Sager rolls out budget-minded NP6650 laptop
Sager has busted out a new laptop for those that prefer to keep things in the three-figure range, with its NP6650 model providing some decent looks and reasonable specs for your dollar. Packing a 15.4-inch widescreen display as standard, you can configure the system with your choice of Celeron M or Core 2 Duo processors, along with up to 2GB of RAM, a max 200GB hard drive, VIA Chrome 9HC graphics, a built-in webcam, and either a CD-RW or DVD burner. While maxing things out will up the price considerably, opting for the minium configuration will let you take one of these homes for as little as $599.[Via PC Launches]

How many more of these "budget" laptops will flood the market?

Just like budget cars, that market won't be going anywhere. It will continue to expand, and our ideas of what makes something "budget" will shift up. At one time, automatic transmissions and air conditioning weren't normally on budget cars. Now, they frequently are. Over the next couple of years, I expect a DVD burner to be standard. You will pay extra for some sort of HD format, I imagine. Also, multiple cores will likely be commonly available, if Intel's pushes in this regard are to be believed.
