Sony ups PlayStation 3 firmware to v1.7, PSOne titles not faring so well
Another PlayStation 3 firmware update, another list of issues. Unfortunately, this seems to be somewhat of a recurring theme, and while users may not have found issues with last month's refresh, the v1.7 isn't as kind. Reportedly, the latest update enables the PS3 "to play PSOne titles that are already saved on your PSP," but numerous sources are suggesting that the feature, um, doesn't work. On a lighter note, PSOne and PS2 dual shock controllers will now shake, rattle, 'n rumble when connected to your PS3, and those with PSPs sitting around can also hit up v3.4 (required for the PSP-to-PS3 playback) on their handheld machine. So, dearest readers, we'll point the question at you: is your recently update PS3 playing nice with those PSOne selections?

It's common knowledge (if you're not Joystiq) that the existing PS1 games were formatted only for the PSP and that the weekly update to the PlayStation Store is scheduled for tomorrow.
Now for my impression of a rabid Xbox360 fanboy:
"PS3 = teh sux!1! Xbox360 rulez! LOL"
Based on the website, it looks like one must download the PS1 game again from the store. I assume they made some changes to the PS1 game files. Additionally, perhaps they have not updated the store yet? Well, I hope this works correctly because I'd be down with some Wipeout on my PS3.
Actually, I have not been able to get it to work yet. Bummer!
No response. All 5 PS3 owners are busy holding down 3 jobs right now to pay off their purchase. Good luck tracking them down for a response.
The minute they straighten all this crap out and I can finally get PSOne titles on my PSP w/o a PS3 I will go and buy a PS3. I think that will be the point I feel the PS3 has grown up enough that I would feel comfortable buying one. Until then, I'll let all the early adopters continue to be the beta testers.
I don't think the PS1 games for PS3 will be available until sometime today around normal PSStore update time.
@Mike - If you run a custom firmware on your PSP you can put Playstation 1 games on your PSP without a PS3.
@PostScript
Are you serious? I paid $100 more for my PS3 than my 360. Add in my Live subscription and the difference is only $50. Try doing something other than flipping burgers.
@Foebea: yeah, but if people cared enough to put on OE firmware, they wouldn't be having this discussion in the first place. Oh, wait, I guess I did, and I am....
Yeah, OE is the way to go -- I'm running 3.10 OE-A, and couldn't be happier. Why would I shell out good money for e.g. the XBLA version of Castlevania when I can play the PSX version that I've owned for ~5 years, on a portable system? Dark Alex FTW!!!
primetime4:
So you have the discontinued 20GB PS and paid too much for live.
@Ordeith
Considering microsoft charges $99 for the USB WiFi adapter, that puts the 360 and the PS3 high end within $100 of each other... The low end PS3 and 360+WiFi are (were i guess since Sony discontinued the 20gb model) the same price.
As someone who has both, the PS3 sucks. Ive played it maybe 10 times. 5 of those were the Gran Tourismo demo, 3 were to show people the graphics, and the first two were the first two days i owned it.
The sad thing is that i might actually end up playing it MORE if i can get some PS1 classics whose discs i lose like crash bandicoot and jet moto working on it.
P.S. whatever happened to the jet moto series? I loved it :(
"Recurring theme"? I don't recall any issues with prior firmware revisions. I *do* recall Engadget jumping the gun before and reporting on issues that weren't, like people trying the EU PS3 software emulation before the firmware revision that supported it arrived.
Okay, here is the sad truth of Xbox 360 vs. PS3 (according to me, an owner of both):
XBox 360 has more and better games. I admit I play it much more than my PS3. However, the hardware is poorly made. I am on my second 360 and I am worried every day that I turn it on that it may be its last. That being said, the number of quality games is still lacking for a console of its age.
PS3 is in desperate need of some GOOD games. Resistance was great, but I want something new (and not more 360 ports). The hardware seems to be excellent, and I've heard very few problems of broken PS3's.
Both have live service, and both are equally good, in my opinion, but the main problem with the PS3 online service is still lack of games and low install base of the PS3.
It is really just too soon to say which is better, especially with new firmwares coming out for both systems on a fairly regular basis, and new games which will be releasing this summer. My advice: get an XBox 360 with a replacement plan, and if you have the means, a PS3 as well (I'm really not a fan of the Wii, but that's another story).
Bill:
Most any wireless bridge will work with the 360, 802.11g devices are available for $30 that get the job done. You don't need to spend the $100 if you want wireless.
Ok, so i still dont get the price arguement. To get the 360 up to par with the PS3 (60gb0 use the "premium" console (399). Add HD-DVD drive (498), add cheap ass wireless (ordeith's $30 solution- $528), purchase a cheap card reader ($548). then add your ohhh soo sweet XBL for $40 a year (or whatever) So approx $588.. but youre STILL short HDMI, 40GB of HDD & you have to pay to play online every year.
THEN get pissed off that a few months after you bought your sweet console an upgraded one (which takes care of the HDD and HDMI, and comes in SONY BLACK) comes out for what, $50 more than you paid? now THAT doesnt suck. plus youre still stuck with 9GB game discs and having to shell out cash for the HD DVD drive and some sort of wireless solution. and the HDD is a non issue with the PS3 since you can just swap it for whatever size you want at any time. So get over the price.
you forgot to mention how extremely noisy the xbox360 is, which imo is the worst thing about it. I might get one again if they reduce the whirring on the disc drive. anyone know if the elite has a quieter disc drive/
The XBOX 360 feels more solid to me, it wasn't as much as an experiment but more of making a one stop shop for true gaming, great graphics, great controller, great games, great online play and excellent development tools that mean developers are choosing the 360 over the PS3.
My opinion on the price difference is exactly the opposite to what most of you are saying, I hate wireless, it sucks and until we get the N standard it consoles it just doesn't make sense to me. I'd much rather hide a wire under my carpet.
How much storage do you really need anyway? I can save games on my 20GB drive and download demo games that I delete when I get bored. 60GB is great but I'd rather not wait for a 10GB game demo anyway.
I love my 360 because I can hook it straight into my computer monitor with no hassle, the XBL service is great, fast and in the UK you can buy the live vision camera with uno and 13 months subscription service for £49.99 (just google it).
Also I get gamer achievements and a gamer score which makes me want to get that little extra juice out of every game I own and sometimes you can find first release games brand new for under £10 delivered. Most titles over 6 months old are £20 or under and these are quality games that are still £40/£50 on the PS3!
Essentially, I can upgrade my console to the best super dooper version if I want, but I don't want wireless etc but I have a choice! I don't pay for things I don't need/want.
It doesn't have an hi definition drive built in but when I start to watch movies again since everything produced in Hollywood (and therefore BR/HD) is a pile of crap recently, I might buy just one.
Oh, and I have my 5.1 speakers so loud anyway I can't hear my neighbours banging on the wall let alone the DVD drive whirring.
I'm having no problems with the PSP/PS3 updating to this firmware, I AM having problems with the new halo 2 maps not downloading.
Hmmmmm, the PS1 games not playing right on a PS3. Seriously that sounds really dumb to me. I mean Sony is toting the rig as a killer high-def machine, and people are complaining about PS1 games not working. I think they are mad because all the good games are "crappy" PS1 games. :)
I have a solution to that problem that only cost $30 :) (Yes, I know what you are going to say: "But I only want one device")
I DO only want one device. It is bad enough that I had to take out my spare tyre to put in my car computer and sacrifice center-console space for my mounted Playstation 3, but I'm out of room. I had to put my router and wireless bridge (Linksys WRT54GS w/DD-WRT) behind my dash. I cant just "bring my Playstation 2 or one on out and plug it in" when I want to play those games on the road.
And just as a reference point, PS3 DOES play PS1 games, and PS2 games. This article is about DOWNLOADED ones, so when YOU figure out how to put a PS1 game I downloaded from the Playstation Network on a PS2 or PS1, let me know.
I agree H8RAIN, I didn't spend my money on a PS3 (or any other next-gen console for that matter) to be playing 10 year old games.
I get sick of people moaning over last gen console support. Odds are you already have a perfectly good working PS2 if you prefer the PS2 games.
No support for PSone games?! Who the hell?!
Actually, I'm sure they're are plenty, please spare me the grief.
If you actually read the firmware update information, you'd know that the PS1 games are not updated yet to play on the PS3. I'm not sure where you got this idea that the PSP connects to the PS3 and automatically plays the PS1 game either. When they update the PS1 games, you'll be able to play them on the PS3 and then download them to the PSP and transfer your game saves from one to the other.
I'm hoping that I can already transfer game saves for PS1 games that I own and put on my custom firmware PSP that plays any PS1 game. That way, I can play a game on the road then come home and play it on my TV. Also, I have had no problems with any PS3 firmware update or hardware for that matter.
where do you get the PSone games from?? cant seem to find them on the ps3 store
