iPodMods offers 100GB upgrades for iPods and Zunes

The folks at iPodMods have already managed to cram a 40GB hard drive into a Zune (among other mods), but that apparently wasn't enough to whet their appetite for storage, with 'em now taking things even further by stuffing 100GB drives into both Zunes and iPods. In addition to the standard Zune, both 60GB and 80GB iPods will apparently accept the upgrade without too much trouble, with 30GB 5G and 5.5G iPods also able to accommodate the change, albeit with a slightly modified back cover. Whether that added storage space is worth the $300 price tag for the hard drive or not (or more if you're wary of the self-install route), you'll have to decide for yourself.

I'm a 80GB Ipod owner, and you know what I want?

how about better battery? or just a way to switch my battery?
I am nearly maxed out on my 30GB Zune... using a subscription music service turned me into a music whore.
100GB would be nice but why stop there, I'd actually like a 250GB!
Just drop your subscription. In less than 30 days you'll have a full 30GB available! (Sorry, some snarks are just too easy)
Hmm... it only makes sense if you're trying to upgrade your 30GB ipod, but at $300 why not just buy a new 80GB.

You're right why should they make it that high of a price?
this is useless because apple will release new ipods very soon. ( summer)
i predict they will release:
a 120 gb (same form factor as current 5g)
a video ipod with 32gb of flash memory (full screen) (toshiba flash memory article?)
a even smaller, even more capacity nano and shuffle
that is all i have to say, what do you think?
They won't be coming out with any ipods over 100gb anytime soon, Toshiba has only made the drives up to 100gb, and these were released at least half a year ago and still haven't been used in ipods.
thats rediculous... 100GB of space? I know some people will be able to fill it, but still... A price tag of $300 is kind of steep.

If they come up with a FireWire/USB housing these might fly off the shelves as ultraportable external drives. And at that size they might even make a clip-on adapter to expand the iPod storage, not replace it.

What I want to know is whether I can drop a Sandisk 1.8" drive in my 30GB iPod as it has bricked itself after being dropped one too many times. I would even pay all that money. *sigh*

I *believe* the Toshiba 100GB HDD that kjartan refers to is a ZIP interface. Don't know if that works in an iPod or not-- I don't know if it's ATA or ZIP. (Anyone? Anyone?)
This Toshiba 1.8" factor is the same as the Sony Vaio TX series, and I'm looking to upgrade my Sony TX series HDD to a 100GB from a 60GB HDD because I too have become an iTunes frequent shopper.
I can buy another iPod or Zune for $299.99

100GB just isn't enough music these days... what we REALLY need is a mod that fits one of those new hitachi 1TB drives in an ipod.
but seriously, i remember the good old days (before DRM, before metallica sued napster) of DAPs. my first mp3 player back in 1999 held 64MB and cost me $270 (rio 500).

Upgrading HDDs in these things isn't anything new. I'd replaced 20Gb HDDs with 40Gb HDDs in iPods about a year ago. It's not even remotely difficult to do, just pop the cover, take the old drive out, plug the new one in, pop cover back on, plug it in and do a "restore". Bang, off you go with more storage. Availability of a bigger dual-platter drive doesn't make any difference to things other than the final capacity. Pity Toshiba charges so much for the things.
I wouldn't trust iPodMods with my iPod again anyway. I sent it in to get a new click wheel because the original had been pulled off due to a lousy decal. Nonetheless, my iPod was almost in perfect condition when I sent it to them and it came back with scratches.
As others have said this is useless, now if they can throw one in an iPhone in a couple months THEN I'll be excited. The 8gb they'll come with isn't sufficient. And to anybody who has a Zune, you're a moron.
Seriously thinking about trying to gut an IPod and fit in a case that's big enough for a 2.5" drive. The catch is that 1.8" drives are 3.3V while 2.5" are 5V. The reason for this is that I now need > 80Gb and while 2.5" drives are cheap in 120Gb, and available up to 160 and 200Gb, large capacity 1.8" drives are still horrendously expensive.
Oh how I wish somebody made an updated Zen Xtra that ran Rockbox.
Rockbox, yeaaaah. If Rockbox ran on the iPod 5.5G, I'd buy an 80GB one. As it is, my iRiver H140 is full, and I'm thinking of buying a (discontinued) iPod 5.0G 60GB, now that I know it's expandable (froogling it, I see the 100GB drive advertised for about $210). But I'd rather have the 5.5G; I do wish Rockbox would hurry! I'd upgrade my iRiver, but the 80GB drive for that is rare and expensive.
Julian, 2.5" drives are cheap, but you really want a player that big? Well, maybe you do; I don't.
