While we don't have any clear word on when or if to expect
Averatec's 6700 laptop we just spotted to hit the States, things are a bit more promising with the Averatec 2371, which the company is also announcing today. The ultraportable is a slight bump to the
2300 line we spotted last year, and Averatec's first laptop for the States running Vista. Along with Home Premium, the 2371 runs 1GB of RAM, a 120GB HDD, dual-layer DVD burner, 802.11b/g WiFi, an ExpressCard/54 slot and a 4-in-1 card reader -- not too bad for a 1.3-inch thick, 4 pound, 12.1-incher. The screen runs at 1280 x 800, and there's a 1.6GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-52 processor under the hood. Prices range from $900 to $950.

nice specs... but will it blend?

Why can't Apple make notebooks of this pedigree? *Crosses finger for a 12" MBP*
michael @ May 4th 2007 12:44AM
Simply because they haven't. So why don't you take your Mac comments away from a post that absolutely has nothing to do with macs and throw them somewhere else? Seriously, there are too many ignorant Apple advertisers clumping up the comments on other posts.
Zadillo @ May 4th 2007 12:52AM
Umm, overreact much? As I read it, isknd was actually paying a complement to Averatec for making (or at least rebadging) a laptop like this and wishing that Apple would also make something in this form factor. I hardly see the post as ignorant, and I don't see why you jumped on him.
michael @ May 4th 2007 1:04AM
@Zadillo:
Well, I thought his comment was unnecessary to place on this post. We may all wish for things to happen, but it's not necessary to throw a wishlist for a company on a post about a new laptop from this company. It just looks like trolling, and is really useless, and ruins the commenting experience here on Engadget.

i will never buy an averatec again... i have 4270 laptop from averatec... full of problems... it wouldnt turn on on (third month or so)... the case cracked... the screen has something which darkens it on small spots... really a bad brand...
jimmyb @ May 4th 2007 4:10AM
have owned 3 averatecs and loved them all, no problems at all... just dont rely on Averatec customer service, if you have the confidence to fix your own laptop and create your own bootable restoration media Averatecs can be a decent laptop, i owned 2 x 2155 and currently own a 2370 (with only 100Gb HDD, the TL50 and struggling with Moduslink to get the *free* upgrade to Vista Home Premium... i have put 2Gb of Ram in here though!

Yeah, and Eris help ya if you need to try and find parts for these little buggers.
They're nothing but a throw-away notebook. Cheap, and not horribly bad, but throw-away nonetheless.
They don't sell any parts, so they pretty much force you to send them in to them to get repaired at a much higher cost than you'd be able to find in a local service shop.
I recommend to my customers that they stay away from them.
jimmyb @ May 4th 2007 11:15AM
however, due to the horrible service from Averatec corporate there is a user forum located at www.averatecforums.com that is amazing, there is always people there selling parts and some very very savvy people willing to give advice and help with any problems that arise with Averatecs.
I think the amazing forums is a direct result of the official support sucking ass...
