Dell's XPS M2010 now sporting slot-loading Blu-ray drive
We've got all ideas that anyone crushing on Dell's awkward, albeit expansive, XPS M2010 probably already has one by now, but if you've just started falling for the unsightly beast, this one just may pull the trigger for you. Just over a week after cramming half a terabyte of hard drive space into the machine, Dell is now offering up an internal slot-loading 2x speed Blu-ray burner for the HD set. As expected, this newfangled luxury won't run you cheap, as the BD-equipped machine will run you upwards of $4,000 -- and that's before the upgrade bug attacks at the checkout aisle.

Unsightly? I get nothing but compliments on my M2010. They are great desktop replacements, and if I need to I can just pick it up and go.

Somebody please just give me ONE good reason to own a BluRay drive because throughout my day to day use I don't even usually need a DVD drive.

uh oh.... if Dell chooses blu-ray, this could tip in favor of blu-ray then.

Dell has been with Blu-Ray for awhile now, so nothing swinging there way that hasn't been.

You're kidding, right? Dell is part of the Blu-ray Disc Association's board of directors, among Sony, Philips, and others. What surprises me is that it took this long to start putting BD drives in their computers.

You used the word "albeit" incorrectly.

Engadget: Please take a second look at that slot load blu-ray drive, from what I know there is no such thing as a BD-ROM slot load (read only), and after further research, dell explains that the Blu-ray drive can "Read, Write, and Playback hours of High Quality, HD Video"
See image from optical drive section of the computer specs:

I agree with Rick. Just look at:

You can get to the link via customize->optical-drives->help-me-choose.
The BD-ROM is rewritable.

I'd direct any sane person's attention to the upgrade price from 1 GB memory to 4 GB memory: $1500 to $1700, depending on speed.
Is anyone home at Dell?
Timothy Frierson @ Apr 19th 2007 3:18PM
I still want one(can't afford it...)
Britboyj27 @ Apr 19th 2007 3:53PM
The vast, vast majority of people who buy Dell's (read: the technologically illiterate) don't give two hoots about Blu-Ray.

Old news. Pretty much all the hardware makers (apple + dell included) like BluRay. Game over.
Suck it MS. What the hardware makers say, goes.
