Asus G1S and G2S gaming notebooks with Santa Rosa
The Santa Rosa bonanza continues with the "leak" of information on two new Asus laptops. The Asus G1S and G2S are updates on the G1 and G2, and will come with Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo processors up to 2.2GHz. Both models get bumps in screen resolution, with the 15.4-inch widescreen G1S moving to the G2's 1680x1080 resolution, and the 17-inch G2S going for 1920x1200. Powering those multiple megapixel displays is an Nvidia GeForce 8600M with 256MB of video RAM, which gives these models the DirectX 10 compatibility which all the kids seem to want these days. Rounding out the specs is all the usual high-end laptop gear -- 2GB RAM, 160GB and 200GB HDDs, DVD burners, Gigabit Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth -- which is just what you'd expect with the €1700 and €1900 ($2300 and $2560) pricetags. The source says that these numbers will hit on May 21, and judging by the Euro pricing information, we'd guess that they'll remain Europe only for now.

That is exactly what I want in a 15.4 inch laptop. Not quite what I want in the price though.
Nvidia GeForce 8600M with 256MB of video RAM
Thats the best you can hope for in the 15.4" variety. Woot.
2GB RAM, 160GB and 200GB HDDs, DVD burners, Gigabit Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth
All the nice essentials that come in all high end laptops, or if you customize them.
Looks like a good laptop, but I'm not going to get one unless they come down about $500
Sorry for the noob question, but will a laptop with specs like these run Elder Scroll 4 smoothly?
micklol, it will play any current game set to maximum. I play Battlefield 2142 screwed up to max on an Asus laptop with an Ati X1600 which is considerable slower than this.
How does the GeForce 8600M compare to the Geforce 7950 512 MB in the XPS M1710? I mean, despite one being DX 10 and the other an older DX 9 part with PS 3.0.
I want to see some side-by side benchmarks of these things.
Compal pwns asus. soon IFT00 will be released, that's barebon 14.1 screen with 8600M, supports T7700, up to 4gB ram.
so you can get: ipm965, T7700, 4gB ram, 8600M, 200gB HDD ONLY for ~$1500 suckt it asus :P
Nerdtalker, from what I've read, the GeForce 8600M is estimated to be on par with the GeForce 7900GS performance wise, so in that case, the 7950 in an XPSM1710 would still perform better (although actual DX10 games might be a different case). Note that the GeForce 8600M is more meant for 14 and 15" notebooks............ so getting 7900GS performance levels is a pretty good feat in and of itself (the 7900GS was only available in 17" notebooks).
Yeah! Gaming with a touchpad!
Most everyone who uses a gaming laptop uses an external mouse of one form or other when actually gaming with it. The main draw of a gaming laptop is primarily its portability; but usually for actual gaming you need to be somewhere where you can plug-in, and in those scenarios it's usually not difficult to use a mouse as well.
The G1 had a 1680x1050 res to begin with, unless the US version is different to the model in New Zealand
I believe it is..... if I recall correctly, the G1 available elsewhere in the world commonly had a 1440x900 screen, while the G1 in the US at least already had a 1680x1050 screen.
I hope these laptops aren't going to be as notoriously hard to find in shops as the G1 and G2. =(
can anyone confirm that the G1S has a pci express card and e-sata?
After the Asus F3SV turned out to have no Intel TurboMemory integrated (which makes Santa Rosa useless - despite the 800Mhz FSÜ) I wonder if these gaming machines will have it?!
Sorry to ask silly questions. I wanted to buy G1 or G2 or G1s or G2s. Anyone can give me a suggestion which 1 is better?
The graphics's its a bit confusing for me. Doest that make any different between 512MB ( Direct 9X ) and 256MB ( Direct 10x)?
correct me if im wrong...
thanks
Intel Santa Rosa sucks! Best to avoid.
-No external pci express 16x
-Turbo memory(Robson) cause the laptop to run slower than current laptops.
-You will be paying for a decrease in performance

Like Dz though I'm not sure if I value the Dx 10 card over the 512mb memory of the first G1, though I'm sure the G1S card is faster, especially in light of its combo with Santa Rosa, but is it enough to be worth the extra cost?
To address a couple of the issues above...
The Turbo Memory issue is a known issue for manufacturers. Asus actually took some flak for NOT including it in the G1S architecture for the exact reason the article states, a failure to properly optimise it in the BIOS causes a performance DECREASE. This is not a problem on upcoming systems, but currently many teams are having trouble with the feature.
The 8600M will be likely indistinguishable from the 7700 for some time, until DX10 games come out. When they do the 8600 will be have a clear upper hand. The 256MB limit is for cost reasons (the actual advertised cost from websites selling these is around 1999) and is only an issue if you plan on high intensity gaming at the highest system resolution. If you plan on doing that then you should just use your money to buy a desktop.
Also, more than one retailer have listed the lappy as having eSATA (x1), I am inclined to believe them.
Regarding the price, 1999 is for the G1S version, the G2S is around 2100.
Does anyone have any estimate or idea as to when they will release this available for me in the U.S.
I am dying for this laptop just reading it's specs.
It is supposed to be released in the next 10 days...
I just bought the G1 model in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 2 days ago. So far I'm liking it. The screen is beautiful and everything is solid build - and looks classy/cool! Performance is awesome too!! Two thumbs waaay up!!!
As for the price, I got it for RM6988 (USD2050).
Just bought a G2S from excaliberpc for college next year ... am looking forward to this, even though it's not the biggest, baddest laptop out there it would be dependable, and esp useful once dx10 games start rolling out
@ GreyKnight.
I plan on buying this laptop for college as well. :D
I would just like to point out that the G2 didn't have 1680x1050 but 1440x900 and that the G1 came in two versions: one with 1280x800 and one with 1680x1050. Therefore I'm afraid that I don't trust the rest of the information given in this article. I'm going to keep an eye on these laptops though :)
