While we aren't exactly keen on the taste of salt trickling down our throats, we're afraid a healthy dose is in order with this one. According to the always questionable DigiTimes,
Quanta Computer is actually developing a "PDA handset" for
Dell, and considering that it was but eight days ago that the firm's
Axim hit the graveyard, the timing here is doubtlessly intriguing. Of course, this isn't the first time rampant rumors have swirled around a
newfangled Dell handheld, but the outcome here could be a tad different
than before considering the
handset guru that just recently punched in. The project is reportedly operating under the codename "Fly," and while no design specifics were handed out, it should sport Windows Mobile 6,
HSDPA, and probably a QWERTY keyboard to boot. Whatever the case, at least this thing shouldn't
conflict with any Cisco trademarks if it all pans out.

if it's as affordable as the Axims and comes with the intel 2700G (x50v/x51v) or something better from the other guys (GoForce, Imageon), I might just get it.

With Apple getting into the phone business this step by Dell almost makes sense. I just hope they are able to add something to it not found in other WM devices...

^the video processor exactly, the 2700G lets me play DVD quality videos and play Playstation games on a VGA screen. This kind of quality is usually very expensive on PocketPC phones (for whatever reason) and it's made to wait with a standard Motorola until I can get something worth it

I really doubt these guys have something to offer the market.
Either this device should be priced at 50% or less than the iPhone .. or its display should be hi-res with 800 pixels width (like the displays demonstrated by Samsung/Hitachi).

It is great to see large companies working on cellphones. They have alot of money so it should be an awesome phone.

They might not have to fight Cisco, but LeapFrog might want to have a word with them:

It's not a phone, but it is a "mobile computer" in the very (very) broad sense of the term...

This is something Dell should have done a long time ago. It probably took Michael Dell coming back on for them to smell the coffee of convergence. Although they are late coming into the space, it is a no brainer for their distribution model... and PDA's on their own are passe (e.g. Axim).
