Treo 755p for Sprint in the wild

We know you're starting to get a little tired of the aerial on that 700p of yours; no, seriously, we feel your pain. You're looking longly at that 680 over there, but the leap over to Cingular -- and to GSM, for that matter -- can be a treacherous one indeed for some users. Happily, the 755p is coming just in time to save the day before you all go out of your gourds, and for a Garnet-based EV-DO piece, she's looking mighty purty. A reader wrote in to describe his recent brush with the 755p to us, and came away with the impression that it's slimmer, lighter, and easier to hold thanks to concave surfaces on the phone's sides. A couple launch keys on the front side have disappeared (leaving only two), the stylus is a little lighter, and although the camera is still a mere 1.3 megapixels, pictures are apparently of a much higher quality. Music to a weary 700p user's (or, better yet, a 650 user's) ears, eh? See you in the next couple months!

OK - I have been trying to figure out some of the terminology as I am trying to decide what phone to get. I currently have the Blackberry Pearl but I was a 650 Treo user for the last 2 years and I wanted something better. The Blackberry is confusing and I don't think the roller ball is a good option... can anyone help me with the comparison?

I had a Treo 700p for about 4 months. I was walking down the back stairs of my house and accidentally dropped it. It fell 3 stories and died. I called the insurance and they sent me out a refurbished treo 700p that kept resetting itself. I took it to the sprint store and they ordered me a refurbished 755p. Honestly, i prefer the 700p to the 755. The 700 had better reception than the 755.

Not to clown on you guys (but its easy) I'm not sure if these comments are recent or not because I'm sure by now you guys would have figured out the differences by now. First off outlook is now dirrect push technology thats huge that means email at live time. Next the screen resolution on the 755p is higher than any treo past or present that includes you losers with that crappy lock up all the time windows mobile 5.0. The screen backlight is much brighter as well. And the most important thing of all is the phone app. is the best its ever been very easy to use with easy screen options, unlike all those treos in the past and after all it is a phone right! Oh and lastly which im sure you guys noticed first is no antenna. One more thing Microsoft sux!!

Ok just to let you guys know I had the Treo 700p and now own the 755p. World of difference regarding performance. I had 2 700p's both were crap, junk worthless, horrible pieces of equipment. My 700p crashed so much it was as common as blinking. I have had my 755p and I think two crashes and I have had it alomost two months, it has been awesome. Some of you guys say they didn't do anything but Palm did something because this Treo actually works like it is supposed to.

I do not recommend buying this phone, it seems the best part of the 755 is that it weighs less than the 700. Where is the new OS and ultra thin treo? No wonder they are up for sale.

that sucks how sprint gets the phone but its not windows mobile... they couldve at least given them the choice of either palm os or WM5 (or 6 if its being released anytime soon.) i have the treo 750 for cingular and i have used the palm os in the 680 or so and to be honest i didnt even like it... ill stay with my windows mobile :) ...

Am I seeing things, or did they keep the same button layout from the 680 and 700 in the 755? Consistency? What the heck? Sounds like a great phone to jump to if you're still on a 600 or 650.

WM in any version is a very very poor UI for a mobile device, so it's great to see Palm still supporting the classic OS. It has the best UI from a mobile user's POV.

jjd - on the 700, there were 4 quick launch keys (phone, home, messages, scheduler). On the 755 it's actually just 2 solid keys with 2 functions on each as opposed to 4 separate ones. I think it was just a little confusion on that sentence.

Um... Yeah, I don't think anyone is thinking of switching to the 680 from the 700P when there is no 3G available on the 680.

You know, if this had wi-fi (and maybe a flash), it would d@mn near be perfect for me. I like my 700p but it's just a tad too chunky...and the antenna pisses me off (Why is it there??? I know they don't need it and it does nothing but poke me in the side.). But unless I could get this at a great price (or if I could sell my 700p for a great price) I seen no reason to "upgrade"...wi-fi would sway me tho.

I'm glad they brought the Palm version first, WM5 is too slow for me (WM6 looks promising...but only if they step up the rez to 480x480, the stock 240x240 is retarded).

I have a 650 and a 680 through AT&T (Cingular), and I'd mainly be interested in just what the differences are between the 755 and the 680. From the photos, they look very much the same. And the description in the article sounds just like the 680 to me (concave sides, etc). Could the 755 have 128MB to the 680's 64MB? Or is the 755 really just a CDMA 680 and Sprint wanted a higher model number because '680' sounds like a step back from '700'?

I think the 680 is a good smartphone. You're not going to make them much thinner and lighter and still have a decent touchscreen, keyboard, and battery life. Phones like the Q sacrifice touchscreen and battery capacity to be thinner. Hell, the 680 sacrificed battery capacity to be thinner and lighter than the 650, and that's my biggest complaint. I'd rather have it be fatter and heavier and last 2+ days on one charge - I've had my 680 used up its battery with on heavy use day, which never happened with my 650. (Overall I still prefer the 680 ergonomically.)

Disappointing, to say the least. This truly looks like a 700p in a 750's body. It probably also uses miniSD instead of SD, so for those of us "upgrading" from a 700p, you would also have to get new memory. Unless this thing has Wifi or some other killer app, I see NO reason to upgrade outside of aesthetics. That's fine, I want the mystery 3rd arm Palm device anyway.

I actually think the 700p is more attractive (650 is the most attractive Treo). Antenna-less Treos look funky.


To MegaZone: This is not a CDMA 680. Well, not exactly. It's what happens when a 750v and a 680 have a baby. Palm OS of the 680 with the look and data radio speed of the 750v.

Looks the same, minus the antenna. Interestingly enough, I read an article last year on CNET that said that phones that don't have at least a stub antenna consistently have 15% poorer reception than phones that do have the antenna. And, my experience with all my friends with antenna-less phones supports this.

And the point of this "new" Treo is what? As a 700p owner, I see absolutely no reason to "upgrade" to the 755P. Maybe this wasn't intended as a real "upgrade" and was simply an "update" to the curent device to give it jsut a little more life while PALM works on a NEW Treo? Sure hope so for their sake.

Honestly I love palm, but they launch projects WAY too friggin fast... Fix the bugs on WM6 before you move on.. And get a little innovation in new design if your marketing a product hoping the user is going to change from one identical phone to the next... for $650 more :-\ dot[dot]dot...

I had the Treo 650-Sprint for about 3 years and this week upgraded to the 700wx-Sprint. Just to be sure, this new 750 is just an upgrade of the 700p, correct? I want to be sure there is no new upgrade from the 700wx. I am still within the 30 day return period.

I am still getting used to the 700wx because I loved the 650. The text messaging was 10x better and on the new 700wx, I find myself either accidentally hitting the mute or hold buttons in the middle of a conversation.

I have had the 755p for a few weeks now, and I would definitely recommend it over the 700p with one caveat (at the end).

First off, the feel of the 755p is so much more comfortable than the 700p and not just because of the lessened weight. The rubberized casing makes a huge difference -- for starters, I've barley dropped this unit compared to the 650 I had, and when you place it down on a smooth surface it doesn't slide around. Also, when you cradle it to your shouder, it doesn't slip around. The grippiness makes this unit much more comfortable than the 680 (which my friend has). The lack of antenna is also very cool since I can stash it in my pocket upside down and not have to spin around when I pull it out. The lack of antenna has not degraded reception in the least (if anything, it's better than the 650p and no different than the 700p).

Although you can add the EAS component to the 700p, it appears that whatever software issues with the 700p and 680p that made them lock up and reboot have mostly been cleared up (there is a patch for the 680p for these issues). My 755p has only needed one hard reboot in three weeks -- this shatters the record for any Treo I've owned.

The button confusion is due to the fact that the pairs of buttons for phone/calendar and mail/home are now rockers instead of individual buttons. This has absolutely no effect on functionality other than there is only one LED to light each pair.

The miniSD thing is annoying (even the 680 supports the standard SD card), but those cards have come way down in price. I just ordered a 246MB miniSD for under $10. And frankly, the only reason I even needed the SD card was because the 50p has so little on-board memory. I've gone on without an SD in the 755p without a hitch.

The biggest drawback is the battery life. When I work in the city, the 650 has always lasted the entire day, which consists of surfing on a 45 minute commute to and from, various web lookups, and phone calls. I've never had it run out -- in the red, yes, but never just kaput. Twice now, the 755p has totally died by the time I got on the train home. And there is precious little time between the warning and the auto-shut down compared to the 650p. It's like the difference between cruising for 30 miles after the fuel light goes on versus 3 miles. To be fair, I never had EAS running on the 650p, so it may be sucking more juice than using bizconn. If this is the biggest issue for you and you have no way of charging during the day, then consider this a deal breaker. I'm just going to have to get used to charging it during the day now. There is also a larger capcity aftermarket battery I'm going to look into.

AFAIC, the 755p is da bomb.

What kind of skills does it take to put a logo in the corner and sell the damn thing??? A red 755p (nice color!) What I like about it is that I can get my email anytime (I have it set to auto-sync with my domain each 5 mins.) I love the slider sound on/off on the top (easy) and how easy it is to record (just hold the side button in.) I really like the PalmOS and the built in programmable phone menu buttons that you use the 'main rocker' 4-way to access. I have 4 set to autodial frequent callers and three more for web, email, and my calendar (which by the way syncs up with my desktop Palm software, which syncs up with a web interface using Airset - free.)

I added an App launcher that uses Tabbed notebooks which is really easy so now I have three launchers - the default one by Palm, the Tabbed launcher, and the default phone-one using the main rocker and programmable software buttons. So far I like the latter best - they are fast and I can mix in speed dial to my friends right along with any app I choose.


It has tons of memory, so I haven't bought a $10 minisd card yet. When I add some movies I probably will.

I would say that I use the memo pad, a doc reader (I use "ReadThemAll" again freeware and great) and the task manager the most, followed by email, SMS messaging and the phone itself of course. I've only taken one or two pictures and one movie - so I use those apps the least.

In the calendar the "week view" doesn't show appointments only as bars /dots so that sucked/ useless, so I found a good third-party replacement which adds this feature to the existing calendar db- it's very nice now. (KSDatebook.)

The color is great, I really like the - is it maroon? reddish color. The feel of the case is very nice. To improve the feel of the case, I'm ordering a double size battery which will make the back fatter, fill out the hole in my palm when I'm holding this one.

Slim and small - only slightly thicker than a brand new Blackberry.

Ringtones - there is freeware to take ANY slice of any MP3 and make it your ringtone ("Music Tones"). NICE and no more paying for ringtones babieee.

Coming from an m505, the i-500, and the Treo650.
I really like this Treo 755p with the PalmOS and would recommend it to anyone.

Use MiniTones, it just inserts them as a ringtone so you'll want to edit them and then put them on the SD card and then use this program. It's currently at http://software.palminfocenter.com/product.asp?id=11197 but do a search if they later move it. It only works on Treo telephones.

Palm deserves to go out of business. I own the 750 & 755. even though both are supposed to be smartphones, the 755 is a stupid phone trust me! palm has made no major upgrades to the OS in years while everybody else passes them by.

WM6 is a far superior OS. it does everything better than the palm OS. just a brief example. if anybody needs examples just respond to this comment. Sprint is about to lose me as a customer because their phones are terrible & by now they should have come with the WM6.

are they serious that the centro is supposed to be next generation???
