You just went all googly on the higher capacity 360, and as soon as a PS3 is mentioned with more storage space, you diss it.
Non-biased my ass.
myscrnnm @ Mar 29th 2007 7:30PM
Well said, not to mention the PlayStation 3 also has Bluetooth 2.0, memory card readers, fee-less PlayStation Network, et cetera.
Plus, since the PlayStation 3 uses a standard 2.5" notebook drive bay, it's way cheaper to get a larger HDD even than the Xbox 360 Elite.
LiQuiD_FuSioN @ Mar 29th 2007 10:05PM
Yes, the 360 Elite package is cheaper than the 20GB PS3 package.
What's the problem then? I fail to see any bias here.. some people are just quick to jump the gun sometimes.
Blu-Ray is a bonus for playing movies, as a gaming format, Sony is forcing everyone to use it just like with the UMD.
Playing HD-DVD movies is your own choice, as Microsoft points out, and is NOT included with any 360 package; thus, making it less expensive.
I too, would like to have built-in HD-DVD playback on my 360.. but that would make it more expensive.. you can't have both now can you? The bickering is seriously getting old now with all these know-it-alls. And that's my opinion, so please don't bother hating on me.
John Doe @ Mar 30th 2007 12:21AM
Kev,
Shut your hole fanboi. Some of us buy a console for *gasp* playing games. Not for Sony's dumb ass attempt at crushing HD-DVD through its console. If I want a next gen optical drive for watching high def video I'm going to go out and buy a dedicated player that is going to be a hell of a lot better then a half-breed PS3.
I love every PS3 fanboi's answer to anyone who says anything neg about the PS3. Its never yah its true and it sucks. You always have to put the best face on it. Its always anti-Sony. You Nintendo\MS fanboi bastards! etc.
I also find it ironic that all people who are backing the PS3 don't see one glaring fact that has been staring them in the face for over a year. Sony gives less a shit about the PS3 then winning the HD battle. Which means Sony gives less of a shit about its gaming fanbase as well. If sony gave even the slightest piss about the PS3 they would have shitcanned the BR drive and had the drive modular so people could upgrade later if they wanted. Not only would the PS3 have launched sooner but it would be cheaper and more accessable by people who don't have half a grand to spend on a gaming system. But no. the execs at Sony needed a Trojan Horse. Damn the fanbois! Full speed ahead! Chock that one down fanboi.
That being said MS isn't any better. Their core reason for even getting into the gaming biz is because they were scared pissless that Windows would become irrelevant if console systems replaced the PC in the future. In either case the underlying goal of both companies isn't to make a gaming system. The only one left whose core interest is gaming is Nintendo. I'm not saying they are perfect. Far from it. But at least their intentions aren't waist deep in bullshit.
distantbody @ Mar 29th 2007 7:40PM
This is a non-issue for the PS3 with its easily replacable hdd. The 360 is the console that is *really* constrained by Microsofts custom hdds.
SuicideNinja @ Mar 29th 2007 7:44PM
Bluetooth - Not really that useful. Nice for headsets, but from my experience no one is talking anyway. Bluetooth probably the reason you have to connect the stupid USB cable every time you do an update. That's makes it more annoying than useful to me. It's probably also the reason you disconnect in the middle of games and lost control for a few seconds randomly.
Blu-ray - A total sham. MPEG2 looks like crap. Even at 1080p, the difference between upscaled DVD and Blu-ray hardly justifies the cost difference. Unless you spend all your time scrutinizing how icicles shine a little more on Blu-ray instead of watching the movie. And make sure to gently set your controller down with utmost care...or else the hyper-sensitive triggers will ruin your time.
Wireless - If you use wireless for online gaming, you're being rude. It's slower and less reliable. Everyone should be wired whenever possible....especially on the PS3. Leave wireless for mobile devices.
HDD - The only solid argument here. The PS3's ability to use any hard drive is pretty damn sweet. It does leave me with the feeling that it will promote hacking and in-game modding a lot faster than on the 360, though.
I have a PS3 and hate it. It has no value for the moment, and it is just a practice in futility when trying to have fun with it. The menu system is horrible, and the controllers are spotty at best (exit game, turns off the controller, plug in the controller to update...really annoying). 80GB isn't going to matter if there's no reason to even use 20GB.
Ugh...sorry...I can't stop venting about the stupid black taco.
Kev50027 @ Mar 29th 2007 8:02PM
I'd be glad to take that PS3 off your hands. You obviously have no idea how to use it at all.
dantes @ Mar 30th 2007 8:42AM
Did you ever heard about someone that spent $600 in a game console to never used it. That must be the stupid thing I ever heard. It must be retard + a PR brain washed. Who care about this if its true or not WOW! BIG ISSUE WOW. this obviously the PR agenda against Sony from this games editors looser. Lets do some math here. $200 For HD-DVD, $400 XBOX 360, $100 wifi , 49.99 xbox live. You need about thousand dollars for at least get an updated hardware console. 400+200+100+49.99=749.99, not mention that this does not include an HDMI port. But at least Microsombies love there customers, they have a “super big deal” brand new black xsucks yea! They rocks!. Yea!. Now you can sale your newOld xsucks so you can upgrade to HDMI+GB HD. This is what I call. “The rapist Deal” That's Got To Hurt. Thanks god for Vaseline. PR can transform shit in to a peace of gold. What is obvious and clear like water from all this games editors articles, is they are showing themselves on the spot. keep doing your PR money making blackmail stuff .
SuicideNinja @ Mar 30th 2007 10:56PM
Dantes, you know why your math sucks? Because the PS3 isn't any fun, so it costs $600 with very little return. I don't need HD-DVD, Blu-ray, wireless, or even 60GB. I'm here for gaming. I don't care if the Xbox 360 was $1000 and the PS3 was $5. I'd get more use out of the 360 still. It's a console for gamers.
XBL is worth it...we use it everyday, so I don't see the problem. I did the math and 1 years of XBL (at $7.99 a month because I did month to month back then) and Halo 2 alone was a better value per dollar than all the Final Fantasies I've ever played...and that's hundreds of hours counting multiple play-throughs. And Halo 2 isn't the only game I play!
Entertainment value per hour...I've got maybe a dozen hours on the PS3, and hundreds on the Xbox 360, and that number continues to grow while the other stays the same.
HDMI doesn't make this huge difference that everyone is whining about, I'm just going to use VGA since both my HDMI ports are used (PS3, DVD player). I've got the expensive rig, and the PS3 just doesn't get any use. It's all Wii and 360.
Sony convinced me for a couple of weeks that the PS3 might actually be worth it. I was wrong. It will be once FFXIII comes out...and maybe Ninja Gaiden Sigma. But until then...it's nothing special.
What's wrong with having all the consoles? I'm sorry I had money to burn, and I definitely burned it. Thanks, Sony.
Mike @ Mar 30th 2007 11:17AM
Your comments make you look like a fool. There is nothing wrong with Bluetooth controllers, they don't disconnect at all, and are better than a regular wireless controller.
The reason you have to use the USB cable to initially pair them, is so your next door neibour can't pair his PS3 controller with your console, it's designed this way on purpose.. I have heard of 360 problems in close proximity flats, where neibours 360's register to other peoples consoles..
As for Blu-Ray, few titles use MPEG2, most use VC1 and H264, even then, there is nothing inheeriently wrong with MPEG2, just you need more space to store high bitrate media on. a 50GB MPEG2 encode disk looks fantastic, but no better than a VC-1 encoded 25GB title...

Where's the beef! When talking a video game system, the beef is the games. Who cares about Bluetooth, swappable drives, 1080P, HDMI, etc. if the games are weak? A video game system should be measured by the quality of the games and the user experience, not all the technical crap. Sony and their fanboys appear to be more concerned about tech specs and the like rather than the user experience. Wii do you think the Wii is selling so well??? Its the games stupid!!!

Uh oh, SuicideNinja sounds like he "accidentally" bought a PS3 at launch and is now stuck with it.
I bought mine a bit later when I knew what to expect... and I've really enjoyed it for those purposes. I don't play a ton of games but I DO watch a ton of movies, and I'm pretty happy with the stuff that's ending up on Blu-Ray. When I do feel like a game though, there's enough content to keep me occupied... for the time being.
SuicideNinja @ Mar 29th 2007 10:51PM
"Uh oh, SuicideNinja sounds like he "accidentally" bought a PS3 at launch and is now stuck with it."
LOL, hell no I don't buy anything (myself) at launch. People are too damn insane in those lines.
I bought the PS3 in January (year end bonus check). I forced myself through Resistance...and haven't done a whole lot with it since besides some Blu-ray movies. And the occasional side-by-side with the 360 for visitors that are curious.
It probably doesn't help that I bought a Wii shortly afterwards...but I don't play that very much right now either.
I (like everyone else) am waiting for the good games to come for any of the systems. We've got a few months before anything substantial shows up...but the gold is at the end of the year.
Mike @ Mar 29th 2007 9:18PM
They could toss in a complimentary terabyte HDD and I'm still getting the 360 Elite.
Take a vacation, Sony. Come back when Gran Turismo 5 and Metal Gear Solid 4 are ready to ship.
John @ Mar 29th 2007 9:29PM
Bluetooth - This is a great feature as bluetooth devices can only grow. What other wireless standard do you see coming in the near future? This can only improve and grow.
Blu Ray - Obviously you are not informed at all with high definition media at all. Blu Ray does MPEG2 and VC-1 encoding. Their earlier movies were MPEG2 encoding. But if you paid any attention to Blu Ray MPEG2 is doing a lot better now and looks great. But in any case, they can do both, up to the studio producing the film onto Blu Ray. Get your facts straight please before posting.
Wireless - I agree that wireless is not the way to go for high latency games where the slightest lag will decide whether you live or die. But for casual gamers or for those who don't play online that much, this is still a nice feature to have. The PS3 is trying to be an all purpose system. So no matter what it's nice to have this feature than not to have it. 360 makes you pay like $100 for this add-on.
HDD - PS3 absolutely has it right in this area when compared to 360. Swap in any 2.5" HDD drive and it will run. Upgrade to 160 GB for $120, sounds like a sweet deal to me. There is absolutely no need for Sony to come out with an 80 GB version unless it has features that the 60 GB version doesn't have. If they do come out with an 80 GB that is no different except for that, then I will have nothing to say about how Sony does things.
Anyway, I'm sick of all this console bashing going around. I own all systems Wii, 360, and PS3. I enjoy them all for what they provide and will provide. To me, it doesn't matter who wins or loses the console war, I just want great games to come out and for me to get the most of out the console. I am disappointed in MS for releasing the "Elite" because to me they are shooting themselves in the foot by doing that. Here they are and 360 fanboys bashing the PS3 for being expensive, and now they release this system that is only $20 cheaper than the PS3 20 GB Model. On paper, they make Sony look even better now. And for me to upgrade to 120 GB on my premium model costs me $200?!?! What the hell is that? No comment at all.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents. I do hope Sony does well though because I HATE all the Sony bashing going on. I want Sony to do well, so that all the people out there can finally shut up and buy a system where you DO GET YOUR MONEYS WORTH!
Peace.

"Blu Ray does MPEG2 and VC-1 encoding. Their earlier movies were MPEG2 encoding. "
I know this; they both support the same things sans BD+ and maximum storage space (obviously, the former is a bad thing. DRM if you pay attention).
But they don't use the better codecs...so what's your point? I can view "True HD" any time in 1080p on Blu-ray over their "precious" HDMI...and it continues to fail to be impressive.
I have people come over and I have to point out that I'm watching a Blu-ray movie...then I pull out the DVD version and upscale it....switch between the two...and they only notice a slight improvement (or women's facial hair...yuck) when paused. This tells me that it's not doing its job.

PS: SuicideNinja, if you really have a PS3 and think it sux, sell it on ebay or craigslist... I know at least 2 folks that'll take it off your hands(used) for about $550

My problem is the way they reported it. They're putting down the PS3 like it's crap, and comparing it to something that isn't comparable.
There's no question that they hate Sony and they are biased. They also hate Microsoft though. Ya know what company they love? Apple. Remember those 200,000 posts about the Apple TV (the totally useless white box)?

Why is everyone down on wireless gaming? I play COD2 online with my MacBook Pro over a wireless connection, and it is great. I routinely have one of the better scores in the match. I've never had any kind of problem. Maybe it's wireless on a windows pc that is bad? I don't know, I've never used a windows machine with wireless. Perhaps someone can explain.
SuicideNinja @ Mar 29th 2007 10:43PM
Wireless gaming is inherently less reliable. You create your own bottleneck locally by maxing out at 54Mbps between you and your router. That's half the speed it should be between those two points.
Wireless also gets interference and doesn't handle bandwidth as well. If you encrypt like you are supposed to, it's even slower.
You can use Linux if you want. Wireless is not yet at a point of high speed and reliability.
Stick with wired.
kingofwale @ Mar 29th 2007 10:15PM
>Blu-Ray is a bonus for playing movies, as a gaming format, Sony is forcing everyone to use it just like with the UMD.
is it really? I was under the impression that Blu-Ray also uses to PLAY GAME! PS3 games are on Blu-Ray so you get 25-50GB of storage. I find it funny nobody is bashing DS for its format but quick to jump on Sony for creating something that holds a lot more space and quite portable.. hmmmm... no biases?
your left nut @ Mar 29th 2007 11:03PM
but if the fastest download speed you can get is 10-15 mbps, where is the bottleneck? I'm not trying to be an ass, i'm really just trying to understand. Thanks.
SuicideNinja @ Mar 30th 2007 11:40AM
It's not technically a bottleneck for lack of a better term on my part. The data still has to get from point A to point B before it gets to C (A = client, B = router, C = internet).
Say you are driving to work and have to stop at a gas station. If you went 30mph to the gas station and then 30mph to work, how long would it take you?
Now if you went 60mph to the gas station and 30mph to work, it would be faster, right?
It's not necessarily the best analogy (as it doesn't count for throughput), but it should give you an idea. If you connect at 11Mbps wirelessly and then 54Mbps, you'll notice the difference, even if your broadband is only 10Mbps.
Mike @ Mar 30th 2007 11:21AM
So please tell us what your Internet connection speed is, I am interested to know, as my 54G wireless connection is still 7 times faster than my internetion connection here in the UK...
Bluetooth controllers have zero lag, your arguments have more holes than my socks...
SuicideNinja @ Mar 30th 2007 12:13PM
Mike...what does internet connection speed have to do with wireless? Is your provider wireless? That's even worse...
"Bluetooth controllers have zero lag, your arguments have more holes than my socks..."
Lag isn't the issue. Explain why in the middle of Resistance, with a fully charged battery, why Mr. Hale decides to suddenly walk into walls with his gun pointed in the air. The controller stops responding. Control is regained after a few seconds. It's happened in some of the game demos as well. It happened in GoW2 the other day. I've NEVER had that problem with a 360 controller. And it can't be blamed on the wireless network card (early scapegoat), because obviously I don't use it.
I'm just tell it how it is. I've got three Playstation fans in the house and none of them like the PS3; not even a little bit. They actually thanked me for buying it so they didn't waste their tax-return money. Glad I could be the damn guinea pig...
If everyone is convinced that it's some magical console, then so be it.
wslcrew @ Mar 29th 2007 11:41PM
From what I've read in the Korean website Ruliweb, SCE is switching to 80GB as their HDD supplier is trying to discontinue 60GB. Apparently there's no price difference between them (from Sony's point of view), so they are gonna put 80GB drives in the future models. I don't think it's got anything to do with Xbox 360 elite.
Richard @ Mar 30th 2007 12:08AM

Your points are all wrong, you obviously know nothing about Microsoft or Sony, and there is nothing wrong with having a preference on where I spend my money.
The "fanboy" (spell it right, idiot) attack is pathetic, everyone has an opinion and a preference, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it.
My problem with Engadget is that they are a news source, and news sources need to stay somewhat un-biased, however Engadget is full of flaming Apple fanboys who put down everything Sony or Microsoft. In this case, they're bashing Sony for doing something they just praised Microsoft for doing.
That's hypocrisy, but with your knowledge of the English language I wouldn't expect you to know what that means.

Andir3.0 @ Mar 30th 2007 8:11AM
Keyboards (and mice?) work on Bluetooth now if I remember correctly. I'm not quite sure what you'd use it for pertaining to a cell phone, but Sony keeps adding functionality with every firmware update.
Kev50027 @ Mar 30th 2007 11:41AM
I've said this many times before and I'll say it again.
Not only can the PS3 play the best games ever made (that were made for the PS2), it's still in its infancy, so you can't expect it to have every amazing game out yet.
I suggest sitting back in your chair and just waiting another year before passing judgment on the PS3's games and comparing them to a system that has been out for far longer.
While PS3 owners are waiting, the PS2 was the most popular game console of all time, and it has the highest rated games of all time as well, and they all play on the PS3.
The 360 can't play the majority of Xbox games, which is a HUGE disadvantage.
Rob @ Mar 30th 2007 1:06AM
I think you are all confused about the speed ratings on wireless connections. 54mb/sec, 100mb/sec, etc. is referring to the volume of data that can pass through that connection, otherwise known as 'bandwidth'.
What you guys are referring to is 'latency' or the time it takes for the data to transmit from one endpoint to another. Since radio waves travel at the speed of light (as does all electromagnetic radiation), it is impossible for us to perceive the communication delay between a remote wireless device and a wireless access point. Even with obstructions radio waves are still traveling at the speed of light, only less of them reach the intended target. Thus, only bandwidth is affected since the volume of radio waves is reduced.
So, why the latency problems? Hardware, hardware, hardware! Even with light-speed communication over the air, the computer still has to translate that information, process it, and respond. And when that same hardware has to encrypt and decrypt on the fly, the response time is delayed.
This webpage does a great job of explaining these concepts:
http://www.ezlan.net/latency.html

I ask because Bluetooth is cited as a huge feature of the ps3, but if its feature set is crippled, it's not as huge an advantage as you'd think. It's just a different way of connecting mice, keyboards (both of which cost more than wired or wireless via usb alternatives) or headsets to the console. If I can't send video, audio or pictures from my cell phone or PDA to a PS3, that's a major feature that should be there that isn't.

It's funny to see how easily people jump on the bandwagon to crap all over Sony.
If you don't care for the PS3...Don't buy one. It's very simple.
I find it truly amazing that readers can be worked into such a lather over an FCC filing. This filing was made because of the Bluetooth change...not the hard drive.

I disagree. Obviously you don't own a PS3 to say that Resistance is the only good game on it. Virtua Fighter 5, Resistance, and Motorstorm are fantastic games. Motorstorm got dinged a bit for it's single player, but the multi-player is awesome. There ARE good games on it right now if you would look. Plus, more games on the way later this year means PS3 is here to stay. Sorry for you haters that don't understand, but Sony isn't about to dive out and leave the system hanging.
Re: John Doe
You really like using the word fanboi don't you? Well, you sound less educated about gaming, and appear to be more of a biased, non-informed and angry person more than anything else. Sony only wants to drive Blu-ray and doesn't care about games? Oh, yeah, that's why they've been releasing timely updates to the firmware, supporting more games, more gaming features, and bringing their online service in-line with what gamers want. Not to mention that they have some really good games! And, with more on the way, it's only going to get better over time....just like all previous generation Playstations have been. From a developer's point of view, you need to read what Insomniac's producer recently said about the PS3. 10 reasons why PS3 will succeed. It might change your mind a bit.
Sony is pushing a format (Blu-ray) to improve the standard. Many developers and programmers alike have commented that blu-ray will enable them to make better games with far less texture compression and more space to put content in the game with. No one is forcing you to buy Blu-ray. If you don't like where the industry is headed, then stick with your old system. But, change is coming my friend. You can either ride the wave, or be swallowed by it.

Also if you want the 360 upgraded drive it will cost you $179.99. That is crazy and exactly what Sony wants to stay away from proprietary products. They are leaving upgrading up to us with just about whatever we want. I am so tired of people using price as a problem. With all of you 360 people that bought the high-end model now you are going to have to shell out another 179 to catch up with all the PS3 can do. Also MS is screwing you by making you pay that much for a 120gig drive that is ridiculous.
