HP's HDX Pavilion 20-inch gaming notebook from more angles
Remember that 20-inch HP HDX Pavilion laptop from yesterday? Well, more shots of the massive gaming laptop have turned up from different angles to give us a better idea of how this top-end laptop looks. This new angle puts the HDX closer in style to the traditional laptop form factor than its main "inspiration," the Dell XPS M2010. Still, the sheer size of the screen coupled with the remote means that this is a laptop with one helluva identity crisis: is it best to think of it as a portable home entertainment system, or a maxed out machine for those with very wide laps? A capable gaming machine it may be, but we have a feeling this won't be the only area where it draws interest. Hopefully, as the unveiling of Santa Rosa nears, HP will grace us with an official press release and we'll be able to get a better idea of the HDX's currently unconfirmed specs.

michael @ May 7th 2007 12:24AM
I looked up the link that Bob put in (which has tons of neat wallpapers, esp. HP ones) and I found the one you were looking for. It's this one: http://mininova.wordpress.com/2007/04/25/hp-awave-wallpaper/
It's called the HP Awave wallpaper. I think it looks cool too. Thanks bob for the link. The Awave wallpaper was actually the last one on the site. I guess I saved you tons of time for this one. Anybody else wants it, the links right here.

Ditto on the HP keyboard meltdown issue. Mine did shortly after I bought it, I googled the problem and came across tons of people with the same issue. Best part is that it's irreparable, and tech support couldnt do much but suggest restoring it to earlier date. This was only a temp. fix. Would love to hear how the 20" works out, as the 17 is plenty wide for me...
ps - cool website - I'm signing my boyfriend up.

This thing looks like a damn nice desktop replacement to me. I would love to have one.

is that touchpad dimpled...that is a terrible idea...use it for about 30 minutes and all of a sudden your finger starts to bleed from the sandpaper like action.
mt77 @ May 9th 2007 1:19AM
Same dimpled design on the tx1000 HP tablet and it works fine. Quite like it actually. Just gives it a bit of texture, same resistance as normal touchpads though.

make a 15.4" version and I'm all over that.
any what is up with HP and putting squiggles on laptops?

I've been waiting for a laptop like this for sooooo long!
but I just brought a new one about half year ago...
so looks like I've to wait then :(...

why does it have to have that stupid monitor set up like that (now at a 90 degree angle with the rear)? and do they really need that remote on the top? i had a dv1000 and it came with a cool little remote in the express card slot, the way they got it there would just waste space when not in use.
PS i love that its a 20 incher rock on! (gotta suck battery life not to mention explode a little lol)
Dixonij @ May 7th 2007 1:34AM
I'm sorry but that touchpad placement directly under the WASD keys is going to be EXTREMELY awkward for any gaming that people might do. At least they could have offset the touchpad so it wouldn't interfere with the approximate area most place their hands while using a laptop.
andrew harrison @ May 7th 2007 6:03AM
do people actually use the trackpad for gaming? [i'm not being facetious, I'm not a gamer and have no idea, but I can't imagine it's very comfortable]
what's the advantage of the dimpled trackpad? I've never seen it before, and can't really fathom what advantage there would be, except that if you get a drop of water on there, it would stay in the dimple for a lot longer than a regular trackpad.
hoeun kim @ May 7th 2007 5:22AM
personally out of lan parties, i do not see a point in desktop replacement lappys. the purpose of laptop is portability. ill keep my 12 inch thank you.
Dixonij @ May 7th 2007 11:31AM
Its not so much the fact the trackpad is dimpled, but that the trackpad is in an indent in the wrist rest area.

and what will be the diference between this so called Laptaop and an 20" iMac (except 3 times the price)?
mrmckeb @ May 7th 2007 6:52AM
@ Filip Serban
Pros:
- Protable,
- It's not a Mac,
- Runs Windows,
- Isn't white,
- Has an actual design,
Cons:
- You can't have it.
Filip Serban @ May 7th 2007 7:02AM
- "Portable" - better spell "transportable"
- "It's not a mac" - This is valid only if you have something against macs
- "Runs Windows" - iMac runs Widows too
- I preffer green so, it's a matter of taste
- "Has an actual design" - It's a matter of taste too.
The question is why pay 3-4 times the price of an iMac?
Bazza @ May 7th 2007 7:05AM
Seconded
mrmckeb @ May 7th 2007 7:12AM
"Runs Windows" - iMac 'CAN' runs Widows too...
And yes, it's a matter of opinion. But then your hypothetical question is also rather opinionated.
When it comes down to it, this machine will be great for the business user that needs the power/screen-size of a desk based pc, but wants the option of taking the pc out to show clients their work.
Ken @ May 7th 2007 10:03AM
Mac's don't have the graphics horse power. Therefore you can't place them in contest with a gaming laptop. Arguement resolved.
aznofazns @ May 7th 2007 9:15PM
the idea of a 12+ pound laptop is still iffy to me. what's the point of it being a laptop if it's barely portable when u can pay almost 50% less for a similarly equipped desktop? I guess it would be difficult to cram an 8800-series graphics card in anything smaller, but still... get a desktop. 17-inch laptops, on the other hand, have my full approval. I have an HP dv8000t and it runs great.
