Just when you thought you'd seen the end of
MacBook quality problems -- hey,
what more could
go wrong, right? -- here comes another
structural integrity snafu to put a nice bow on things. An unfortunate flickr group has formed around gathering evidence of a rather uniform cracking at the edge of the MacBook's hand rest area, which is apparently putting a crimp in the style of a good collection of MacBook users, including a particularly heavy-palmed user (actually, some people are blaming it on an overly strong magnetic latch) whose MacBook cracked again a mere two weeks after being repaired. No precise word on whether Apple is feeling generous with repairs here, but a few anecdotal reports make it sound like Apple isn't buying claims of it being a problem with build quality. We can understand a bit of skepticism, but given the fact that this isn't the first time
cracking has appeared, we would hope Apple fesses up and fixes these things right quick.
[Thanks, Elvis]

I laugh at people like that. Any system that is Unix based is better than Windows. Heh. Vista is a big failure too.
I work at the computer help desk at my school, and i've seen this issue a number of times. Since the people coming to the desk usually have other issues, it is my understanding that it usually gets fixed.
The same thing happened to me last week and I took it to the apple store in san jose. This is apparently the disadvantage to having magnets that keep the computer closed. They ask me what type of case I had, however told them that I'm anal about my macbook and have never put too much weight on top of it and DO have a nice soft reinforced case for it.
I agree with the comments above that everything inside is amazing, however it is both a waste of my time to get this fixed and apple's money (they have to replace the keyboard, touchpad, and top layer), so they should come up with a solution ASAP!!!!
This just happened to me last night! I've had this macbook since later October/early November. Will this still be covered under the original warranty?!!!!
Many of us who have bought the MacBook have been suffering from cracks in the LCD. Some have happened spontaneously without cause, while others have come about through normal laptop use such as a very minor drop or simply carrying it around in a bag or case. I am trying to get as many people with this problem together so that we all can make a formal complaint together and get apple to resolve this issue. If you have suffered from this problem or know some who has please, please contact me at:

Together we are powerful and alone we pay $1000 dollars in repairs.
My macbook i bought this past december also has cracked, and now i am waiting for the opposite side to crack as well. I believe it has to do with the little "spacers" at the top of the screen hitting the edge of the base when closing. If i look closely at the side that hasn't cracked yet i can see a shiny area where it hits, same distance from the edge as my other crack. Now i do not slam or push my computer closed hard, and i think it is rediculous that when properly using the computer, this issue occurs. Why are these little spacers hard plastic? if i remember right, my ibooks spacers were a rubber type material that didn't supply the same amount of pressure as these on the macbook do. If i send it into be fixed, it will just happen again, won't it? They're not replacing the spacers, are they? Even though i love Mac, i think the macbook design has been thier worst. The edges on the bottom around the typepad are also too sharp on both my wrists. You can say i type wrong, and that's fine, but give me a break, they know people are typing on this thing while traveling and putting into backpacks and briefcases and these issues do not support this kind of use at all.
